How do you mark your objectives on the table?
>>
>>98398487
Depends on the objective. A buddy of mine prints out buildings and the like for holding bunkers/HQs, but I personally enjoy doing convoy escorts with like ammo trucks and Mobile HQs, being mostly "get from point A to B with [X]% of the convoy intact". Works great for Alpha Strike, and so far it's holding up in classic.

Dougram continues to be pretty good! After the desert mercenary arc it gets better and a lot more consistent.
It's fun seeing the inspiration for the wolverine show up too.
Also the designs for the Fang of the Sun team just get funnier as the series goes on and becomes even more grounded and 'political' and then you have these bumpkins in their farm suspenders and ripped shorts saving the day.
Are there any more explicit references to Dougram in BT besides the obvious unseen designs? Like a 'Fang of the Sun' mercenary unit or something?

Second question to stay more on topic: Are there any other premier energy weapon boat assault mechs besides the Night Star and Awesome? Preferably pre clan invasion.
Thanks!

>Are there any more explicit references to Dougram in BT besides the obvious unseen designs?
No. The series wasn't available subbed back then and the kits were sold under the "Robotech" brand.
>>
>>98398627
Not sure why you think the Nightstar is an energy boat when it is a gauss carrier? Based on your recommendations I assume Clan mechs are off the table.
That leaves the following available:

Annihilator ANH-1E
Banshee BNC-3M
BattleMaster BLR-1Gb - good luck finding those outside of the 21st Centauri Lancers
Marauder II MAD-4A

Not sure how fare you are willing to stretch this definition of energy boat as there are some like the Zeus with mostly energy weapons but aren't 100% energy boats.

We've never got any info on the Belters military? They've apparently got a very good military and are causing problems for the IlKhan within the asteroid belt. Would be neat to know about 'em

The less Battletech talks about the Belters, the better. They're nothing but Mike Miller's self insert Mary Sue faction.
>>

Shaddap

>>98398764
They've powerful militias and a good deal of aerospace assets, however most Belter colonies are self-contained and individualistic, with only a very loose ruling government that only really exists to deal with outside parties when the Belters have to talk to someone beyond the Belt.
Therefore, you could easily paint your Belters up in any colours you want due to this lack of unity.
>>

They're in space, so they don't matter.

I feel like it would have been less successful as more defenders would try to game it. When they don't speak jive, the clanners can default to dropping a bid down Star on their command Company and just blow stuff up until they surrender. And if they lose, they'll just come back with their next lowest bid and try again tomorrow. When they respond to the batchal, then they have to actually abide by the terms which their enemy might have rigged and probably won't abide by themselves.

>>

Make it 75 tons, keep the 4/6/4 movement profile. Standard engine, max ferro fibrous, endo steel structure. You can fit two streak LRM 20s with 6 tons of ammo (18 shots per launcher) with CASE II in the arms, and 4 ER small lasers in the torsos. Light active probe in the CT to soak up the last half ton. 2,523 BV, this thing is just going to sling a billion 5-point hits at mechs.

Would also want to see a variant that does double HAGs or something like quad ATM 9s or something goofy like that.
>>
>>98400674
Still counts as stealth if nobody lives long enough to raise an alarm.
>>
>>98400766

>>
>>98400731

This answer is wrong though. The right way is to keep it's tonnage identical, maximize weight saving tech, direct convert the SHS to DHS, and plow *all* of the tonnage available into one of the following:
>As many LRM-15s as possible to make the box launchers comically large, 4x medium lasers (ish), and still only 2 tons of LRM-15 ammo
>2x LRM-15, 4x cERLLs, and not a single additional heat sink.

If it was an older IIC, sure. But in the Ilclan, we must also consider
>disregard original loadout entirely, fill all slots with plasma cannons and one or two ton of ammo
>the same but with heavy medium lasers
>>
>>98400848
>>98400845
There aren't that many heavy class Clan missile boats compared to CERPPC boats. More importantly, CERPPC boats make the game shit and boring, and LRM boats generally don't until they get to truly meme levels of LRM spam. It's like you don't even play the game.
>>
I want a Yeoman IIC with partial wing and talons.

