Same question as last thread.

Found unusual fit for not very usable bit.
Do I give my Crisis suit Commander a dress?
On the one hand, it synergizes weirdly well with the space, but on the other it feels kinda lewd in a weird way.

She's going to be painted up in trad Ochre colours, except using green instead of white for markings if that helps.
>>
I hate waiting for putty to dry AAAHHHHH. I want to work on this model more.
>>
>>97767985
Go for it, suits the pose. But why is the suit so fat in the front? It looks unusually protruding.
>>
>>97765671
Added another layer of color and pastelified them a bit more + added some deep shading near where the branches meet the leaves. Also applied some ODG wash to add a nice weathered, aged moss look to the wooden body. Obviously need to put on another layer of wooden brown at the legs. I have learned that the "pre-primed paint-ready" minis in the Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures line can definitely use a nice pass of primer regardless.

Condolences to the Anon that fucked up his hand in the collage. (and thankz 2 collage-Anon desu)
>>
>>9776985
The way the cloth is draped makes it looks like a cape flowing slightly with gravity down the back of something. With it positioned in the front, it looks like it is defying physics to protrude forward, like it was being braced from behind by wire. I think it would much better if you slapped it on the rear instead.
>>
>>97768137
I wanted to try kitbash Iridium armour, which is meant to be heavier. She looks less fat from other angles.
It's meant to be a classical Crisis suit, normally used to interpret swathes of data and command sensibly from the rear as support, and retrofitted over the years for additional interior space, and armour to occasionally act as a ram and distractifex, for when her mostly infantry Cadre need heavier support.

Also her name literally translates to "Commander Superheavy Defiance".

I've been experimenting with reds to get a really vibrant tone since I really like strong reds

Basically I build from dark reds (I usually basecoat with AK reddish black) to the brightest ones, in this case VMC vermilion, plus a few highlights of the GW red-oranges like wild rider red or even brighter. The secret is applying a glaze of baal red after that, it takes away most of the dull orangey tones and leaves you with a highly saturated red

That's what I was thinking too. It's my personal choice between the two, though I'd have to repaint my doomscythe for it.
>That said the body and metallics kinda blend together
Should I consider a particularly dark gunmetal or bronze instead of what I've currently got?
>>
>>97769567
The difference is generally negligible, but
Armor before trim is slightly faster unless you're just doing a speed/contrast paint over a metallic undercoat that is the same color as the trim.

you can't just use the color picker from a photo to get the right color since you will get a completely different result from a photo of the same model with different lighting, or even the same photo but a part of the same color where the light is reflecting with a different angle.

Internet boards died way before discord. The rainbow brigade, and the insistent bitching made every single forum I used to frequent get shut down.
Reddit exists and you think discord, which is communities (if you like them or not, that's a you thing). The internet being accessed by children and poor people more frequently is what made everything terrible. You can live in a mud hut and still get your hands on a wifi ready phone.
It wasn't discord that ruined internet culture. It was the same people that have ruined every culture. You can fill in those blanks on your own.

Here's a few models that I've had sitting in undiluted LA's totally awesome for almost a year, just to see if it would affect the plastic or not. I know from experience that food grade plastic containers will eventually get soft and leak (all over the floor) but wasn't sure about model plastic. Apart from the test marines who's arms fell off as usual, these guys stayed together. Anything that was connected with plastic glue is fine, super glue got dissolved. The plastic itself is still as robust as before, no obvious signs of weakening or brittleness.

I think the saturation is really good despite the matte varnish which usually kills vibrancy

Almost finished with my first Imperial Fist Intercessor, just need to base it, and was suggested to check in here.

Originally, I wanted to simply use the Vallejo Industrial Mud texture paint, but it dries to a lot beiger tone than I thought it would. I tried covering it in just a bunch of Strong Tone from Army Painter, just to give it that dirty mud look, but I'm not quite satisfied with that result either.

