Started my Third Star League SLDF army. SLDF Lance, supported by a Point of Snow Raven ProtoMechs. For the First Lord, and the IlClan!
>>98365807Are protomechs still a thing in Il-Clan? I thought FASA/CGL tried to bury them because they're really good and the art is goofy with the fluff aspect of "uh the pilots go insane and die in 2-3 years".
>>98365850Snow Ravens and Hell's Horses still use 'em in canon.
>>98365850>Are protomechs still a thing in Il-Clan?Yup, Ravens and Horsies :D
What should pulse lasers sound like? I was idly thinking it would be neat if instead of a pew pew blaster, they sounded like a giant SLR mirror flapping in burst mode.

>>98365945If you want to play literally anything other than 40k/what your friends play/AMG existing IP stuff until the license expires, you have to bootstrap the local scene yourself, often while fighting against LGS owners understandably looking dimly on someone using their space to promote something they don't sell.
So we've got CGL employees making our /btg topics now. Wonderful.
Playing with tanks tomorrow for the first time, still have no idea how skidding works.
>>98365972So I've learned. Granted the guys from my old Basic platoon were interested in playing, my only problem is we're in different companies and I cannot do easily reach them. It sucks. Although. One wants to learn Aerospace. I don't regret not being able to play that.

Between the MRM and C3 changes, is the Draconis Combine - dare I say it - back?
I haven't played BTech since my minis were made by Ral Partha. Starting to get back into the game, slowly, though my first question is...is there a resource to see what mechs come in what boxes, the 4 packs I mean. A grand list of everything.
>>98366476https://www.sarna.net/wiki/List_of_ForcePacksThis should be at least the start of what you need, from there you can see the contents of each pack and other details.
>>98366476>>98366498Whilst a lot of the old designs have been visually improved upon with newer miniatures, it's also worth noting Ral Partha still make mechs up to a certain point of time, like you can still get a whole bunch of stuff up to the Project Phoenix releases and various Word of Blake jihad era types, and I think they are still cheaper than Iron Wind Metals, especially if you're in the UK or Europe, and double especially since they tend to have a couple of sales per year that you might be able to take advantage of. Handy if you're trying to get hold of something they cover, things you can't be bothered to track down in getting prints of (like the mainstay of several periphery states the Marshal is still the same old metal model if you can't get a print of the one redesign), or in particular if you want more battle armour options.
>>98366498I usehttps://www.sarna.net/wiki/Miniatures_-_Catalyst_Game_LabsBut you have to skip past the first chunk of it since that's all the skinny, out of print alpha strike plastics.
>>98366498TY I'll check that out to figure out what I might want to try to acquire. Also haven't painted in decades.>>98366547TY for that bit of info. While I haven't played tabletop in decades, I did play a little MWO and saw a lot of the changes in mech design, some I like, some not as much.

I've reviewed the rules on Charging. I didn't see anything against this, but I just want to confirm. There's nothing that says you can't charge a unit up a hill, right?
>>98366733As long as you have the extra movement to go uphill.
>>98366387They should've leaned into LAM bomb bays with more LAM variants built around them. They seem really versatile.
Just finished my second BT paintjob! This time it was the Commando from my AGoAC box. Like the Locust I posted a few weeks ago, this guy's in the 7th Pesht Regulars' colors. My microsol/set finally arrived in the mail so I was able to try my hand at a couple decals this time.I still feel that the paintjob came out pretty thick, but I think it turned out better than the Locust did, mainly on account of using vallejo for the white base instead of the crap I used before. Hopefully I Honored the Dragon at least a little.I have bottle of Folkart white that I want to try next, might try it on the Venom maybe. That way I can know which white I'll want to use when I get to the Panther.
>>98366808And now I understand how mechs can fall from high heights. Should be interesting to try this out sometime. Hopefully soon.
>>98365807SLDF uses stars now don't they?
>>98367013Most of the time if they're high up, you'd be better off doing a push attack. It's not telegraphed as hard and you can still use torso guns.
>>98367028Although you can only push if you're on the same level as them. If they're up on a peak, you would have to charge to displace them.
>>98366928If you want your white to come out a bit smoother, you can get a makeup brush, get grey spray primer or black if you want an ad hoc panel-line solution, and dry brush lighter and lighter greys. White is notorious for looking thick and splotchy when painted on directly, so in order for it to look good, you have to build layers of lighter and lighter grays until it's effectively white.Nice job anon, for a second paint job, that's good progress on those decals.
>>98367023Just the LARPers do
Is there any reason or advantage to use arty guns (thumper, sniper, long tom...) over the Arrow IV, especially when using the mech as a platform?
>>98367372You don't need TAG for tube artillery. But you do for Arrow IV.
I really like the LGR Ontos, bros...
>>98367372Much longer range, more ammo per ton, can't be intercepted by AMS.
>>98367409Arrow IV explosive doesn't need TAG, it behaves just like arty shells. It just doesn't get the 20 damage in one location that homing gets, it's the 4 clumps of 5 damage that arty delivers.>>98367461Very weird to see the androids she's clearly been fighting on this cover when there's nothing like that in Battletech canon, but I just chalk it up to early installment weirdness