>2x LRM-15, 4x cERLLs, and not a single additional heat sink.
This is fucking amazing. Do it faggot.
>>
>>98400784
A good IIC would also consider stacking as many LRM5 launchers as comically possible because worrying about crits is for IS barbarians.
>>
What about a Cat IIC that reduces the weight like the Shad and Griffin? Bring it down to a medium, keep roughly the same firepower but with more mobility for shoot 'n' scoot tactics. I guess it doesn't really fit with the Clans' typical way of fighting, though. Maybe it's a fire support unit for counter-insurgency ops against organized resistance on occupied worlds who've already shown no interest in the Clans' "honor" so they have no reason to hold back.

As Rebecca Buck in her Crusader stands still atop an elevation hill 2 to better aim her LRMs, Igzael Antwerp-Jones attempts a charge on her from behind! If he succeeds, she'll be knocked off and take 2 levels worth of falling damage. Cost: 7,962,400 C-bills Weight: 60 tons BV: 2,129

Dropped by 5 tons, standard engine kept, using Streak LRM 15s to maximise the damage output and ammunition efficiency of its missiles, and its secondary lasers being a couple of improved heavy medium lasers and a micro pulse laser in order to threaten anything that gets close, be it annoying battle armours, lighter mechs or infantry. Happens to any collaborative writing setting. Everyone comes in with a different angle and before you know it, you have employed writers insisting a battlemech couldn't crouch.

The basic rules are just that, basic. For most actions, the only decision to make is whether you will take the action or not. How you take the action isn't a factor, which is how they keep the complexity down so they can fit the rules in a thin spine paperback in a box set.

I think the only real problem with 1v1s is that there's no reason for either combatant to not try to get right up the other one's ass. Which is an important part of the game, but when your target has friends behind them, you have to consider where they can get to if you go back there.
>>
>>98405065
Make it Solaris style.
>>
>>98405073
how's that?
>>
>>98405073
Speaking of, had to disappointingly dip out early of my groups Urby Derby.
Right Arm of the ZANKANTOU took an AC/10, and one of the crits took out the Hand Actuator, preventing me from even Bonking in Retaliation...
Honestly though, 3'x3' is a bit too big when your only converting a hex to a single inch.
>>
>>98404974
If completely 100% brand new I prefer 1v1. Gives them less to worry about and not having to manage unit tactics at all, instead focusing on movement, weapon ranges and damage types, and heat management.

Also >>98405039

Actually painted up a lance of four chameleons as training mechs, 2 red scheme, 2 blue scheme. Unironically a good training mech for games because it can jump (so players learn more about mobility, walking, running, and jumping) and it's kinda shit at heat management so players have to manage their heat and can't alpha strike constantly.
>>
With all the advanced rules and shit, you still can't actually overheat and explode if you don't have ammo boxes in your mech, right? Videogames just made that up?

And on that note—who actually uses those advanced heat rules? I noticed 30 doesn't mean you autoshutdown anymore
>>
>>98405277
Nothing explodes without explosive components, but you can take crits from truly excessive heat which could be engine, gyro, or cockpit hits.
>>
>>98405296
ooh didn't notice System failure meant Crits, I see
>>
>>98405296

This might be a silly question, but since Gauss Cannons explode in the same manner as ammo when shot, are they vulnerable to heat-related ammo explosion rules as well?

We ended up playing two games, the first game was shit show with the hovercraft failing a pilot check, falling 2 levels into water sinking with all hands and a madcat getting head capped by the first heavy gauss rifle. She second game went better for him, he swapped his hover tank and BA for a VTOL and VTOLs in general dominated the second game. The TZ got hevy medium lasers to the back and the star adder fell in its heavy gauss and exploded.
>>
>>98405602
Most mid tier sci fi will feel like that compared to real good literature. Not a Battletech thing, it's just that the vast majority of stuff is mediocre, and if you stick to stuff that became renowned over time, you'll get overall higher quality than average.

My ideal teaching game for newbies us Griffin and Wolverine vs Shadow Hawk and Hunchback. It teaches the four basic battlefield roles of Sniper, Skirmisher, Brawler, and Juggernaut. It makes sure each player has at least one of each weapon type. It introduces players to the 55 ton trio and one other iconic medium. And it has the drama of heads and limbs being blasted off by the AC20.
>>
>>98405749
But is it just killing each other or do you actually give them an objective
>>
>>98405776
I tell them to control the center of the map, but in practice the game is generally decided when one mech is destroyed.