A friend very much into this suggested two things: just paint it dark brown and be done with it, and/or check in here for feedback/suggestions

Sponge or a washcloth at minimum and two water cups with ribbed rubber at the bottom. One cup gets the paint off, the second is the clean any bad water and then into the sponge. If I’m done with the brush I did it in mustache oil and hang it upside down on my the water cup rig. The rig was a Christmas gift from my wife and I can’t recommend the sponge and two cup method enough

I am going to be trying out some individual color washes for each of the different multi-colored puffs to try and brighten them up further. Just put in another wash of darkened brown-ODG on the bark to add more depth, plus started on his white facepaint. Will be painting some red on his nose and expanding on the eyes a bit more.

There's Heroforge, which is made to be easy to use and pretty flexible. If you want to get really intense and use blender, there is that too. I've seen some people use AI to go from 2D to 3D and then clean it up in blender, but I'd say you'd probably get a better result with Heroforge. There are probably others, too but that's the one I've tried.

Similar to making cables/hoses or tentacles. Take some green stuff and roll it out into snakes, set aside for about 15 - 20 minutes to firm up a little. >aperture size - lower lets more light in, brighter picture, decreases depth of field (the area that can be in focus at the same time). Higher shrinks aperture, lets less light in, darker picture, more of the image will be in focus. Set this first to the lowest value where the whole model is still in focus at the distance you're taking the pic from. This setting is the only one that changes how the photo actually looks other than just exposure so get it right as the starting point.
>shutter speed - faster is less light and less blur, slower is more light more blur. If you have a tripod and timer setting, use that, you can go as low as you want pretty much since we take pics of things that don't move. If you were taking a picture of a flying bird this is a lot more important than it is for us. If you are taking handheld pics, use a timer and set it as fast as you can without getting any blur in the pic. Probably like 1/160 for handheld but it depends on your zoom level. You want the picture not-blurry, but no benefit in faster shutter past that point, unless it's your only option for making it darker if you needed to
>ISO - higher sensitivity to light but also amplifies noise, so you want it as low as possible. Your other 2 settings are already locked in by the above, so set the ISO to the lowest value that gets you the exposure you want in the picture. You don't need to only ever do ISO 100, you just want it as low as it can be without being too dark.
>>
>>97777913
nta, but for a given iso isn't the exposure slider just changing aperture o shutter speed under the hood?
>>
>>97777953
It can change anything depending on if you're in aperture/shutter priority or auto. If you're that off, I would just avoid using the exposure compensation. It might help if you're using auto and it's way too dark because maybe there's a bright spot of your light reflecting on part of the background that is cropped out, or something like that.
It might be helpful for something like if you have a black background, auto might blow out the model trying to get the image to average as middle grey if it's the only non-black thing in the picture.
In a controlled setting I don't really know why you would want to use the exposure compensation, it's more for like if the lighting isn't consistent and you just need to bump something up or down a little. It's not for completely changing the settings of the camera. Get the settings mostly right and then if you need to fine tune exposure comp. can help.
>>
>>97778003
>In a controlled setting I don't really know why you would want to use the exposure compensation
in most phone cameras is the default if not the only slider you have access to other than iso

for example with the app i use i can make it show aperture and shutter speed, aperture is either f1.8 or f2.4 nothing else, so if set a given shutter speed and iso, when i go to take the photo i can still move the exposure slider but it doesn't visibly change the shutter speed, but i guess it's what it's actually doing, since noise doesn't seem to vary

They're showing their age generally, but many were bad sculpts even at the time. Then the finecast re-releases were worse and the plastics lacked definition and detail. I have that aragorn and yeah, it always sucked and was oddly twinky compared to the many other versions of him.

