Here's my personal hierarchy of UBs based on how sloppy they are.>1. Children's Cartoons: Literally the lowest of the low, why would you do this.>2. Comic books: Awful because nobody actually buys comics, but saved from being the lowest due to the fact that "some" LGS are also comic book stores>3. Video Games. Don't think I need to elaborate much on this, if you want to play a video game, just go play the damn video game.>4. TV and Movies: Just generally sloppy, we (generally) don't want to see real people on Magic cards.>5. Books: Preferable to the previous 4 by a large margin, taking pre-existing fiction and adapting it to game-form is fine.>6. Other Tabletop Games: This is how it ought to be, you actually will see a crossover audience and it won't be as egregiously offensive as Magic players absorb this from osmosis.

Anon, you wake up tomorrow and an evil genie has tasked you with fixing Magic's IP. (A WotC employee made a wish and this is their punishment.)You must rebuild Magic's original storytelling identity, with one constraint: You must maintain something recognizable as a brand image across all sets. It can be a character, macguffin, anything. The only rule is that you need to include something the marketing team can shit out as an IP identifier in merchandising.Whatever you say, goes (limited to influence over WotC and Hasbro). If you do not give marketing their merchandising fuel, the genie will kill you. The death will be fairly quick but extremely painful. All other consequences of your actions will remain. What do you do?

You could resolve the arc with people accepting that loss of planeswalking as a metaphor for people accepting that Magic isn't the same game anymore and that shit changes, but sometimes those changes look an awful lot like what we had before.

>>97796367Got to admit. As some people suggested, you have Silvers, Eldrazi, hell the phyrexians would be a great regular mascot villian too. However, they other kill them off. Or nerfs them by end of the block/set where they're not much of a threat after. Hell, Nicol Bolas being a endgame boss would been good. Or have groups. However it feels like they can only do one at a time. Rather than have multiple threats who might work together or attack each other. Honestly, make the Silvers be MTG "chimera ants", Bolas the final boss, Eldrazi your Lovecraften horror, and Phyrexian your borg. (Plus, all the local threats of the current plane.) The idea of a cute Pikachu mascot isn't needed. However the idea of a villian mascot as the idea you are a planeswalker and could be work with or against them pushed the "mature" aspect and let be honest. Would drive sales more than a "baby yoda" to sell to tourists. Hell, look at IPs like Star Wars, Walking Dead, Dragon Quest, Mario, etc. Some of their biggest icons are villians even their basic grunts.

The quote was that mythics would not JUST be the most powerful staple cards. That means some mythics would be powerful staples. The original claim was that mythics were designed based on feeling 'epic' more than on powerlevel not that the powerlevel would always be low or that format staples would never be mythic. This was arguably first broken with Lotus Cobra (I'm not counting From The Vault cards) but the attachment/significance that MtG players affix to 'lotus' makes for at least an argument that it was valid.Personally I think the first mythic that unquestionably didn't feel mythic was Misthollow Griffin though I think that Warren Instigator and the Herose of Oxid Ridge/Bladehold shouldn't have been mythic either.>didn't have toa ppeal to people that actually play the gameChronicles on top of very underwhelming set releases straight up crippled the game and the reserved list was probably one of the very few options they had to make sure Magic didn't die in 1997. >>97800163Honestly, if you want to get into Magic I'd tell you to get together with some friends and print proxy decks. I seriously do not recommend you spend any money in this game.
I liked MKM.
>>97801529Idk I felt a lot of Duskmourn's creatures were a bit scattershot in terms of design. And I don't know why red's aesthetic was murder clowns and rollercoaster rides instead of something more in line with the haunted house theme. I do like the room mechanic and I hope it's reiterated in future sets.
>>97801489All of those sets would’ve benefit from having a supplemental set follow it, but no we have to get 8 sets a year with no breathing room
>>97800566I used to absolutely hate their art when I first got into mtg but over time they became two of my favorite artists in the game
>>97801538It's still Ravnica after all.>>97801548Bloomburrow was perfectly fine as a one-and-done deal. And I'm not sure how much MKM and OTJ would benefit from doubling in scope. In DSK's case I can absolutely see it, up front it's clear that a lot more could be done based on the work the team already put in.
>>97801500>>97801538MKM was an utter assassination of Ravnica as a coherent world. It is now inhabited by 1000 detectives because the design team opted for lazy tribal.Ravnica as a setting has always had detectives as a concept, but the volume they appeared in and the visual markers used to denote them (hats) was an abject disaster. If they were desperate to include detective tribal, the best implementation would have been "threshold one", or a Homicidal Seclusion type strategy, given the solitary nature of noir fiction and the volume of detectives on Ravnica (small). What we got was unsatisfying narrative-destroying, setting-destroying, go wide tribal slop.
>>97801538I like MKM in the same way I like SPM. If the set lore was palatable, I'd actually consider running the cards.
>>97801538I liked surveil lands, fetching for one feels like better than drawing a card sometimes, it's crazy
>>97801489I didn't really care for those first two but Bloomburrow was great and while Duskmourn was very hit or miss the hits were really good, I loved the monster design in it and overall I thought it was a very creative set, much more interesting then something like not-Harry Potter and other such shit