I am increasingly unsure giving newbies a SDH-2H is a good idea because it's such such a sad 'Mech. Come heat phase they notice they're at 0 heat after an alpha strike which is confusing to them. I then have to explain that it's an overcooled design which is kind of a bad thing because instead of being so cooled you could do more damage or be more protected. I can hear them in their heads going "so why'd you give me a bad mech" without actually saying it
>>
>>98405806
I often make the Shad a 3/4 while the others are 4/5s, because that introduces the concept of veteran pilots.
>>
>>98405808
I guess that's one way of doing it... I usually make the Wolverine pilot be the veteran "lance commander", seeing as the Wolverine has the command console in-lore. But that doesn't actually matter in-game unless you're playing with optional rules
>>
>>98405806
Here's what you do: put in in a scenario in space or in a volcano or something along with a bunch of undersinked ones to teach them about environmental heat.

>>
>>98405693

>>
>>98405816
Yeah, the point of an intro game is to introduce players to the game and maybe setting. So when presenting them with options I'll mention that the Shadow Hawk is a bit of a Master of None with no specific role, but that it has a veteran pilot.

I usually do a quick overview. "This Griffin is a mobile sniper, vulnerable at short range. The Wolverine wants to get in close and hammer the target with short range missiles and lasers. The Hunchback is slow but tough and has a devastating short range cannon"

>>98405820
Not something I'd do until they have four or five games under their belt.
>>
>>98405602
I liked most of the Voices of the Sphere ones. I thought the writer did a good job of conveying a lot of different personalities. And that one that was a spinoff from the computer game wasn't bad, either, in terms of the writing style. Like, I'm not gonna say it's Great Literature, but it felt a lot more... I dunno, atmospheric than a lot of BattleTech stuff.
>>
>>98405831
Do you give them the regular Wolverine or the Marik Wolverine?
>>98405749
Do you make the Griffin/Wolverine side play without veterans? Checked BV's and with the setup you mentioned you'd have
>Team SHawk Vet + Hunchie
2445 BV
>Team Wolverine Vet + Griffin
2725 BV
>Team Wolverine + Griffin Vet
2780
>Team Wolverine + Griffin
2373
Or do you just embrace the BV difference by playing the side with less BV?
>>
>>98405869
Regular Wolverine, the large laser one I leave for them to discover.

I embrace the BV variation. The goal is teaching, not balance. If I'm teaching one person I take the Shadow Hawk team and run it as a 4/5. If I'm teaching two I accept that the swinginess of the game makes BV differences minor.

>>
>>98405506
Because the way myomer works was made up after the fact to explain why giant robots would be practical but the anime designs they used at the beginning had different fluff written for them originally (Macross has alien tech with limited anti-gravity, Dougram... I dunno, I think the planet Delahoya has less gravity than Earth, maybe) and the newer designs were made to be roughly consistent with the 80s mech aesthetic.
>>
>>98405806
I think it's a good tutorial mech because it has pretty much everything; AC, laser, LRM, SRM, jump; I would remove 2 heat sinks and install a MG and a flamer so you can cover everything with one mech. The tutorial itself should be focused on 'using all the basic fuctions' not deathmatch though
>>

Deloyer is they use mechs because Gundam had just happened and mechs were hot. And well, the creator hadn't invented VOTOMs yet, and if he had, they probably would have had something more like that because he thought mechs were maybe a bit silly for counter insurgency. Also something something X Nebula effect screwing with advanced tech combat at close range only so no artillery, orbital bombardment or planes ruining everything.

Imagining the Deloyer 7 each with their own VOTOMs style heavy power armour to take on the federation instead of a single Dougram mech and some small arms could make for an interesting alternate take. Essentially everyone gets a fancy Clan tier Elemental suit with a shitload of plot armour whilst the feds play catch-up from old power armour and IS tier battle armours backing up light tanks and such.

I guess it's paying for convenience over say, set blocks of fdm printed layer tiles, and not dealing with 3d trees, but it's also losing some of that by amount of set-up required every time.