I need to get good at basing my minis. I don't have any basing materials and I don't want to buy snake oil. What are folks' must-haves, and what do you get from outside?
>>
>>97778853
corkboard is great as big rock platforms and it’s cheap, I also use texture pastes to make it not so obviously cork.
>>
>>97778853
>cork
>fine sand
>medium size sand
>fake grass
>pebbles
>white glue
>texture paste
>sprue bits (can cut into rough bricks)

the sky is the limit
>>
>>97778853
My minimum basing set would be some medium sand, pebbles/gravel, and any generic texture paste. You'd be painting over it completely so the colors don't matter.
Extras would be some cork sheets, and tufts that match what I'm going for (though I also paint tufts generally).
>>
>>97778853
>>97778869
>>97778899
>>97778900
Another good option in addition to all this is XPS foam; you can source large sheets of it and shape pretty decent looking stuff with only a utility blade once you get the hang of working with it (took me roughly 30~ minutes of trial and error to start getting results I was happy with). Another one I've heard of people using are wood chips, like what you might get out of mulch bags or similar but you'd have to be particular about what variety you're using because the wood grain might give away the scale difference next to the minis.
>>
>>97778853
The only thing I consider to be a true "must-have" is at least one texture paste. I like Vallejo's texture paste tubs, and I most often use their mud, snow, and water textures (the mud has little sticks in it!). Colour doesn't actually matter for texture pastes, since you can just apply them before you prime, and prime over top of them. Snow texture works equally well as sand or stone.
You can buy bark nuggets or mulch by the bag. It's also extremely cheap for how much you get.
More often than not, you don't want to just pick shit off the ground. You will have to bake anything you find outside to kill any bugs/bacteria on the pieces so they don't rot while on your model, and the price of running the oven is likely going to by nearly as expensive as just buying some cheap bark nuggets or something.
Also look into sawdust, sand, gravel, small stones, flock (static grass or turf), etc.

>>97778853
wall filler, tea leaves, oregano and stones from outside.

>>97778986
Anyway, I would also recommend to get some texture pastes (AK ones are usually pretty good, but Vallejo also made some excellent pastes), and maybe some 3D printed plants. GSW makes alright ones, but you can also get .stl files to print your own.

Trovarion, Erik Swinson, Suggs's (Rogue Hobbies) dedicated painting content is good but her channel has a lot of algorithm slop (no offense if you're reading this. Luv you), Nuka Kitten is kind of a meme but she also is pretty good at painting and her tutorials are better than one would expect.

There is good stuff on a bunch of other channels, but they're a lot more "This *random trending bullshit* will turn the hobby on it's head!". So there are still good things, but a lot of content to sift through for actually good stuff.

Oh, and Vince Venturela of course. Tons of stuff to sift through, and some slop, but if you have a specific thing you're trying to find chances are there is a video of Vince doing it.

metal af minis is really good imo for actual high end painting content and commentary, his feedback videos give a lot of good info you can apply to your own stuff

What about Duncan, Jose Davinci or Angel Giraldez?
>>
>>97779989
The most annoying thing he ever did was withdraw his titan from competiton at golden demon despite being a finalist. I don't know what reason he could have possibly had but the idea of spending 150+ hours on a model and then not being able to bear hanging around in a hotel room for an extra 12 hours to possibly win a trophy pisses me off to an extreme degree. Maybe that level of not giving a shit is actually a superpower and I should respect him for it, that's probably why he has dozens of painted armies and I barely have half of one. Of course I have a real job and he gets to paint minis as a job, but still.
>>
>>97780002
Felt a bit like that too, but I do like his setup and the way he paints. Anything youtube is not great though
>>
>>97779944
I enjoy EoB videos, but they're not good tutorials.
Jay is a pretty solid painter, and his consistency and speed are remarkable considering the results he's able to achieve. I also think it's worth appreciating how the majority of his models are fully kitbashed and painted within a single video, even larger vehicles and monsters (only exception I can think of were his titans). It drives me up the wall when other content creators stretch out a simple project into 2 or more videos, it just feels like a waste of time.
He does look like he needs a shower and a haircut though.
>>
>>97780059
Is that what happened? iirc he got a pin and the judges were like
>you used stencils on the flames, take your pin and get the fuck out.
>>
>>97780059
iirc he got a commended for that one (second cut).
I don't think he was going to win anything else with that model tbdesu. It's impressive how far it got, but it wasn't going to get a podium. He made the right choice by pulling out early and not wasting his own time.