How important are the ASFs? More than the mechs?
>>98365713>New Is Always Better Than OldThis is correct. If you started playing before 2024, you aren't welcome in Battletech spaces. Leave this fanbase.
>>98366033>we've got CGL employees making our /btg topics now.Nothing wrong with that. New things ARE better than old things. That's how progress works. If old things are what you like, please stop playing Battletech and leave our fandom. We don't want you here.
>>98367461This is an unnecessarily sexualized image that CGL would be better off divesting themselves from. Modern gamers don't want to see sexualized pics of white women.
>>98367974More important. Without space forces you will be chased away from the planet orbit before you will get a chance to deploy your troops. This is why HBS Battletech depiction of operations was skewed. A semi-mobile space station with no weapons was allowed to operate with impunity for weeks and months. Treating aerospace fighters like lostech while they are as common as mechs.

>>98368087Procurement has made questionable decisions in the past, but really: what would an ancient heavy like Von Rohrs bring that a Dragon couldn't?
>>98368087The earliest mech to go totally extinct is the Hector, because even for the age of war it sucked.
>>98368152Baby Behemoth
>>98367495>Very weird to see the androids she's clearly been fighting on this cover when there's nothing like that in Battletech canonIt's a Robotech reference. They're designs from Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross.
>>98368008As a modern gamer, I disagree. You do not speak for all of us. Also, they need to be bigger.
>>98367974Easily the most important asset to the point they break the setting.
>>98367461I think I have that book
>>98368087Anything it can do a Griffin can do better.
>>98367023No. SLDF still uses Lances while the Clans use Stars. There's a weird divide between Clan and Star League military forces in the IlClan League.
Why CGL can't stick to their announced plans? I eant my stuff, even if it reprint! Also, why faction packs are iClan, but faction manuals are CI.
>>98367495>Very weird to see the androidsFASA did not have battledroids/battletech figured out yet in the early days. They did not know how much robots they will have, how many people it will take to pilot a mech, will mechs have windows at all.It was very touch-and-go at first.

>>98368603Anything is justified if it drives sales, and colossals did that. Battletech should do something similar. An evolving meta that obsolete old units and introduces new ones is the only way to make a game system financially viable. You had 50 years or whatever to play with old grog introtech stuff, it's long past time to retire all of that boomer crap and make people play with new units.

>>98370941Davions are stunted in more than just height. NAIS would be considered a cram school on New Samarkand.
>>98370830A few other things to share from this particular game:Tried out using colored popsicle sticks for fire declaration, like I read on some forum. They rock actually, I'm going to keep using them or something like them for future games. The way I did it is I pick similar colors for a specific type of weapon (green for Medium Lasers, blue for PPCs, yellow for LRMs, etc). I broke them in half to shorten them and to have distinctive "sides" of an arrow. When attack declarations come, people just grab the sticks and place them next to the target in a stack, with the broken half pointing roughly in the direction of the origin. The sticks are ordered inversely from the order of the attacks (ie the top of the stack is the first attack). When resolution comes round, we just solve target by target and remove the sticks. The person that fired keeps the sticks for reference on how much heat they need to add come heat phase.I found this way better than jotting things down in a pad, and it adds some visual flair to the table to know who's shooting who with what. It's fun when you look at a mini and see it surrounded by several stacks of popsicle sticks because it's getting focused down.
>>98370978This reminds me I really need to figure out a name for the Combine school in the Girls und Mech-verse.
>>98370993Forgot to mention, the sticks have the weapon name, damage, and heat info written on them for reference.