I've seen people already bring existing sets to games and just not bother because they didn't pick map-sheets ahead of time so instead of spending all the time required to layer up and clip together the bits to match the sheet, they just got on with playing instead of 15-30 minutes just building the map out. I've got some old maps (FASA era) with so much verticality on them it'd take so many sets of this shit it'd be insane, I'd be better off vandalising the maps and turning them into solid boards with each tile cut out and stuck on top of an appropriate amount of layers of something solid to make it more readable than spending hundreds and hundreds to get the ability to stack up to +7 and higher with this.

These look super nice but I have found that 3D terrain works much better if you scale the hexes up so that the mechs have extra room where they don't bump into hills nearby. Look at the light woods in 0207 on that desert map; if you try to park something in those woods you have a hill on 3 sides of the hex, and if any of your mech's feet or guns are sticking out over those hex sides, you are going to have to move the hills or move the mech. Even worse if you're trying to camp *on* a hill, like on 2402, since it is very likely the back half of the mech hangs off the edge and risks falling off of the hill if you so much as nudge the table.

I have a friend who is very into the Celestial mech designs but we know basically nothing about the fluff other than they're used by religious fanatics to some guy. What would a player need to know to field those in a match? I seem to recall something about cybernetic augs or something? Do they have any special gameplay rules like old clans did?
>>
>>98408711
The Celestials all have small cockpits because they're meant to be used by elite cybernetic zealots whose implants can offset the small cockpit penalty. There are rules for cybernetic mechwarriors in Interstellar Operations: Alternate Eras, but you can also just say they've got what they need and disregard the penalty. They deploy in groups of 6 called a Level II rather than Lances or Stars. It's possible some of the regular rank and file Blakists could have a celestial or two, but a full unit of them is only going to show up with the elite, cyborg Manei Domini.

Paul taught the Fremen basically self-hypnotic combat magic; which combined with already being accomplished duelists and guerillas turned effective raiders and partisans into fucking jedi.

Space Marines are indoctrinated and implanted with mass produced organs and implants to make any number of them (that survive training and surgery) into superhuman demigods

Spartans also started early for similar reasons, the medical procedures were impossible to perform in adults until decades after the first Spartan IIs were made (the existence of Spartan Is demonstrate the problems posed with the technology and why the change in approach).

Clanners were born into a warrior society that selected for them eugenically to fight in giant warsuits and Inner sphere nobility take up the responsibility from a young age as its expected of them in the same way princelings and squires begin training early to meet the expectations of their station.

The only genuine losers that fall into cockpits are plucky novel protagonists and mercenaries, both of which learn via the 'baptism by fire' method where they learn to mechwarrior or they hose them out of the cockpit. Once that "introductory lesson" is complete there's generally time to fill in the gaps.

The Fremen and Saudukar thing has more nuance to it than you are stating. The Saudukar at the time of Paul Atreides at described in universe as a degraded force. They lived in palatial barracks and lived better than everyone short of full royalty. They had gotten used to fighting with the full authority of the Emperor behind them and functioning as a special police unit more than soldiers.

It was a fairly realistic portrayal of what has happened to many elite military groups over the course of history. Look at the operational abilities of the Navy Seals now that they have had three entire generations, top to bottom, that are used to fighting enemies with nothing more advanced than man portable equipment and having constant air support. Their entire decision making process and command structure has warped.

Also the Fremen are both prescient from Spice use and have an actual, living deity as their leader.

Had a funny idea for a BattleTech show recently. A big budget action series with huge, devastating, bloody battles every episode... but it's interspersed with two nerds playing on the tabletop. It'd be a neat justification for the events of the show not needing to match up with the games' overall plot line and being able to focus on the visual spectacle of the combat rather than an overarching storyline for the show itself. The battles themselves continually escalate from playing with two mechs on a paper map sheet to big combined arms affairs as the two protagonists get more into the hobby and maybe bring in more friends.

sparta was essentially a joke army before that, only capable of waging short campaigns close to home

when the pelopenessian war rolled around, they had diluted their original hyper-warrior ethos and had enlarged their fleet
the final defeat of athens came from the sea and through a naval blockade that threatend to starve out the city
so the only way warriors can overcome sailors is to become part-sailor themselves

