Noop question: does the paint retarder contribute to paint thinning?
>>
>>98067277
They make the paint stay wet for longer, slowing down the evaporation.
>>
>>98067262
no there is zero difference in normal sandpaper of X grit sandpaper at Y store.

what I would recommend is hobby specific sanding sticks though, as they're meant for getting into tight spots we frequently need.
>>
>>98067290
I don't know about how japan does it but some random brands of sanding sticks/pads have been wildly inconsistent in my experience.
>>
>>98067277
>>98067285
I mean, when the color recipe is 2 part grey : 1 part black : 1 part water for example, will adding the retarder have effect on this ratio?
>>
>>98067305
you should be mixing everything with set ratios first and then adding reducer as necessary to obtain the desired consistency.

Early start of a space marine 2 diorama, eventually this will (hopefully) be these two on top of a pile of dead tyranids.
Currently partway through the white armour. Both it and the space wolf armour are a pain in different ways, the white armour is tough to glaze, the space wolf russ grey base coat has awful coverage (I know it's a layer paint but apparently that's the eavy metal starting point, albeit I suspect they airbrush it on.).

Can confirm 400 grit works perfectly for usual mold lines cleaning, you can go higher if you really want a smooth finish after using the 400. Although if you start doing conversions, kitbashing etc having a lower grit and some basic metal files helps a lot

I bought a pack with some sandpaper sheets of different grit for dirt cheap long ago, I just cut small stripes from them and use those for precision work etc
>>
>>98068573
Thanks anon
I use 800-1200 grit for my usual cleanup, and it takes a while. I have some files, buy they're on the other end of the spectrum. Sounds like I need some 400-600 grit to serve as the workhorses. I had thought that'd be too rough, but good to hear that it works, so thanks!
>>
>>98068385
Nta but lol, imagine trying to stir up drama/anger in /wip/. Relax mate, grab a mini and push some pigment around, there's no need for that here.
>>
>>98068591
I use 800-1200 for Gunpla, which requires a smoother finish because those kits are either left unpainted or painted with lacquers, which show a large amount of underlying surface detail when dry.
You don't need that smooth of a finish for Warhammer, since you'll be completely painting them with matte/satin acrylics, and probably won't be using lacquers.
Defo save yourself some time and use 400.

If stored somewhere with strong humidity/moisture, it can fuck with varnishes. Tho again, this is pretty strange. I have models that are ~1 year old with AK ultra matte and they don't show any trouble so far. Maybe I should experiment more with VMS Flat, after all.

>>98068591

>>98068621
it's important to point out that this guy is using matt on top of a gloss varnish, so it's less 'matt turns gloss' and more 'matt stops working'

I'm not sure about the alternatives. There's Vallejo ultra matte, which is a lot less flat, so no. There's also VMS, which has a REALLY beautiful finish, but bruh, it's probably the ficklest varnish to apply, it has to be PERFECT otherwise you are getting speckling/frosting. I'm thinking about checking out MIG ultra matte, it seems to be quite popular.

Found this on sale for 20 at a hobby store. I figured it was worth a shot, i've been experimenting with oil washes on my mechs recently. Vs 7$ a tube for ak or abtelung at my lfgs i figured this will probably do just as well and I have so many colors to choose from now

Anyone got tips on oils? I havent been varnishing before applying and its mostly been ok
>>
>>98069039
>Anyone got tips on oils?

Leave the bit of paint you're going to use on a piece of cardboard for 15-30 mins before using it, the cardboard will absorb some of the oils and give you a shorter drying time.

Be extremely gentle when rubbing off excess paint after the wash. Like, don't really apply any kind of pressure. Being gentle is much more important than having layers of varnish underneath or whatever, in my experience.

Silver for the mask. Dark purple for the outside of the cloak, a burgundy color for the inside. Do a diamond patter on his bent leg there, in the colors of the troupe he is fighting with. Otherwise do the diamond pattern in red and blue.
>>
>>98069177
White is not a color, nor is grey or black. They go with everything.
You can either go for contrast by going to the opposite end of the color wheel with something like orange, or you can go for harmony by picking an adjacent color like purple or green.

>I just need some dirt and mud for small (5x5) dioramas as a general ground cover.
If you want top of the line real-like mud for dioramas, I recommend VMS Smart Mud. Very realistic texture straight after application, and you can shape it pretty well in case you need something like tank track marks and such, because, compared to texture pastes, it comes a lot drier (though you can dillute it).
Otherwise the usual AK Dark Earth is a classic. Apply, sprinkle with a mix of leaves/grass/etc. and you are halfway done.

I have 3 of the BA version I grabbed before the purge of all the actually good BA kits. These and Contemptor are peak Dread design. I don't much care for the newer ones.

You definitely should, it's a really nice model despite its age. I'll be getting it eventually but I think I want to paint a Slann first.

Been working on a chaos space marine with a flamer. Not very happy with how I did the canisters, but it looks nice enough from a distance. Once he's done being varnished I'll see what I can do about making the barrel of his flamer look a little broiled.

This is the pva/toilet paper texture.
Just place a single sheet on whatever you want to texture then brush on the watered down glue to plaster it in place, it will wrinkle on it's own as it dries.
Great way to harden and texture styrofoam in particular but works on anything.