>>98371021>>98371023To add on the theme for the Combine school is somewhere for daughters of disappointed samurai who wished they had sons instead to send them to be out the way, but the school secretly has some of the best mechwarrior training around.
>>98371023The Hojo Masako Academy of Onna-Musha Propriety
>>98370993Another thing I loved about this match was how it ended. We were doing MCA's Instant Action mission "Capture and Control" which is about having 3 hexes along the center of them map that the defender starts controlling. To capture them, a mech must end their turn in the hex. Whoever has more zones under their control come end of turn 7 is the winner. The match was decided by a DFA: a Locust with a broken hip took over a control zone, and a Shadow Hawk made a last ditch effort to displace it from the hex. It jumped and came crashing down on the damaged Locust from the top ropes. The attack hit and the Locust was pushed away, letting the SH steal the objective.
>>98371039I like it anon. Thanks.
>>98370868I love the Red Alert thing the Dracs have going on in artwork like this.
>>98371058A competitor in Mechwarrior Academy department. Well are you going to ever simulate a game from there for us?
>>98365713Had another round of Scouring Sands yesterday. I swapped my Avatar out for Timby and immediately nearly got it shot out from under me, only pure luck enabled it to not get hit by Artillery whilst on 1 structure remaining. In fairness, I should not have used it to try and bait out the Marauder IIC for a rear Melee attack from my TSM'd up Emperor. Not least because I was using an S variant and do more damage with that instead.Abysmal attack dice on my part though, only pure stubborness, persistance and me going "FUCK YOU DICE. I'M SPENDING ALL MY EDGE TO MAKE THOSE HITS." got me through.
>>98371139I was the one who ran the Davion vs Steiner academy game. I just haven't had any time to devote to it until very recently. If I do have time I'm thinking of a Comstar vs Combine match but don't want to get in the way of the anon doing their match with Liao, Marik, Kurita and Merc cause I am looking forward to the results of that match.
>>98371150I am that anon. I would say not to wait until I'm done if you want to do one. Mine will be slow going to complete and since I have long term plans of doing 4 of these battles in total, I won't be fully done with this plot thread for quite some time. Honestly, I'm anticipating at least 6 months, but giving myself a year for it really. So if you use me as your excuse, you'll never get one done. You have given me an idea however. Part of the lore for my anti-Federated Commonwealth Academy is that it's being run by Comstar. I'm not saying to put any simulated game on hold until I'm done, but perhaps you can put your Comstar vs. Kurita match on hold until I am. Then when I'm done with mine, perhaps we make it a crossover match between the 2 schools, though with what I'm planning for potential pilot growth, it might end up being a bit of a mismatch. Or maybe it'll be okay to do some sort of 8v12. Or perhaps the 4 Kurita pilots in my game will want to return to the DC and represent Kurita in that match? Just some things to consider in the background. There's still plenty of time to decide what to do in the meantime.Perhaps a skirmish between St. Fiacre of Breuil High School for Girls & The Hojo Masako Academy of Onna-Musha Propriety? I wouldn't mind a return appearance for my girl to solidify the lore I created for her.

Might support the Great Houses with the goal of destroying the nascent Star League, a "Crusade" of Star Adders and Scorpions helping the Lyrans deal with the Falcons and Wolves, helping rebels against the Rasalhague Dominions, and using their clan Watches to help instigate conflicts within the sphere while actively destroying attempts by the sphere to expand and colonize worlds outside the sphere while making colonies of their own.>>98371281>Need more clans to boost numbersWhy? >>98371048By the way, what's a good lore excuse for that Capture and Control mission, do you figure? In our case the mission involved mercenaries hired by House Marik to stop pirates from getting FWL cargo info from computers located on the objective hexes, but I feel that's very shoddy and half-assed. I'm sure /btg/ could come up with something better

