Magic the Gathering: No UB

I Salute That Red White (Black Green) and Blue Edition

Previously on...
>>97975596

This is a general for a version of Magic the Gathering that excludes 3rd party IPs, these cards are known as "Universes Beyond". This thread is not a duplicate of any other general, it is not a fork of any specific general. There is growing support for versions of Magic formats that exclude UB, for example Planar Standard. This general is the place for those discussions
This general is as legitimate as D&D Old School Renaissance threads and it exists for similar reasons.

Discussion of Magic the Gathering where no set or release that required 3rd party IP licensing can be mentioned. That includes Universes Beyond and Secret Lair.

WARNING: There is a massive sperg from /edhg/ seething over the existence of threads he didn't personally make and it is highly likely that he is going to try to shit up these threads for a while.
Ignore him and one day he will kill himself.

The ONLY Magic sets this year:
>Lorwyn Eclipsed, January 23 2026
>Secrets of Strixhaven, April 24 2026
>Reality Fracture, October 2 2026

Thread Question:
At MagicCon it has been confirmed that Reality Fracture packs are going to contain 2 versions of the same character, but they won't all be planewalkers
Who else gonna be getting colorshifted?
>>
1 commander precon for RF for those who partake

An alternate Multiverse of his own creation threatens to overtake the current one, and just one brave team of heroes stands in the path of oblivion. >Contents:

>10 double-sided token cards

I think the dystopic angle on the Echoverse is a bit trite. I think I'd prefer it if it weren't so obviously evil. It's a fun concept and the sort of thing they could revisit in years to come, but the way sets are designed these days I'm assuming it's going to be one-and-done and the same month they release lore about how Jace made this universe, he will be defeated and it will be destroyed. Maybe a few characters from it will escape
>>
So what are you guys going to do during the next two sets?
>>
>>98014237
Nah, dystopia's necessary so people don't get too attached. You create too many ethical issues if it's a preferable world, while also justifying his deranged actions. Since the alternate universe gets unmade at the end of the narrative, having too much good there ends up being really fucked up.

It’s not a plane. It’s a process that would overwrite the multiverse itself.

>God forbid narratives be morally gray
Anon, answering the question
>What if I made it so that every bad thing for the past ten years never happened?
with
>That would be pretty great, actually.
isn't morally grey, it's morally puerile. Jace's goal is already noble, it's his means and the consequences of his actions that are questionable. And, even with the dystopian elements, there are absolutely people who would sign on with the idea for the sake of averting the Phyrexian Invasion. No, his world absolutely needs to be fundamentally flawed for the moral scales to even be balanced enough to be called grey.

One might suppose the matter could be written with more nuance, with the flaws of Jace's world being less obviously telegraphed. But, leaving aside the question of whether WotC's current roster has the chops to write that kind of nuance, the plain fact is that the audience wouldn't pick up on it. We're talking about a player base with some people who correctly predicted before BFZ was even announced that an Eldrazi would end up imprisoned in Innistrad's moon, with Avacyn dying in the process...and a majority that got all the way through SOI and were then surprised by the reveal in EMN that the spooky thing was Emrakul all along. You have to hit Magic players over the head with a hammer in order for them to understand anything, so trying to present Jace's world as subtly wrong, rather than overtly, would be doomed to failure.

>God forbid [...] a multiverse gets an actual "what if?" plane permanently
We already have two: Tarkir and Lorwyn/Shadowmoor. Adding a new one wouldn't break any new ground, it'd just be "DTK but for the last ten years of Magic's story instead of just the last two sets".
>>
>>98015849

>wooooo Jace was gonna replace the whole multiverse, but then Loot farted out a rainbow egg which hatched a gay dragon that shes a single tear bevause it didn’t want any lives in the multiverse to be erased so now the echoverse is contained as its own plane!!!
Problem solved
>>
>>98017293
>It's fiction, it can be retarded.
I mean, okay, but I at least would prefer if it weren't.
>>
>>98017309
Magic lore isn’t exactly high art. It’s the surviving equivalent of Saturday morning cartoons from the 80s and 90s, a vehicle to sell toys.
The point is that there’s no reason at all that the echoverse CAN’T survive, and it’s more interesting for the game if it does
>>
>>98017328
>it’s more interesting for the game if it does
Not really. It has no impact on the mechanical side of things, since the cards they design and print are going to be subject to the same parameters. And, from a flavor perspective, it’s bland and homogenizing if it coexists with the real multiverse. No decisions matter, since we have a backup multiverse in which the opposite choices were made, and every character has to either get a duplicate or have an explanation as to why they don’t. It doesn’t add anything interesting, but comes with a significant overhead cost and a cheapening of whatever conflicts might exist.
>>
>>98017430
Amazing how you can make something sound bad by just choosing the absolute worst interpretation constantly.

Who says that the Echoverse is a “backup” universe where “the opposite choices” were made? Even WotC hasn’t described it as that, it’s something you just made up right now.