The spartans also beat Pyrrhus, though that's more martial v martial isn't it?
As an aside the timeline of classical antiquity is wild. Learning King Tut was pre-bronze age collapse was crazy to me, but then in the classical era everything happens one right after another. The peloponnesian war happens, not that long after Philip and Alexander take the stage, then the wars of the diodachi, and then the punic wars kick off. There are centuries where nothing happens, and there are centuries where everything happens

Macedonians were hardly a warrior race until Alexander had led them across Asia and a huge portion of their male population had over a decade of combat experience. Really the success of Thebes and Macedon illustrate that being a warrior race is a meme. Spartans lost to Thebans using the complex tactic of put more of your dudes on one flank and Dpartans were reduced to the equivalent of an Amish village people travel to to gawk at the weirdos living there.

Also Rome wasn't particularly militarized, the early republic lacked a standing army and the soldiery were all militias with the upper echelons being landowning farmers in their free time. Granted the Romans were more militarized than the Carthaginians who relied primarily on mercenaries until the Third Punic War by which time Carthage was less a country than a singular city state.

Really the path of history tends to be
Slightly militarized society>highly militarized>non-militarized society

During the Italian wars the French gendarmes kicked the shit out of Italian mercs constantly but were repeatedly assraped by Tercios who were just a professional army, not a warrior class like the French aristocracy.

This doesn’t sound right at all, I played a game against Princess recently that had her targeting crippled light mechs to a fault and I always arrange from highest to lowest tonnage. She practically ignored my assault mechs because once the light got legged or knocked down the assaults would have higher TMM and she would go for the easy kill instead of taking out a higher-value mech. If she worked the way you say she should’ve been focusing my bigger units down first.

That's good to hear, it's just funny that it keeps happening though. Very very rarely do I feel like I get to use a mech I've been wanting to try out and it works. Feels like princess knows what I want and targets them first and the dice gods always roll an instant headshot for them as well. Last game I played I wanted to use a Yaegermech 5D iirc and the thing got shot in the head, didn't get it's head destroyed, but it still killed the pilot lmao

I think one of the few mechs I've tried out and it didn't go poorly for me on the first or second game has been the Lament, where it only got critically damaged but still pulled through. No shocker there though, the Lament is an absolute beast of a mech and works so amazingly well it's hard for it to struggle in almost any situation

(depending on the era) This is what the MRB/MRBC is for; regulating shitty employers not just shitty mercs. And also this is why your admin team is the most important hire, even beyond quality warriors and techs.

Bring this to the MRBC and am fairly sure legally, our asses will be safe. They'll probably cover the mercs for any... expenses extracted in the heat of the moment. For instance taking all the salvage at the very least whilst restraining the troops from engaging in any hostile reprisal actions against the employer, for them being engaged in a duplicitous contract from an employer that essentially tricked them into working for free. The logs right there that they admitted to it that they couldn't pay.

The MRBC has been dealing with shitty employers like this for a very long time and knows how to manage the fallout, turning a shitshow into a publicity win where some valiant and noble mercenaries saved the day rather than angrily started looting their defenceless contractors exactly as the bandits they were hired to protect them from would have.

The employer couldn't afford to deal with pirates with one mech.

Katie, at this point, has five, plus a wrecked but salvageable Kodiak. There's no way the city can stop her from doing whatever she wants, including >>98413538. If she were more ruthless, she'd start threatening to level city-owned buildings until they paid up.

This mostly shows how unsuited Katie is to the mercenary life, which was a theme that Outfoxed picked up and explored more thoroughly.

>>98413538
>>98413592
This story is set in the late Dark Age, so the MRBC is not around, and it's before the Foxes got into the bonding business.