>>98368571How can you not identify obvious satire?
>>98370317I swear if mg ammo killed a mech.... especially my mech.
I managed to use both a push and a charge attack tonight. The charge actually won since it displaced the mech that was standing on the objective on the final turn.
Reading the Ghost Bear Civil War books tonight, starting with Star Crossed Mechwarriors. I'm actually impressed. This book makes the Dominion civil war make a lot more sense by emphasizing how the collape of the Republic tanked the Dominion economy and that's really what pushed the Dominion into internal conflict. Characters so far are pretty flat, but no more so than in other military sci fi.
>>98371943It's all fucking retarded because in the Early DA, we're told the Bears are the Stoners biggest clan backers, but then they do fucking squat other than taking a few systems like Vega and never get called into the final ilClan fight. Then, they have a retarded civil war. Oh, let's not forget the fact that while the C-Bill is cratering, the Stone is somehow kept afloat outside the Wall in 3145. None of it makes any damn sense.
>>98371957It's actually a plot point early in tbe book that the Dominion is worried that the Stones they've collected won't be honored by whoever wins the ilClan trial. It's not explicitly spelled out but implied that this is yet another marching band in the parade of the Dominion's economic woes after. You should try reading sometime.
>>98371973I did. How the hell do you think the Stone is worth anything in 3150 when the Republic has been dead and holed up since 3135? That should should be valueless for over a decade.
So who do you think will win: the Bears or the Dragon? I don't think CGL will allow Luthien to fall so...
>>98371976The foreshadowing is very heavy in the Dracs' favor, specifically the quote of "a short victorious war" - that's a quote from a Russian minister referring confidently to the upcoming war with Japan in the early 1900s. Japan absolutely trashed Russia in that war. Pretty heavy handed implication that it won't go well for the bears when they fight space japan.
>>98371976If the Davions and Ravens stay out of it, the Combine should weather the storm in good fashion; if Kurita gets wishboned, I expect they'll lose Luthien as a viable capital world in a similar situation to when the Suns had New Avalon occupied for a time and the Combine will spend some years plotting a reconquista to get it all back.
>>98372012Right now the Ravens' touman is fighting the Capellans on Alaric's behalf, and the Davions are still recovering from retaking the Dragon's Tongue. So I don't expect the war to spread.
>>98372012IIRC both Teddy and Hanse said if Luthien falls the entire Combine will crumble. No longer the case after 100 years now?
>>98372053After 100 years of having a shared border with Clanners, I'm pretty sure Kurita's taken steps to have that not be the case anymore.
>>98367013>And now I understand how mechs can fall from high heights.Too bad you can't DFA by running off a Cliff Edge...>>98367587>What should I search in Amazon for the Box of Doom you guys mentioned? pill box?Pretty much any Plastic Organizer will work.>>98368755>Fuck that, you get 100 tons and nothing more, simple asWorks for me!>>98370830Oh man, that reminds me of my first "Battle Royal" free-for-all, where I had to end up walking out of the Circle of Equals to my Death because my Archer was Matchstick'd.>>98370993You could probably cleanly cut the popsicle sticks in half for less potential splinters.>>98371004And yeah, it really helps normies process the game when you give them templates like this.>>98371731I mean that's as good of a Watsonian explanation as you can probably get; Not a lot can be done standing around for 10 seconds in a particular area.>>98371298>Anons, if you were hired to create a new clan for the Homeworld Clans, what would they be like? Not sure if my usual concept of Homesteading Terraformers would work with what little we know of the HW Clans at this point.
>>98371298Something like a mixture of the Cylons and the Draka, where the trueborns are body-hopping tech immortals and the freebirths are gene-designed for permanent and inviolable servitude to their trueborn masters, enslaved without chains to their purpose.
>>98371298I forget who said it, but an anon in another thread mentioned the idea of the HW Clans degenerating such that when they return, the mech technology has been frozen in amber, but they swarm with a horde of protomechs and BA superior to existing tech.
>>98371989I look forward to the Rasalhague relief fleet meeting the Combine in battle over the planet Tsushima.
>>98371298I do kinda like the Draka idea but would take it in a different route>Clan is obsessed with genetic perfection>No jumping castes, if you wash out as a warrior you're liquidated>Even worker castes are bred for their role, you were bred from two bloodlines good at laying bricks and working assembly lines>Freebirths are essentially unheard of since most are aborted
>>98372127That could be cool. I think a lot of what makes the Clans appealing is being space weirdos that talk in English IIC and do a bunch of weird things.
>>98372129I could see them also leaning heavily into the clan culture and rigidly enforcing it, maybe even adding new rules to prevent fraternization between castes. Could even suggest that some have the goal of eventual speciation.