And what preserving it as a plane adds is a neat way to explore color identity semi-regularly. Instead of being Jace’s personal multiverse the plane could be reduced to a sort of Vesuva-esque place where occasionally a character from another plane will spontaneously be mirrored in the echoverse and we can explore what if scenarios with them and their design
>>
>>98017610
>Who says that the Echoverse is a “backup” universe
It isn’t currently, but keeping a second universe around in a permanent fashion would make it into one.

>where “the opposite choices” were made?
So, Liliana being a healer and Chandra having Baral’s job are’t obvious flips? It’s a mirror universe, with reflection as the obvious theme.

>Instead of being Jace’s personal multiverse
That’s literally what it is, though. In its entirety. Now you’re the one making things up whole-cloth. Jace is attempting to overwrite the multiverse with one of his design. This isn’t a separate plane, it’s an event occurring across all of them. Reducing it to the scope of a single plane would mean that single plane was overwritten but others were spared, not that you’d somehow have one plane that contains bits of others sometimes maybe. And it cannot be overstated that this isn’t some kind of natural phenomenon that Jace has harnessed, but the result of deliberate action he has taken on the substrate that underpins the multiverse.

>explore color identity semi-regularly
Literally every faction set does that.

Buddy white already has two 1 mana creature exilers, the versatility of hitting planewaklers is not worth that much.
Erode is being played in LTB, sacrifice, and reanimator decks to land ramp. Destroying is a bigger deal when it hits your own shit, because white has tons of easy ways to recover from grave, pic related being another one that was just reprinted

Bant Nicol Bolas, the real Nicol Bolas will free himself due to Jace’s over confidence. Big things are about to happen in magic.
The other elder dragons will also be colour shifted and will appear in future sets. Wizards didn’t want to make the same mistake they did with DTK.

Don’t ask how I know, screen cap this.
>>
>>98030411
Neither, really. They have some quirks of wording that might make a difference in 0.000001% of cases. Like the boros one can just gain you life instead of anything else. No idea why they made the discard a "may" effect when it was already templated with "if you do" to prevent people being able to use the effect when their hand is empty.

Drawing first is generally better than discarding first because you can discard what you draw if they're worse than what you already had in hand.
But then, discarding 1 over discarding 2 means it's net neutral card advantage (including the fact you lose the card itself when its cast) rather than being net -1
But then again, flashback CMC 3 instead of 4 is a pretty big difference. You'd have to be pretty desperate to flashback the boros one.

It just comes down to what colors you're running. If you care about filling your grave and having flashback, play whichever one is in your colors. I wouldn't recommend running either in decks that don't care about those things

> Having an English printing on hand for questions is ethical though
I agree on that. Like the other anon said, have a printing in the local language at hand for the fancy Japanese one. But saying that one should play only English cards is a retarded argument. And I say that as a Spaniard that plays with mostly English printings out of habit and some Spanish cards trip me up because I don’t know how a particular keyword was translated.
>>
>>98034147
>>98034234
There's also the fact that having a local language copy on hand serves as supporting evidence for the card you played actually being the card you say it is. While it'd be pretty scummy to memorize the list of every instant and sorcery with a given mana cost and then just say it's whichever one is most convenient, that doesn't mean some people wouldn't do it.

Jace realizes Bolas was right all along, the Spark must be restored because time and space are unravelling without it. The other walkers try to stop him but he succeeds in winding back time to fix the rifts during Time Spiral. This results in the Spark retaining its full power, most of the Oldwalkers staying alive, most nuwalkers never being born, and any plane introduced after Lorwyn never having existed (also Kamigawa remains feudal and never goes full anime). Jace fades away with a smile along with his friends and doomed timeline.

A new format banning every card between Lorwyn and this reboot is introduced.

>>
>>98048416
depends on the format. flowstate might be better for 60 altho I don't really believe in it
>>
>>98048675
I think even in Coomander the lute is overcosted. The problem it has is that 4 CMC is a very common mana value for commanders and something people often fail to appreciate is how much better a deck works when you clear out mana values equal to your commander as much as possible. In most metas it's better to just play your commander on curve unless it's literally kill-on-sight.
So if you have a 4CMC commander but also have lute in hand, you have to make the decision of whether you want your commander now, or whether you cast lute now and commander next turn. Realistically if you play lute now and commander next turn you're actually gimping yourself for 2 turns because even with the extra mana from lute you're only giving yourself 2 excess mana at most the turn the commander comes down, which isn't going to be starting many engines. So you're playing lute on curve, commander a turn behind, and then getting your game plan underway a turn after.
The fact the excess mana can only be used on instants and sorceries also massively restricts its usefulness, AND because there's so much artifact ramp over land ramp (especially in izzet and combinations that include izzet) you're going to see a lot of situations where you only get a little benefit from the lute at all

Is it really any better than running a medallion in terms of the amount of mana it saves you? I don't think so. Maybe you run it in izzet X spells, but other than that I see it as $1.50 card at most

I do think having another multiverse on top of the existing multiverse is a bit too much of a can of worms. Honestly I'm not sold on Jace as the new villain either, even odds Bolas somehow hijacks it or something.
>>
>>98048801
It doesn't literally need to be a 2nd multiverse though. As was said above, at the end of the arc it can basically become like a planar Vesuva, call it some residual planar energy or some bullshit and have it so spontaneously this place will spawn locations and characters that are colorshifted versions of things in the multiverse. I literally don't see any reason not to. It would mean any time WotC feels like it they can revisit something the fans enjoyed but with a fresh twist