>>
>>97780098
>>97780102
Just double checked, it was a commended, which was the final cut before the podium placements. Don't know if it was 2nd or 3rd cut, but that's down to whether it was before or after the notable entry pins were introduced in that same year (it's still the final cut either way).
This was before they reshuffled the awards to make the names make sense.
>>
>>97780102
If it was only commended and not finalist then maybe I've been holding onto this anger for no reason... Time for me to let go.
>>97780098
Lol I watched it a while ago when I was more of a paintlet than I currently am so maybe I just couldn't tell the difference between a contender and a normal entry. I always hold onto the hope that my entry will win a contest even when there's better painters than me, so maybe it's just my attitude.
>>
>>97780139
Your resentment is not misplaced, actually. Commended was the final cut in 2024, his model was technically in the running for a podium placement (though he wasn't going to win one imo). The "finalist" cut was only actually the semi final cut in that year.
They change it in 2025 so that the finalists were actually the finalists again, and commended is now the semi final cut.

That was post-post irony anon, learning about regular painting and art in general is actually very helpful. Starting with mini painting is much like starting by drawing anime, it results in a lack a foundation.

I've found that 2d skin/face rendering tutorials have helped my face painting way more than all the dedicated mini painting tutorials that I've seen.
Obviously still hit or miss, but 2d artists tend to actually be... y'know, artists, and therefore often know what they're actually talking about. In mini painting of course there are still good artists, but the sculpts are still doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

I want to get into oil washing. I've seen loads of vids with Villainy Inks, which are enamels. Am I right in thinking that diluting oil paints with thinners and then using them in the same way as those overpriced enamels is fine?
>>
>>97781717
Sure. Just be warned that oils take literally weeks to cure and will be easily disturbed even without solvents until cured.
>>
>>97781744
Thanks and checked. So the boon of using enamels is the relatively quick cure time compared to oil?
>>
>>97781744
For most oil paints on scale model application (that is with very little paint involved), it would be better to say it takes days, rather than weeks (which is usually true for actual canvas painting; these can take even months). If you drain the oil paints prior, it usually takes days to get to a point when solvents will hardly do anything to them without some rough scrubbing.

>>97781758
Nta, but enamels generally tend to cure/dry a bit faster, yes. Otherwise, it's mostly about the comfort, them being pre-thinned and pre-mixed. It's good if you want to have 100% consistent colors. Then again, you can mix your own oil washes (and such) and bottle them, they last forever.
>>
>>97781825
>Mix your own and bottle them
So much this, just made 4 ounces of black wash with water, black acrylic and a tiny bit of jet-dry rinse aid.
>>
>>97781744
>oils take literally weeks to cure
If you do a little prep work you get that down to about 3 - 5 days. Put the oil paint on a piece of corrugated cardboard for a half hour or so before you mix your wash, the cardboard will soak up some of the excess linseed oil in the paint so it dries faster. You also apply the paint in very thin layers on a model, much less than you would on a canvas where it can take a month or more to completely cure.
>>

painting a flat canvas is a completely different mindset compared to painting a 3d object
>>
>>97782107
True. It takes a lot more skill than 3d painting does.
>>
>>97782119
it doesn't matter how skilled you are at lacrosse when you're standing on a tennis court with a tennis racket in your hand
>>
>>97782107
No, painting minis taught me how to paint canvas.
But other anon is right about 2D being harder, minis show you where highlights and shadows belong like it were paint-by-numbers.
>>
>>97782141
Nah, it's more like being skilled at tennis still makes you good at tennis without movement. You just took away one facet of tennis, but the rest still applies.
Besides, the moment you start shading and highlighting your model, you're already applying 2D painting techniques instead of letting the 3D object do that part for you.
>>
>>97782187
>the moment you start shading and highlighting your model, you're already applying 2D painting techniques
yes which is because everyone here is working on 3d while being stuck in the 2d mindset. everyone is so certain that what they know about 2d must also apply to 3d that saying that it's not true is considered trolling. go ahead and call this bait. stay on clown world. I know I'm right.