>>98372109>where the trueborns are body-hopping tech immortalsMan I got SO much shit for trying to suggest something like this as an alternative why the Inner Sphere remained Neo-Feudalistic; Where your Planetary Lord is basically the fuck-up caricature of a personality upload in your HPG.>>98372127Problem I see with that is an even bigger death spiral than the Steel Vipers purification madness; No trans-Caste mobility leads to greater and greater hyper specialization until you have an unthinking super organism that can't adapt to change.I mean Bees can make Queens from Drones for this very reason.
>>98372152I couldn't see that kind of tech being a Star League track, much less in use after its fall, but remove SL tech from SL's setting and let it grow out of sight and mind? The Clans would have been the perfect Petri dish to develop that way if the lore thinkers had wanted to lean real hard into Humanity 2.0 bordering on monstrous inhumanity.
What's going to happen to Megamek with CGL changing the rules?
>>98372171New update.
>>98372165>I couldn't see that kind of tech being a Star League trackEh, they were actually pretty close, I think the Space Defense Systems were regularly trained with the brain recordings of Admirals and such...
>>98372201I think ingrained ethical concerns would have cockblocked the development shy of realtime mind downloads into clone bodies, but Nicky K's Brave New World wouldn't have had such an impediment to advancement, especially with a caste system foundation to build from.
>>98372209>I think ingrained ethical concerns would have cockblocked the developmentI mean maybe, but then again this IS a setting where they nearly nuked themselves back into pre-Space Flight and yet still think killing a few hundred thousand by sword unthinkable.
>>98372215>where they nearly nuked themselves back into pre-Space FlightThey keep saying that happened, but then undermined it with later lore enough that 30 years after Helm it completely reversed that trend down the spiral.
>>98372222The implication is that it's not so much the Helm Memory Core itself that completely reversed it, it's that ComStar could no longer effectively strangle innovation through communication control when everyone suddenly was operating on a level playing field. >>98372152You're not going to genetically select for anything more than general traits. An inability to adapt would be cultural, not genetic. It's a pretty apt drawback for such a Clan to have; the Clans are in essence a small population in isolation, what works in those circumstances won't necessarily survive an introduction to a wider ecosystem. We already saw it with the Clan invasion and how a system designed around limited warfare constrained by a series of formal regulations was quickly put to the side the moment they had to deal with enemies who were unobliged to follow it.
>>98372222Well that's kind of the point; Fictional History will bend to accommodate the needs of the Fiction. When your game is based around high tech giant stompy war robots, you need an excuse for why you can still deploy high tech giant stompy war robots.>>98372270>You're not going to genetically select for anything more than general traits. But that's just it, you aren't selecting for general traits, but specific traits to optimize your result. Thus to get a better bricklayer, you breed something that more and more can ONLY lay bricks. Now while they obviously aren't going to survive getting to the biological machine designed to ONLY lay bricks, it's still very easy to specialize to the point where your society collapses because you have more bricklayers than farmers.
>>98372270I guess my gripe is the whole "tell, don't show" aspect of this purported tech degeneration, it gets talked about a lot but no one seems particularly bothered by it to the point where it's any actual impediment to existence. We hear about entire worlds starving from logistical collapse, but there's never a scene like in Man of Steel, where Zod and his people visit all the old Kryptonian colonies and find nothing but detritus of the dead, who seem to have died fighting each other for survival. It's a milquetoast grimdark setting that never achieves grim or dark in any meaningful sense. The largest bother to the Star League's collapse is DOME being erased, it's irrelevant to the setting at large.
>>98372305Well again, fictional history bends to accommodate the needs of the Fiction; Comstock is supposedly an example of such logistical collapse... Until you examine it closer and realize such a hyperbolic example doesn't even hold up under it's own internal logic.
>>98372319Boot World is so fucking cool
>>98371769
>>98372215>and yet still think killing a few hundred thousand by sword unthinkable. If you’re referring to Kentares, that was 52 Million people who were killed by the sword.I agree that in pure numbers that’s still pretty small compared to the literal billions who died across the 1st SW, but the thing that made Kentares so deplorable to the IS was the hands-on nature of it.Nuking a world is impersonal. You hit a button and watch the boom. Sure, you could come by later and look at the aftermath, but you weren’t actually there killing them yourself. It’s still horrific, but considering the total war you’re fighting and that you’re probably trying to pacify a world or deny resources to the enemy, that’s just kinda the way the cookie crumbles.Going out of your way to have your soldiers personally shoot/stab 52 million people to death one at a time is quite a different deed. It’s an astoundingly manpower-intensive task that, in comparison to the nuke, takes far more time and investment. To the rest of the sphere, there’s no reason to use this method of mass slaughter except out of sheer sadism.