>>97801643>>>/tg/edhg
>>97801643I wonder if the idea of the plane being overrun by an army of intrepid detectives was something they had originally thought of as a development for New Capenna. The detective serial theme feels like it would be much closer to the Roaring Twenties tone they developed with that plane.
>>97801673It would have worked a lot better in Capenna and in many other planes too. Doing a murder mystery in Ravnica of all places just felt wrong.
>>97801673I swear I saw something saying that MKM was originally going to be New Capenna, but they panicked once they saw the poor reception of SNC and swapped it to Ravnica. Might've just been speculation though.
>>97801708If you think about it capenna is just a vertical version of ravnica.
>>97801673>>97801708Maro has specifically said they started with "murder mystery" and then placed the plane. They thought about Capenna, but decided it was a poor fit because it doesn't have traditional "law enforcement" and its identity is tied up in crime being de facto legal. Take that with a grain of Maro salt of course.
>>97801643YOUJUSTKNOW
>>97801727>decided it was a poor fit because it doesn't have traditional "law enforcement" and its identity is tied up in crime being de facto legal.I don't understand how that makes it a poor fit. The point of a murder mystery story is figuring out who the murderer is. Whether the people trying to figure that out are law enforcement or not is not the point. It can work just as well within a mafia setting.
>>97801489>>97801529>>97801628Was there ever an in-universe explanation why the survivors dressed like flamboyant retards? But if it's a giant hell-house-world that people are in full survival mode in 24/7 there wouldn't be time for new trendy fashion to develop.

>>97801748I am right there with you man. His excuse stinks, but that's what he said.I wonder if part of the intention was to separate it from Shadows Over Innistrad, which had Jace playing detective as its main storyline, although it was not a murder mystery exactly.
Pitch for DSK 2: make demons artifact creatures. All the ACs being toys was lame as shit. The fundamental premise of the whole plane was that people developed technology by incorporating demons, right up until someone inevitably summoned a demon too big and nasty to cram into a Walkman. But the demon cards in DSK are all just monoblack creatures that look like Slender Man with a bull cranium for a head. There's no techy motif at all in the cards. And all the technological devices used by survivors is just shit like music players and hockey sticks with green Tron lines on them, no demon shit visible. And again, all artifact creatures are stupid shit like plushies with teeth.Give me some techno demons ffs Rosewater you made this layup and completely missed the mark on it, it's embarrassing to watch.

>>97801844And speaking of tiny critters in the set: why the hell are there three different types of cuddly cuteshit? Beasties, glimmers, gremlins. One of them, fair enough. Two? That's a stretch. All three? Fuck off.
>>97801905Fuck gremlins keep Glimmers and Beasties
>>97801844yeah i want FNAF rip off too
>>97801919>keep Glimmers
>>97799583My favorite is Conduit of Worlds as it plays well with my control style.Icetill Explorer is too powerful for me.Walk in Closet is the second best.Glacierwood Siege is a worse Walk-in Closet and the Temur side is commander bait.Perennial Behomoth cost too much manaand its unearth cost is hard to make use of.
>>97799992The Kaladesh team probably had a train until they realized how racist it would be.
>>97801416No it was always supposed to be its own plane the only lore changes that are known is the Atiin were changed a lot because of culture consultants.
>>978017591.Marina was a weirdo who dressed in outdated fashion.2.The survivors used wallpaper as clothing.
>>97802030I hope they learned their lesson about cultural consultants, because not even the wokest content creators liked the Atiin.
>>97802064They won't.The cultural consultants are a sacrificial lamb to protect them from accusations of racism.
>>97802063Seems super gay and contrived. Thank you for answering anon.
>>97802030>hired cultural consultants>still did the myth of the empty west>still had a native population that became people once the colonizers arrivedAmazing
>>97801643MKM was literally not even designed as a Ravnica set. It was moved from SNC after people hated that plane.
>>97802139Citation please
>>97802156I read it here one time so it must be true.
>>97799828No, it's incredibly limited in options and the effects are either too strong or too generic.
>>97799858>I fucking despise how every nonwhite card is basically engine and gas by themselvesfixed it for jew
>>97802134cultural consultants worry so much about fighting stereotypes that they somehow end up reinforcing the very things that they claim to be against
>>97802568m8 stfuphelia and ocelot pride are two of the most op cards in recent memory

You're a Jewish executive at Wizards of the Coast. You're about to fly to your weekend retreat with cocaine and underage hookers. When some underling of yours asks you to make a decision:>Sir, the players have been complaining. They demand less sets and more playtesting. Do we comply or do we leave the slop machines running? It's a very dangerous course! If we keep doing it, the players will continue to buy the slop. BUT they will complain even more online and make youtube videos where they complain and invent weird formats nobody plays. Sir, it's very urgent! What's your decision?
>>97802668I just ask him what IPs are popular with kids these days and tell him to do UB sets of those