I forgot how tedious gunpla stuff is. It's fine, I still have 4 days left. First rust pass done. It's a bit splotchy and will do some more intentional work after the black accent parts are also done and it's in fewer pieces.
>>
>>98072054
Except it's almost a lost secret now with everyone jumping to premade and printed terrain, glued sand is still ubiquitous but the use of shit tickets is seemingly grog territory.
>>
Does this read as chrome in a desert?
>>
>>98072353
Yes, though you need to shade the crevices.
>>
>>98072353
Yeah, LGTM.
I think the sky parts could maybe be brighter, or the spot reflections of the sun could be a bit more bloomed out, but I'm not sure about that unless I were to paint over it and test, just a thought.
>>
>>98070836
Looks dangerously cheesy. Definitely my favorite version of the model
>>
>>98072367
>>98072370
Nice, thanks. I think I'll make the white parts a bit bigger then? But mostly in the middle of each panel, to sell the idea that it's glare cast by the sun.

I was going to use an oil wash to recess shade, but I'm a little worried about it ruining the effect. It'll be fine, right?

Nice. I like how you integrated the controls and electronics into the actual design.
If I make an overly elaborate secret santa box again this year and don't kill myself before then, some kind of mechanical thing would be a neat gimmick for the year.

>>
>>98072661
is it better or worse than maston
>>
>>98072659
you see the print lines on the model's shoulder? that's called "stair stepping" it means he's using a low-resolution printer and/or didnt antialias his model when slicing it, its so bad there it doesnt even look like he used anything newer than a mars 3
to the anon who's work that is i just ask that you get a better printer and/or antialias your models, and stop using cheapo dogshit for primer, it'll make your priming look way less bad if you do both of these things
>>
>>98072668
looks like maston is similar to it but im not a euro
>>
>>98072669
It's a knockoff mars 2 i got in like 2019. I'm not fighting in the big leagues of /wip/ I'm in the poorhammer league and I'm fine with that. I might try some surface filler on it though, the stepping is pretty ugly.

I know, I had planned on using that white for an undercoat for really bright red trim. It just dawned on me that I'm way too time-poor and lazy for multiple layers of base coats, and the scheme has far more black than trim. Just gonna grissaile it (slap-cope*) picrel the scheme:

Do you also happen to be the Thousand Sons poster? If so, I ended up with Tsons in part because of your posts in /40kg/.
>>
>>98072653
as long as its just the PRIMER and not the 2x "paint + primer" there is nothing wrong with Rustoleum. I would use it over Vallejo airbrush acrylic primer if I didn't have access to enamel primers anymore.
>>
>>98072857
>not the 2x "paint + primer"
..What's wrong with that? I've always used it and never had any adhesion problems on metal, resin or plastic. As long as you varnish as you go / as a final step it shouldn't matter as long as the paint stays on while working on the model, no?
>>
>>98072862
I avoid the "paint + primer" as I find it to be a thicker coat and it sometime chokes fine detail. I have a can kicking around in my kit that I use on FDM terrain prints to flood the layer lines.
>>
what I prefer
>>
>>98072878
versus
>>
>>98072882
That's what I picked up, hopefully it is a bit thick , because I don't mind if I lose some detail if it fills in some smaller layer lines, I'm painting mostly 3d printed stuff. Thanks for the information friend
>>
Alright fellas,
Im gonna order some stuff from AK
Any suggestions on must have colours (be it regular acrylics or the new quick gen), pigments, texture paste, tools, whatever?

As for the colours im gonna order (so you dont suggest them)
Dead red AK11083
Slime green AK11275
Very dark brown AK11384 (thanks to the anon who recommended it as a rhinox hide replacement)

Im all ears

for me, it's fiddly bits. that price is in dollarydoos and i have no idea how it's so cheap. even rustoleum feels pretty fucking expensive when you grab a few cans of the stuff. not my precious fiddly bits though, you can load up a trolley full of these cunts and barely notice the hit on the wallet. the flat black is not perfectly matt but it's definitely better than painting over a satin primer that's for sure
>>
AP speedpaints or Vallejo xpress?
I’m not buying another fucking Citadel pot. I’m sick of them.

Heavily depends on what you are doing. Overall, my favorite AK colors:
>Grimy Grey
>German Grey (my favorite gray color)
>Rubber Black
>Middle Stone
>Medium Sand
>Medium Olive
>Mud Brown (it's a very universal warm brown)
>Carmine
>Olive Drab Base (AFV)
>Canvas Tone (AFV)

Enamels:
>Streaking Grime (the classic one)
>Winter Streaking Grime (it's a bit brighter and greener)
>Black Pin Wash
>Dark Umber Pin wash
>Brown Earth Deposits
>Light Dust Deposits
>Dark Mud
>Rain Marks

Pastes:
>Dark Earth (if I was to recommend ONE texture paste, it would be this one)
>Concrete (very specific, but it works great, tho get a spatula or at least something flat to use it with).

seconding rubber black
it's what i used for the black basecoat on >>98073270 and i really like it because it's about the darkest grey you can get that still responds to a wash
i like AK's rust washes too, they're not as full on as dirty down rust but due to the nature of enamels you can get some cool effects with them that you can't with DD
>>
>>98073245
It's also objectively shit.
>>
>>98073323
Afaik, Rubber Black is like the third most popular AK paint, right after black and white.