It doesn't need to be some entire second continuity, and I don't know why a couple people ITT talk about it as if it is. The way sets are written these days because set blocks got scrapped, there isn't fucking time to explore this place as if its a second multiverse. It's going to be the Jacestice League at not-Strixhaven and that's fucking it. So treat it that way. End of the arc, say Jace was defeated, saw the light, blah blah blah blah blah, but the echoverse just couldn't be destroyed once it was created and now it's in a formless state where whenever the writers feel like it they can use it as an excuse to print more cardboard. Easy fucking win

I think even Wizards is aware of how badly the straight-to-modern sets fucked up every format, hence why it's all Standard-legal all the time now

ALL HAIL BLUCIFER.
>>
>>98049813
oh, that's not even an edit
it actually has glowing red eyes
>>

I see what you mean but I guess I just don't play decks that want their commander asap, let alone kill on sight
>>
>>98049395
>turn 4 lute
>turn 5 extra turn
>turn 6 kess and recast extra turn
rince and repeat extra turns that you (always) draw
I have a wheels one but that's kinda slow so maybe just combo?
>>
>>98049351
Considering your pic you already know the answer, but yes, I think the direction they're taking with regards to anything that hints at (female) sexualization is both boring and, ironically, kinda juvenile and retrograde. I don't want or need every woman in Magic to look like a Frazetta character, but them electing to completely shut down anything that remotely hints of sex appeal in favor of this weird sterile prog-fantasy-by-way-of-tumblr aesthetic is disheartening.

Leftoid company, what can you expect?
Wonder how many WotC employees have OnlyFans on the side
>>
>>98050402
I think maybe I need more draw. I’m not bricking but I just don’t always have the right combination of cards.
Maybe I should just bite the bullet and put in Gifts Ungiven and ways to tutor it so I can combo ASAP

MH3 was only two years ago, with MH2 having been three years before that. I wouldn't assume they've stopped milking until we've seen the schedule for 2027.
>>
>>98053421
They've were doing a yearly straight to Modern product for like a decade up until MH3, right? The "innovation" sets. And those stopped since they moved to six+ Standard sets a year
>>
>>98053309
myeah, kess is just there to back me up if I brick since I can double dip any spell
>>
>>98053916
oh shit I didn't even realise that. can't wait for standard to become modern powerlevel!
>>
>>98055436
I mean Vivi Cauldron was barely altered from Standard to Modern so we're pretty much there
>>
>>98048416
It is playable in standard. It's still a mana doubler for 4 in Izzet (lol) and mana doublers at 4 have always been playable

Is it playable though?

Did you win last night, anon?
>>
>>98057899
yes, was super behind so the green player left me alone while killing the competition and I then top decked a threaten effect to swing their huge trampler at 'em
>>
>>98057899
no, wanted to give the win to the new kid learning the game but the local tryhard convinced the kid to throw it so he could win the promo pack instead
there was a bristly bill inside

>>98058494
>win the promo pack
Absolutely insane way to play the game

What the actual fuck are you talking about?

Eldraine's high fae are so aesthetic. I haven't a clue what's up with their heads being baskets holding light but I'm down for it.

Faeries always seem to get kino designs. Eldraine Fae are cool but my heart belongs to Lorwyn/Shadowmoor's insectoid Faeries

My biggest regret for nuLorwyn is that I never got to play Faeries in limited

Magic should really find a better way to show off key art for the set. I have seen this card so many times but never realized his feet were all fucked up and his hair was a birds nest.

I propose the backside of some number of tokens, or pack extras etc becomes a collectible story card, nonplayable, but feature4s a zoomed in art (like the art series from MH sets) but adds flavor text that can pertain to the art, the story, etc. So much work the creative team puts in get lost and never communicated to the players. A couple of blurbs in pack would do more for the universe than a novel ever could.

>ching chong ping pong
>>
>>98060865
The art just needs to be drawn better. So many artists now don't seem to keep in mind their art will be on a tiny card
>>
>>98042333
no idea why it was low in the first place. just like nu-gitrog. cards are nuts
been real easy trading up past years to get cards for cheap
>>
>>98062034
>Yeah lemme just pay (4) before playing the card I actually wanted
Valley Floodcaller is right there with huge upside.
>>
>>98062145
yes, that too. has won me a game once or twice. no idea why it's still cheaper
>>
>>98062209
Because Flash as an effect has become largely devalued over time and the reason it stays shit is mostly because WotC doesn't ever want draw-go to come back (since people bitch incessantly whenever control is meta). See: Leyline of Anticipation sucking despite being literally 0 mana.
That being said I also have no clue why Valley Floodcaller also got huge upside stapled to it.
>>
>>98060575
>I haven't a clue what's up with their heads being baskets holding light
Blizzardwank shit Magic artists started doing because WoW defined fantasy in the 00s. Same shit appears on flamekin and their offshoots