>The Fox Patrol formed through a merger. Boyfriends and debt-ridden mercenaries Evan Huxley and Arkee Colorado joined up with independent Jerangle-based MechWarrior and technician Katie Ferraro, placing her in charge of both the unit and its repairs.
I hate that I had to look this up.
>>
>>98413452
This incident actually inspired the characterization for one of my mercs, who I'm writing as a foil to Katie. Her establishing character moment is when a government tries to pull this, and she orders one of her mercs to fire a PPC shot just over the palace's roof, then aim a bit down, and tells the rep to go talk to the bank, because "If they don't give you a loan to pay up, I'll come for them next."
>>
>>98413912
>This story is set in the late Dark Age, so the MRBC is not around, and it's before the Foxes got into the bonding business.
Sea Fox isn't the MRBC but the MBA/Mercenary Bonding Authority. The Mercenary Review and Bonding Commission is what the Mercenary Review Board became after Comstar relinquished control over it. If it is post-Grey Monday Dark Ages, then the MRBC dissolved again in 3132 and reformed in 3133 under an extremely pro-Employer board, causing the rise of the Second Mercenary Guild in 3145 and the later Clan Sea Fox MBA.

>>
>>98414112
You need at least a decent sized corporation to produce that much money, or a noble estate with a significant amount of tax revenue.
>>
>>98414112
It really depends on when you are, and you need to have connections. The "Mechwarrior Houses" have ample connections because they're in and out of the military constantly and are guaranteed to have a strong in with the local militia (assuming they aren't bankrolling it entirely themselves in the first place). When one of their scions wants to run off to form a mercenary company, they can pull in retired military guys and existing mercenaries looking for work/someone to maintain their mech, and they know who around them might be willing to let go of some functional mechs for a price.
Some random CEO with no martial connections whatsoever is going to have a harder time of it. In some eras there might be an open market where mechs are available to the highest bidder and they can get in that way, but that's dropping tens of millions of C-bill equivalent cash per unit at least and they have to try and find reliable pilots who won't just run off with the mech at the first opportunity. One C-bill is like $20 now with all the irl inflation, so even a cheap mech is pushing dozens of millions of dollars and a decent heavy is easily hundreds of millions if you had to buy it at full retail.

Battletech's population outnumbers us by about 800:1 to 1000:1. You'd be needing to have the equivalent of Billionaires or several high end millionaires with significant liquid assets to start up even a cheap a Merc Company with 'Mechs. There's currently about 3400 billionaires IRL, so that'd be about 2.7-3.4 Million people with enough raw assets.
In terms of overall importance, you're looking closer to the end of where Millionaires are at today. There's a lot of them at 60 million and they have a fair bit of weight to throw around, but they aren't too close to the highest echelons of power.

Yeah the idea was maybe Second Succession War some CEO or company VP type has more money than sense and has a mid life crisis and decides "I always wanted to be a mech warrior leading a military unit, I should form my own band of mercs." I imagine setting it up would be the hard part, probably getting some veterans and paying them obscene salaries and offering them better mechs to help him set stuff up and find pilots, maybe have a hissy fit when the vets start getting more credit than the balding 45 year old whose a green mech pilot in an Atlas he bought from some poor sap with dozens of creditors after him and no money.

Could possibly be from a mech making company to justify having easier access to the source. "Hey can I buy like 20 new mechs at three times markup because we're best buds?"

it just comes down to raw math
a really good warrior is 2x, maybe 3x, times as good as a a weekend warrior in equivalent gear
but force increases exponentially with number
doubling your army quadruples their effective combat effectiveness, tripling it will increase it 9 times
its obvious that if a nation can increase their army size, it will drastically become more powerful than simply increasing individual soldier quality

gear can have an outsized effect, armored knights on horseback are known break formations of footmen 5 times their size
but both gear and numbers are both tied back to a single factor: manpower and material to fund a a large army and to build things to equip them
this makes it much clearer as to why warriors dont dominate the battlespace nearly as much
individual training and soldier quality becomes less and less of a factor compared to army size and overall army equipment, both of which are largely determined by how rich a nation is

and the longer a war drags on, the less advantage your trained-since-birth warriors will become as the training and skill levels of both sides equalize
the weekend warriors will slowly build up a core of veterans and institutional knowledge from bitter experience, if nothing else
whereas constant losses means that you will run out of actual warriors and replace them with shopkeepers and tailors on the other side anyways

>>

I would think so, the inner sphere standard is itself a collection of knockoffs that officially are unrelated despite all functioning exactly the same and most of them coming out on a timescale consistent with corporate espionage and reverse engineering. Battle Armor is one of those things the IS is actually good at.

You can just deploy a platoon of 12 instead of a squad of 4. They have to be broken down into smaller units due to the difficulties of transporting more than a handful of them together. They're heavy.