>>98369940Does anyone else still use the old card standees? Or is just all models only for everyone now?I used to find that a couple of boards and a bag of loose card standees could be easily carried, especially when walking to a freind's house for a game. Thay are also easy to store and take up almost no space at all.

>>98372387This is a blue board, sir, we'll not have that pervert talk here
>>98370317Ammo explosions can be a bitch at times, but also fun. When playing Megamek, I had a crusader pinned against a bunker and being pummeled by three Dragons. One punched through into the torse and set of the LRM ammo - the explosion vaporised my Crusader (they carry a lot of ammo), but also destroying two of the dragons and crippling the third.
>>98372384There are current cardboard standees you can get. My group has pulled them out on occasion, usually for opfor mechs that nobody had a regular figure for. The fact that lots of them can be transported in a small container is a plus. I have a buncg in my army bag, but have never used them.

Has anyone else gotten new respect for a mech from the games?I've taken a real liking to the Awesome-8T. On paper the problem of it not being 3 PPCs on legs is pretty obvious but functionally it really fucks. It has hole punchers, crit seekers, enough heat sinks to fire any three of its weapons every turn and alpha strike if you need it. I'm debating shelling out for an IWM mini of it to round out a mercenary lance

>>98374158Depends on the country, but it's more that Hanse is like almost 50 when they get married, and she's 15. Not 18 in 3025.
>>98373717>>98373863I don't think I'm using Catapults "correctly". I tend to leave them at medium range for fire support but I don't get hits that often (even with a veteran pilot) and their armor goes unused. In next games I'll try moving them to around range 7 to keep the LRM-15's at Short range and actually tank some hits
>>98374172Monarchies throughout history have done arranged marriages for political reasons where there were age disparities. It's presented as a reflection of that historic reality, and nowhere in the fiction is Hanse depicted as a sexual predator, unless you count the non-consensual dicking he gave the Capellans.
>>98374200Remember that if someone tries to get inside your minimum range, that means they want to be kicked.
Why does it feel like, when military formation is used or described, it's either the company, regiment or legion? Not just in BT but also in other games or works. Historic reason?
>>98374248Which I would grant if it had been treated as such and not as some grand love match by the books. And also most of the time that was done to make sure the bride was a virgin and because the average lifespan of even royalty was in the 50's at best.Although... some of that was because kings kept going on dangerous hunting expeditions and starting succession crises when their horse chucked them on their heads. Or deciding that getting involved in the Thirty Years War sounds like a good idea.Protip: It wasn't.
I'm trying to help a friend build a Northwind Highlanders lance appropriate for 3028. I checked the RAT in MegaMek for these mercs and it doesn't even list the Highlander in it. I have to set the year to 3055 for there to be HGN-732 at weight 9. What gives? I thought they were famous for having lots of those machines even in SuccWars?
>>98374335>People underestimate the BlackjackProbably because they keep hearing people saying its bad so they never bother to use it when in reality its quite a strong medium.>>98374384Force Manual Mercenaries might be a better guide to use.
>>98374377A Company is about the smallest thing you'd actually task for meaningful operations and a regiment is the biggest thing where individual characters can matter. In BT, it's also the biggest unit in common use. Brigades only exist as a shared name and armies aren't even a thing in most factions.
>>98374407>Force Manual MercenariesI'm checking that right now. For NH it says:>Even during the Succession Wars, the Highlanders were known for the large number of Highlander BattleMechs in their ranks. Most of these retained their Star League-era weaponry and components well into the Succession Wars>The Northwind Highlanders may add access to the Highlander HGN-733 for 0 FP during the Late Succession WarsThis is a bit confusing as the HGN-733 is not Star League era weaponry and components. It's a downgradeFrom what I gather reading the Faction Point rules, you can add duplicates of the same unit by paying 1 FP per copy of the variant
>>98374441Also: how come MUL doesn't list HGN-733 as being available to Mercenaries then? If it's usable by NH. Is that a blind spot where it doesn't cover specific Merc units unless it's available to all mercs?
>>98374449>TDR-5SE says hi
>>98374460So we found a hole in the MUL apparently because HGN-733 should have Merc availability
>>98374441Yeah it is completely confusing as parts of it do contradict each other. I just use it as a guideline mostly and personally would say that this means if you are playing an introtech match then feel free to go nuts with the 733 Highlander.>>98374449>>98374471MUL is not perfect and Northwind Highlanders are not the only mercs with the issue of not having access to mechs they should have.
>>98374513Reason I bring it up is that I'm the same anon from this post >>98247413 from a month ago. My friend and opponent thought it was legal to field the royal highlander in 3028 for NH precisely because of the blurb about them having Highlanders with Star League era tech well into SuccWarsSo if there are contradictions my case gets shakier about why he can't bring his fancy toys. I think I have to just pull that card of "look buddy Introtech shouldn't have DHS, Ferro-Fibrous, and Artemis IV".I asked if he wanted to play Clan era and he said no lmao. DHS for me but not for thee!
>>98374560Also HGN-732b is only made available to IS after 3068 when the New Dallas Memory Core is found apparently, all the way in the Jihad era. Not even Comstar had more than 5 of those stored away if the MUL is accurate there
>>98374560The CGL combat manuals and later force manuals have been a complete disaster as they have retconned Star League tech from being virtually non existent to constantly appearing where they shouldn't. You can of course abuse this to your advantage. If your friend is being a dick about forcing a Royal Highlander though just play the 21st Centauri Lancers. I am pretty sure he wouldn't have fun facing a lance of what they can bring.
>>98374633>Late in the Third Succession War, the Lancers discovered a hidden Star League cache containing fully-intact Star League Defense Force ’Mechs and tanks. What's the longest (turn-wise) game of Battletech you've ever played? Or heard someone else played?Wondering if ever in the history of the game a player has ran out of ammo on one of them bins that has like 45 shots. Seems like kind of dead weight. Then again I've only played Introtech so maybe some crazy shit applies in later eras that lets you go DAKKA DAKKA with those
>>98375231i still remember the time a newish player brought a rifleman to an LGS pickup game where the opponent brought vtolshe was so sure he was going to have the edge until he realized the anti-air bonuses don't actually exist unless you're playing with quirks (which they weren't)his rifleman was laughably ineffective against the enemy air assets and he was sad
>>98375210JM6-D4 is arguably the best one I can think of where there isn't really a Rifleman that matches it. Only others I can make an argument are basically glass cannons but can be powerful in right circumstances.