Also, I'm still not sure what exactly I should use to highlight red so it won't turn to orange. Darker red here was highlighted by adding sunny skintone but it moved it towards pink. Brighter red turned completely orange after adding some AK "cadmium red".

think about it this way: if you were painting a life size suit of space marine armor, like for a movie costume, how would you approach it? would you still paint shades and highlights on it like you would your miniature? I wouldn't, because real life things don't have shades and highlights painted on them. I would paint the armor like I would paint a car, or a gun, or any other real life object that has factory paint on it. now imagine that instead of being life size it's only an inch and a half tall. what changes? I may have to use different tools and techniques, but the mindset stays the same because unlike what the pseudoscientists itt believe, there's nothing fundamentally different from a big object and a small one, just like there's nothing fundamentally different from painting a postage stamp or a giant mural.

Quick question gentlemen.
I do a volcanic base style for my chorfs (picrel) but to do so I have to paint the bases separately. For the hobgrot vandalz, I've already glued the models to the bases out of stupidity. My question is: can I get away with my hobgrots not having any lava on their bases. Or will it stick out too much?
>>
>>97782819
just tell anyone that asks that they're standing on the cool part of the lava
>>
>>97782795
They're your dudes, you do whatever you want with them. I do the same for some of my minis, I clipped some of the cables off of an ork nob's powerklaw and some fiddly gubbins from other models. Painting is supposed to be fun, if something is annoying you feel free to change it. You are the god of your world.
>>
>>97782819
would look bad for the whole unit to be lacking orange, but I actually think you could benefit from not having every model in your army have visible lava streaks on the particular area they're "standing, just ass a little bit of glow here and there from "off screeN' lava to help a little witht he color balance.

Yep. Having to work a brush or strip paint around that cable and bulb is always the most annoying part of that model for me. I'll keep the snipped cables for some basing scheme, somewhere. They could be made into some industrial wires or tubing.

Protip on this; anything you've gathered from outside you should heat treat in your oven first, not just to dehydrate it but also to kill anything living left behind. Actual dirt can harbor bacterium that will interact with your paints/sculpts, unseen critters can hitch a ride in when they were living underneath the bark on a stick, etc. Just make sure that if you're treating anything flammable like wood that you set it at the right temperature; common opinion states that 65 Celsius is sufficient but feel free to google for more on that especially if you're baking particularly hazardous woods (stuff that has a lower ignition temperature or other factors).

Just toss it in the freezer for a night, easier.
>>
>>97784111
Freezer then introduces issues of moisture. It's easier, sure, but if you're dealing with wood in particular you're better off baking it to evaporate as much moisture out of it as possible; your stuff will last longer and have less likelihood of bad shit happening to it months down the line.

>>
>>97784274
USDA states that 60C internal temp for one minute will kill most anything, international trade standards for wood states 56C internal for 30 minutes is sufficient. Most wood varieties won't ignite below 200C but you should be checking the specific variety you're using since some might have lower ignition temperatures. I throw mine in at 90C for an hour and it's sorted. Quicker than a freezer, sterilisation guaranteed and I can immediately use it, if I want to. You're looking for an alternate solution that's just going to be slower and worse at achieving what you're aiming for.