Yeah. Though I end up fielding platoons of 16 so that I can have one squad per mech in a lance.
>>
>>98415862
It is weird that that isn't already a standard thing for the IS. Clans have Novas and Blakists have Choirs, but the IS doesn't have anything standard. And looking it up, some factions do actually have 16 man platoons, but the dracs have 12 and the FWL goes for 20. I guess they both have weird hiccups with their organization where the dracs firmly insisted that battle armor should only be Infantry+ and are therefore unconcerned with how they interact with mechs and the FWL only intends to have reliable access to one omnimech that isn't a good delivery vector for BA anyway.

>There was actually a plan to fully canonize all the different looks various mechs have had over the years as variants from competing defense contractors and factions
this is, more or less, what happened with the M4 sherman

the curvier M4A1s, the boxier M4A3s, and M4A2s made by welding the cast and welded hulls together, were all in service at once because each company was limited by the number of welders or casting facilities they had on hand
so the pressed car company kept producing M4A1s long after every other factory switched to M4A3s because they still had large casting facilities for pumping them out

Someone explain to me what's the point of a Bearhunter over a generic HMG again?

>If you don't know just say so. There is no need to be rude about it.
Fuck you and kill yourself newfag. We're going to be rude to whomever we fucking well please, because we can and because no one can stop us. You aren't special. You're just another dumb cunt who wandered in here because a Youtube tranny told you Battletech was trending and you wanted to get on board the popular thing, or else you're a CGL plant. Well fuck you. We don't want you, and we don't want anyone else here. This is our space, and fuck you for trying to infiltrate it. This isn't the fucking official forums, and it's not R*ddit. If you think we're here to help you, you're wrong, and you should kill yourself and your family.

It used to have better burst fire rules vs BA back when Ghost Targets were a thing, I think.

You may want to consider that this place has a population that is so relentlessly toxic that they've driven away almost everyone who made actual content. Go back to a 2014 thread in the archive sometime. Yes, I'm almost sure that fag is a) for real, and b) Australian.
>>
>>98415818
>>98415840
My understanding is that it's a 2D6 problem. Some of the probability systems used by the game would break down if there were more than six units in a BA formation.

If you're playing advanced scouting get something like a karnov, load it with infantry squads, put scout skills (tracking, sensor ops, etc.,) and use it to scout the StratCon map
>>
>>98416462
That's why BT should move to the D&D d20 system. If it's good enough for the best RPG system in the world, it's good enough for Battletech.
>>
>>98416514
d20 is for babbys, 2d12 is where heroes come to die in glory

It's Contrarian Anon. Who is also Nulnfag. So of course they're Australian. Even worse they are some outback sheep fucker hiding in a cave because he's scared of being batchall'd and playing real Battletech
>>
>>98413226
It really depends. In the end it's all personal preference, and partially how you've set up your game's finances.
If you just want to muck about and have fun sure try anything and everything.

Personally I don't like how it overfills my personnel roster, and makes spending exp more of a hassle. But in the end it's all about how you want to play.

You can be as restrictive or unrestrictive as you like. I like to play within the confines of what fits within my dropship, which is limited by bays but also by space for personnel and cargo.

The most current megamek version now has temp crew for vehicles, infantry, and large vessels that work like temp astechs as well as options that allow you to only count the commander of the unit for SPAs. In practice, however, I've found it skews injuries towards the only PC crew member so you'll have a higher unit CO turnover rate than normal
>>
>>98415818
Battle armor has platoons for larger formations and nothing stops you from stacking two lances into a hex for example. Pragmatically however it's overkill to do it that way, mechs can't carry 8 BA and it's generally overkill for the purposes you want to use battle armor for.

those people can fuck off to r*ddit with the rest of the tranny faggots

Exactly. Only official Catalyst Game Labs Content TM should be played and discussed here.