>>98375255Did he not even bring flak?

>>98375274IS doesn't get LB's until later I think, which are the only ones that can equip Cluster ammo for Flak attacks
>>98375306Precision as well can be nasty. Just a shame it is a glass cannon.>>98375326AC Flak ammo is a thing anon?
>>98375332I don't doubt you're right but where does it say this in the rulebooks? In Total Warfare I didn't find an entry for Flak Ammo, only Cluster Ammo which can be used by LB's only and has a Flak effect
>>98375343Honestly not sure why it isn't in Total Warfare. Its legit one of the oldest alt ammunition types in Battletech history.
Not-So-Total Warfare didn't have the same ring to it
more like partial warfare
>>98375408Careful now I think you might be giving CGL name ideas for the next rulebook.
If you want a quick reference for a weapon and where the source is on it to find rules for say different ammo types I highly suggest https://mordel.net/equipment.php?a=vClick on say an SRM launcher and it'll give stats but also all the ammo available for said launcher and what page of a book it is on. >>98375757 (Me)Weird thing is BMM definitely has rules for fire/smoke spread, and I did not find those in TW, so I guess those are advaanced. I thought BMM was meant to be fully encompassed by TW, guess not

Given that the Aerospace Assets rule will be on the new Core rulebook, I'm pretty sure that the Flak ammo made into the base rule

>>98375768BMM includes some rules from TO where they're relevant specifically to Battlemech slug-fests.I'll admit I'm a little annoyed going through and finding that Flak is indeed absent, but in lore at the very least Flak was depreciated some; precisely because cluster was a lot better at it.On that note, holy shit without Quirks there's no Rifleman that can do its job in the inner sphere before FedCom.