>>
>>97784312
>>97784320
You can walk away from the oven. There's nothing inherently dangerous about throwing wood into the oven on a tray at low temperatures. Do you babysit a six hour slow cooked meal you leave in the oven and check it every 10 minutes? There's zero attention needed; you literally just put it on a high enough temperature to sterilise but not ignite the wood and you're done.
>>
>>97784366
Sure, but I could also not run the oven, which is even easier and saves a little power to boot. I dunno why you're so invested in using the oven.

that argument doesn't hold up because the vast majority of models I see painted here or anywhere else for that matter are shaded with neutral overhead lighting. it doesn't matter if they have a base like they're on an ice planet or in the middle of a grassy field. can you show an example of a marine that was specifically painted to look like it was inside a space hulk or on a necron tomb world? what would that even look like? Nah. I'm using the kit for kitbashing the Land Raider, also one of the oldest GW models. It's 25 years (I think) for Land Raider, and 35 years for the Bradley. So I have them side by side. While I enjoyed putting the Land Raider together, and I think it's a neat, well-engineered kit, the quality difference is just obvious. Mind you, the Bradley kit has some trouble of it's own (the crew figures are comically awful) and the more organic parts (like the baggage) are definitely showing the age, but it's still day and night for the most part.

there are no shortage of ways and in my experience no way is better than any other

I personally really like creating a mixture of
>baking soda
>sand
>flint chips
and applying to the base with superglue. The superglue reacts with the baking soda to create an interesting texture, and the sand and other additives provide variation.

for more arid bases, I like to use texture paint and crackle paints and then paint over

the easiest and cheapest way I've done so far is:
baking soda
PVA glue
cheap acrylic craft paint
a little bit of water

and mix them in a cup. by varying how much water you add it can go from rough to smooth.

and if you want cheap rock like things, you can buy aquarium rocks/gravel by the pound off amazon. i've also used cheap corks and broken them down into small pieces with my fingernails. gives it an uneven shape and you don't even have to paint them to get a real color.

Since you bring up PVA glue; try getting some varied globs, strings and thin sheets of it onto baking paper and then slamfuck it in the microwave for a couple seconds at a time. >>97784993
the craft and floral sections of dollar stores are also good places to look for things like gravel, sand, glass chips, small sea shells, etc
>>
>>97785001
They figuratively literally are. I legitimately don't know of any other supplier for paint that comes in pot style bottles that serve the same niche as Citadel; Tamiya and Revell have their metal pots with pry lids and Testors has screwtop pots but each of those is devoted to an entirely different niche usually. Testors I think is mostly for auto hobbyist miniatures while Revell is similarly marketed; maybe you'd get some mileage out of Tamiya but the few pots I have from them didn't seem very suitable for miniature painting. There's also a slew of craft paint brands but I'm assuming you want hobby paints and not something a five year old would use for a fridge painting.

Seriously though if you hate pots, why not move to other brands of paint that come in other types of container while you're at it? I've been slowly phasing out my Citadel stuff that I inherited in favor of Vallejo and other dropper bottles and I much prefer those overall.
>>
>>97785037
Modern acrylic craft paints are pretty damn good, for your average mini painter they're better than required.
>>
>>97785045
I use them for a few things myself; I'll thin them down with isopropyl and mix with matte mod podge to make a combination sealing layer and primer paint for any XPS foam terrain I do. Can't imagine using them for actual mini painting though; I'm sure it's possible but the big issues would be mixing the very basic colours you get in order to get the exact tones you want. The money you save on them is kinda lost in the time and effort proposition compared to a reliable brand you like having a colour almost exactly how you want it.

Yeah that's pretty good for what it is. I will say that you're probably at a level of painting where you can make it work for you though; I'd have trouble consistently painting those teeth for example. He could use a wash on the armour parts though to bring back some of the detail.