I'm cooking up lances for a game between two friends. They've already tried BT at least once each, so it's not a total noob match, but they're still getting familiar with it

Kuritans
>BL-7-KNT, 3/4
>TBT-5N, 4/5
>CN9-A, 4/5
>JR7-D, 4/5

Davions
>LGB-8C, 3/4
>WHM-6D, 4/5
>HBK-4G, 4/5
>WSP-1A, 4/5

Dracs are only at a ~3% BV disadvantage and they have played more, so I don't think it's a big deal. I wanted to showcase some flavor for House units + some combos, like Trebuchet+Centurion bros and Longbow+Warhammer bros. What do you think?
>>
>>98416342
Ghost targets aren't a thing anymore?
>>
>>98417110
Admittedly I based the Drac lance around the Black Knight commander because my friend really fucked with it. Conversely, my FedSun friend really fucked with the Warhammer but only tried the stock -6R version

I played an 8v8 game last night on megamek and 4 hours went by in the blink of an eye. I didn't really mean to have such a large game but it sorta just happened while I was looking at wobby angel mechs and just adding them to my roster. I had two Devas and a Preta and they all performed pretty well. Also a Viper which is always an effective mech when I bring them out with the twin blazers. Amusingly, in the end my viper and and the better of my two Devas got headshotted and I was barely able to scrape out a victory. It's a boring mech but my best performer was the Rattlesnake II. While every other mech got exhausted or crippled, my Rattlesnake II ended the game with all of its armor intact and having been an absolute menace to the other team. I also had two fire starters that, while they did barely any damage, tanked a shit ton and managed to be a problem for most of the game. Never seen a light mech take so much abuse in the face of a late era banshee before, absolutely insane. Also had a madcat III get absolutely abused as well and at one point I was in shock it was still in the fight after having got ravaged turn after turn. Sometimes mechs you least expect become unkillable

Overall fun game and I learned that VSPs are super good and reliable. I spent most of the game thinking I was gonna lose though but somehow squeezed out a victory in the end. Thank you for reading my retarded blog post

> I like to play within the confines of what fits within my dropship
Yeah that sounds like they way to go but when the game generates your starting lance you get 12 mechs and some support staff but no dropship which is why I asked about it. They cost a lot to save up for and I wanted to know of they did anything other than look cool? Will it at least save me on transport costs?
>>98416487
A transport VTOL is something I have my eye out for but no luck so far. To clarify you are saying to put the recon skills on the the individual soldiers in the platoon not the VTOL crew?

If either of you know how hard is it to use conventional aircraft/aerospace fighters? For example if I buy a cheap mechbuster with an ok pilot will it generate value or get shot down quickly?

I'm sorry, she doesn't look Capellan enough for that.

>>98418268
>capellans have a look
honestly I'm amazed they haven't retconned overt racism in the lore like that
>>
>>98418656
Capellans getting plastic surgery to look more Han has been in the lore for decades. Xin Sheng somehow surpasses Drac weebery yet has less internal pushback.
>>
>>98416605
Except I like BT. Cuntrarian hates it.
And you're lying about everything. Again.
>>
>>98413505
This is the best answer. Second best is just pulling everyone back to the dropship and having a picnic until the government comes begging for you to help them.
>>
I want to submit a story to Shrapnel. Anyone else done that before?
>>
>>98418675
It's probably because Xin Sheng was also accompanied by generally positive reforms and an upturn in a lot of Capellans' standard of living.
It's actually not too dissimilar to how Weeb culture initially became entrenched in the Combine. When the capital got moved from New Samarkand to Luthien, the building project to construct Imperial City spurred a wave of Japanophilia while also kickstarting an economic boom due to all the industries that sprang up to supply the materials and labor for the project. This reinforced the Japanophilia until it became a dominant cultural force.
Further attempts to force weeb culture were more forced and done in times of economic or poltical turmoil and so were far less successful.
>>
>>98419421
No, but I've heard how it goes. Read all the rules, they're not going to make any exceptions for some random. If they want to make editorial changes, do it. Expect to be waiting more than a few months and then months further still even if they do accept your thing.
>>
Only simulated 1 turn today so that I could actually paint some minis too. Turn 15 is completed and with it, another pilot is eliminated. Out of the original 18 units(16 + 2NPC tanks), 8 units now remain. At least 1 unit has even emptied an ammo bin! The turns are going much quicker now as well. I don't think it will take too much longer to finish. Once it's done, there's going to be some lore to advance and that comes not just in the form of rolling for better stats, but possibly better mechs as well.
