Wtf is going on with the base sizes of Astra Militarum command squads? Apparently this is old news, but I've been looking into playing again after being away for years and a lot has changed. A couple folks from yesterdays thread told me that its now common place to just use whatever datasheet you want for Guard so long as you make it clear what everything is since stuff like infantry aren't generalized anymore. I don't know why GW did this, it doesn't really matter, but how are you supposed to mix and match units when some have different base sizes? It feels like your forced to take either some Cadians (Castellan/Creed) or Lord Solar just to have enough orders to go around, while Krieg seems to have the best rules for almost everything else. Unfortunately, the models I own are neither Cadian nor Krieg, and if I were to keep playing Guard, I'd want everything to count as one or the other.Someone suggested playing an older edition, which apparently is not uncommon these days, but I'm already doing that with WHFB. This army was originally built with the intention of keeping it current. Right now I'm just trying to consolidate what I have into something coherent, which is why I brought up doing some stuff with CSM or GSC in the other thread because as far as I'm aware both can make use of the models. Although, since then I have discovered that many of the renegade and heretic units are gone, so realistically it would probably just be GSC, but I'm concerned about centering an entire army off a single detachment.

For one, the battle line units only fit the skitari portion of the army and not the cult Mechanicus or cult Cybernetica. Which is why they started the Edition with an army rule for only half their army. For another thing, it makes no sense that the buffs are not originating from the tech priests themselves and feels completely ass backwards. The admec identity since their inception has been complex interlocking parts coming together to layer a whole bunch of mechanics into making something effective. But this was not the way to do it. And while that idea is thematic, it is never going to be fun for most people either because of the complexity. You stack six buffs on a trash unit over five minutes and three phases to turn it into the rough equivalent of a Space Marine shooting for one turn, and then the other guy just rolls his dice and does the same thing.