>>
>>97785101
Still perfectly serviceable. I don't know if I'd advocate for people that aren't confident in their painting ability to go whole hog on craft paints though. On the other hand they cost like $2 a tube so it's not like you're bankrupting yourself if you give them a try and you decide you hate working with them.
>>
>>97785094
These would really benefit from adjusting your camera's settings so it's focusing on them. I can tell they're competently done; just the glass cockpits alone make it obvious but the blur is really hampering them.
>>
>>97785109
The pricing is what converted me, it all started years ago when I was painting blonde hair for an elf and realised I was out of yellow, so I grabbed the bottle from my terrain supplies.
Turned out fine, so I wondered how a set of minis in pure craft paint would be, and that turned out fine too, at which point I just went "fuck it, why am I spending way more on much smaller bottles of paint? I'm no prize winning contest painter"

>Seriously though if you hate pots, why not move to other brands of paint that come in other types of container while you're at it?
Because I like pots, I already use Tamiya pots for some stuff and they're great, just no thrills glass pot with a lid that screws off, works perfectly fine, the only issue is that Tamiyas colour range is pretty limited and the paints go tacky too quickly to be really convenient, I was hoping there was a manufactorer that did GW style acrylics in Tamiya style pots
>>
Has anybody tried the Coat d'arms paints? Do they have the same issue where paint gets inside the lid and ruins everything? And can you even buy them in the US or do tariffs/paint shipping regulations make it a non starter?
>>
>>97785147
I'm not aware of any, really. I know of a couple historical examples but none of them are in production anymore.
>>
>>97785158
there is some other brand that is a rebranding/rebottling of coat d'arms right? wasn't that the case with the duncan rhodes paints? or was that the blanche paints?

Mr. Hobby Acrysion paints are water-based acrylics. Make sure the label says Acrysion, though. Their Aqueous line are not the same thing and you won't be able to thin them well with water.
>>
How the fuck do you remove primer from a plastic model? Not paint, primer. I tried soaking it in Simple Green for a night then using a toothbrush, and it did nothing. I tried the same with 91% isopropyl alcohol, and it did nothing.

You don't.
Acrylic brush on or airbrush primer? It's just paint, isopropyl alcohol should work.

Don't get me started on the differences.
>>
>>97785600
Rattle-can spray primer.
>>97785669
Damn, thanks.
>>
>>97785576
give it a few days in 99% IPA and then go at it with a bamboo toothbrush
repeat till 99% of primer is gone
this works with even stubborn primers like army painter

>>97785856
Seconding this, it's expensive but for some oldhammer restorations its been the only thing that removed enamel based actual primer. The other regular chemicals for plastic that aren't nitro based can't get enamel off them without using something that would melt plastic.

So I do a lot of sculpting with milliput, it is my hobby putty of choice over greenstuff, here is my two cents.

Milliput is water soluble. This means if you use water you can dissolve the milliput and turn it into a mud. While water alone *can* help a lot from having your tools stick, especially when applying bulk putty for establishing volumes. But when trying to get a smooth finish on the surface in my experience a silicone sculpting brush will tear up the surface and kinda erode it. The water is not sufficient, and for lack of a better word it is too "watery".

Vaseline is commonly recommended for keeping your tools from sticking and in this regard it works great. But it also seals off the surface of the putty and prevents it from bonding with itself nicely. If you have a crease or a seam, trying to smooth it flat with vaseline can be irritatingly tough; you really want to be able to activate the milliputs water solubility to get it to 'melt' back together. You do not want to use vaseline when first applying the putty for volumes or else it wont stick to anything.

I found a long time ago that saliva is the perfect medium, its slippery while still being able to slurry with the milliput, allowing you to get perfectly smooth surfaces, and it doesnt leave vaseline all over the place. But It makes me uncomfortable licking my tools (even though I always looked to make sure there was no putty on them) and it occurred to me that lube might just work. Turns out it does.

Anyone know a color between GW's Mechanicus Standard Grey and Dawnstone? I tried using the comparative color list in the Mega, and bought London Grey, however, it's lighter than Dawnstone so I'm not trusting it anymore. I trust you guys, doe