Will this be big enough for the Box of Doom to be used with 12mm dice?
>>9837608212mm is roughly 0.5 inches, so a pair of dice is almost 1 inch.
>>98376021Jagermech has the same problem if you want to use it as an anti-air unit.Pandarus with its flattened range modifiers since it doesn't move fast enough to control range and almost everything will be medium, long, or minimum (which it still can't control even with quirks)The Marauder doesn't rely on its quirks, but becomes significantly better when they're in play. In the rare instances where a MAD 4X is on the field, quirks make it go from +10 to +4 heat when firing both blazers on a run. You can even alpha strike without risking shutdown.
>>98376082I dislike this one on the basis that it is 24 slots and that doesn't match up nicely with attacks>>98367587Personally what I did was buy mini dice (5mm) and these https://www.amazon.com/Jewelry-Organizer-Adjustable-Removable-Containers/dp/B075F1FL47That way you get 4 maracas with 10 slots each and which are roughly beer-can sized. The worst case scenario is an LB 20-X where all pellets hit, which is 20. So 2 maracas will fully solve the attack. You can give the other 2 maracas to the other team so you don't have to share. You roll normally on the table for whatever cluster attack you're doing (2 pairs, one for to-hit and one to determine cluster size). If you get a hit, you check the cluster size and this will determine how many grids in the maracas you will use. For example, imagine you hit all 20 pellets on n LB 20-X. Well, all those pellets are in clusters of 1, so all 20 grids are used. Each grid tells you 3 things: white dice say hit location. If it happens to be a possible crit, black dice tell you if it's an actual crit. If the crit went through, the red dice tell you where to check on the crit table (I take first 1d6 to be the closest to the top left corner). If you're doing something simpler like an LRM-20 and you get 20 hits, well that's only 4 grids to pay attention to because the attack clusters in 5's. If you hit a crit on Roll Again, you could use the dice on dead grids to see which one actually hits something.I plan on adding black adhesive foam to mine to make it quieter, but I haven't done it yet.
>>98376129(By "grid" I mean "cell". I'm sleepy)
>>98375647>Specifically sex androids?Yes actually.
>>98376129Holy Toyama 120 dice for LBX20 then?
>>98376159That's rightYou can downgrade it to 1 pair per cell, which would only require 40 dice...but it'll be a pain in the ass big enough to make you question why you even bothered (seeing as you'd have to write down all hit locations before shaking the thing again to check for crits)
>>98376163I mean I just went with two pairs per cell, and then just roll crit checks and locations as they come up with a regular pair of d6s.
>>98376163The good news is they sell those little shits in bulk for cheap.I got these but you can probably go even cheaper on AliExpress or something, they're the samehttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G4BLGRXMFair warning, some number of them will have defects, but since that pack is 500 and it's 100 per color, you're going to get the ones you need>>98376166Sure that works too, I just don't like switching back and forth on that. >>98376562The omnipod system and construction rules are extremely flexible; the reason you may have an impression like that is that under standard rules the Clans field entire variant load-outs identical to Inner Sphere chassis variants; with the added note that the logistics of changing the Omni from one letter loadout to another is massively simplified by the omnipods.Under advanced construction and refit rules, Omnis are a tweaker's dream with the entire pod space open for customization, mixing and matching in very short order. It's also expensive as fuck as all the equipment has a cost multiplier to be made pod-compatible.The best analogy for omnipods and pod space is it's literally like a desktop PC case: All the brackets and holes are available in the mech to wire whatever plugs you need into whatever gear you're asking for. Everything slots and screws in to standardized mountings to the point that you can literally take everything out, clean/repair/replace everything and slap it back together and start it back up.You can think of working on regular battlemechs as being more like a car mechanic. Parts are specialized and aftermarket bits and bobbles need to have brackets riveted in or welded on to fit where they go; if it doesn't fit one way, your Mechtech swears up a storm and figures out how to slot it in sideways and a couple days to a week later he's got it figured.

>>98376653I'd probably compare omnipods to a fighter jet vs a tank. An Abrams can't swap its gun in any meaningful timeframe and even swapping a .50 to a 7.62 mg would be fairly annoying, but an F-15 can be kitted out for air superiority with AMRAAMs, land, get fitted with a bunch of gbus and some sidewinders, land, and be kitted out with anti-radiation missiles for wild weasel missions. The way I view omnimech variants is that they're the most common loadouts, but literally nothing stops you from slapping some LRM 20s in the torso if there's room or a battery of medium pulse lasers in the arm, it's just not one of the standard loadouts.Mechanically however omnimechs always felt pointless because the ease of swapping pods isn't really represented in games. Maybe use a houserule that one omnimech can swap loadouts before a battle as long as it stays under the point limit so you could turn your brawler into a sniper or missile boat when you realize that the enemy can outrange and kite your biggest mech.

>>98376969Supposedly it's a function of the full head ejection system requiring advanced aero movement calculations that also happen to be useful for calculating the movement of other flying things, but they never explain why this doesn't apply to every other unit with a full head ejection system.
>>98377439Original TRO says it has nothing to do with the ejection system but the battle computer they installed. There is no explanation why they choose this particular system I can find though seems to be a quite common system getting used on the Barghest, Bushwacker and Nightsky. Advanced anti-aero targeting doesn't seem to be an inherent trait of the system but more down to how they mounted it on the chassis. Maybe someone felt that the Hatchetman could try and jump at aircraft and swat them out the sky, who knows?
>>98377214>Mechanically however omnimechs always felt pointless because the ease of swapping pods isn't really represented in games. It's mostly a campaign thing; Omnipods take maybe hours for refits that could be days or weeks on a regular Battlemech.

Quirks are a mess but there's absolutely no reason a canon anti-air mech should entirely suck dick at anti-air forever just because no one had the foresight to make it an actual part in construction. You're supposed to give it as a freebie because it literally cannot do its job otherwise.
>>98377558Despite the name, the Hathetman's main weapon is actually the autocannon, which does get flak ammo and is commonly used in AA mechs like the Rifleman and Jaegermech.
