Need some advice from a sweaty anon

I want to make a flavor army that's avian coded (going to paint them based on my parakeet and cockatiel) and right now I am looking at doing a Tzaangor Warflock with a LOC in charge.

I don't know the meta and frankly don't care, but I want my army to be as competent as possible without sacrificing flavor, and flavor requires lots of bird shit.

Would this be the best option?
Things to look out for?
Are there other more avian coded units from other factions that you can build with?

Any advice will be rewarded with a (You)

One of the earlier mawtribe tomes mentions some that fell to slaanesh, but to be fair that was before the resurgence of the great maw of course. I don't think the maw would have that much of a hold on them anyway, I mean not all ogres are really super into maw worship anyway. I think the more importabt factor is their natural (old-ones derived?) resistance, though it was never insurmountable of course.

Eh the iron golem breacher is captured and starved turning him half mad. He's not really there by choice.

>>
So is a battle on the tabletop supposed to represent like a critical slice of a battle (as in you're supposed to imagine a giant battle around the actual 2k game) or is it each model supposed to represent like 100× its usual size (e.g. your unit of 20 vanari wardens is actually 2000 of em)?

Avalenor's warform origins are unknown per his blurbs across all battletomes. Sevireth might have the same manifestation method as normal wind spirits, but the latest tome lore blurb for him makes him out to be an insane desert djinn. So it's unclear. Celennar is a full self-manifestation of the respective moon's spirit. But yeah, the normal Mountain spirits are absolutely constructs and the wind spirits are enabled via their mask and then manifest a body.

>Carve symbols into the armor, charge it with some Aethersea juice, and suddenly we have Aztec Death Whistle: The Army

Mesoamerican history autist here, "death whistles" didn't exist

There are real excavated whistles that are shaped like skulls, but there's no evidence I am aware of that they were used in battle to intimidate the enemy as the online rumormongering says, nor was there any research I am aware of that compared the sounds like they make to human screaming. As far as I know, both of those claims, which are basically the entire basis for "death whistles" being a thing, are nonsense. I have one potential lead which is that a friend of a friend of mine claims to know the guy who was in the original viral video that apparently led to them becoming infamous, and that friend-of-a-friend claims that the guy in the video was sharing legit info, so at some point I'll try to reach out, but I'm quite skeptical that there's any real historicity behind those claims: Zero academic sources I have seen describe whistle devices being used in battle and making screaming sounds

The only other caveats are that A: the Conquistador Bernal Diaz does claim that, in addition to conch trumpets, drums, yells etc that Aztec soldiers used in battles, they also whistled, but the wording seems to imply vocal whistles rather then whistle devices in those lines. In contrast during sacrifice ceremonies, he actually seems to refer to "whistles" as a noun, not just a verb; and B: There is one paper which mentions them allegedly sounding like screaming and being used in battle, but it's just referencing those online rumors. That paper compares the auditory properties of the whistles to other instruments and sounds, and it DID find a potential auditory similarity to human vocalizations, but it doesn't seem to specify "screaming" and there were closer matches to a few types of instruments

Bros help me out here, blanche's signature in the bottom right is definitely supposed to say IV right? Meaning this proto-prosecutor ("gryphonne lord") was created in 2014.
Being extremely generous and assuming this was drawn around the beginning of the year this gives us about a year and a half between stormie concept art and their full release, which is a lot quicker than their usual turnaround rate which we know from other concept art. And again, that's the most generous possible interpretation.
To make matters worse, the actual stormcast miniatures we got deviated significantly from blanche's concepts (a lot more than say kharadron overlords, which he also drew in 2014) so they must've gone through ANOTHER round of quite significant concept design before they started the sculpting process.
These guys were so fucking rushed. Is there any other information from interviews or whatever that could shed some light on the general timeline of whfb's ending and aos' creation? It does seem like kind of a rushjob in general.

This dude (apparently called a "celestial lord") appears to be from 2015 even (signature on the bottom left) but it's even more illegible, so I wouldn't stake any claims on it. Still, that'd mean a truly crazy timespan for stormcast.
Does anybody know where to find more high res pics of these guys? I don't suppose they ever appeared in a WD like the kharadron concepts?

Dwarf women look great when they have bigass braids and boobplates, like the hero there. When you stick them into hair covering helmets, they just look like beardless lads, especially in a kit that designed to be unisex.
>>
>>98667177
True. Beards are a huge part of what makes Dwarfs look interesting, like when you're painting dwarfs it's unironically more important to get the beard right than their faces. You can't just take that element away without replacing it with something and expect it to look right.

the mini gutplates are really weird

I think the poses are meant to make it easier to give them bearded faces as if they lean forward the beards can be sculpted hanging freely rather than having to roll over armor or float awkwardly a milliliter off of it

also, maybe it's nothing, but I get the impression they took a page off the old mark gibbons concept works for the emphasis on the way the back and shoulders are armoured and the helmet is almost turtled in; all in all they don't strike me as that brilliant, but either I'm grasping at gut feelings to make me like them or the featureless shoulderpads and backs are actually meant to evoke the silhouette of an anvil.

Based fellow Dwarf chad. I got into MESBG because of how charming I found the dwarven sculpts there to be. I agree that Votann are lame. I don't really love the new Khazalid Holds except for the Golems.

Feels like this should be made for me but it feels like a downgrade compared to Warhammer Fantasy dwarfs in terms of aesthetics/design.

Boolepost on the new dorfs:

Storyteller's back!
Haha, yay! I love them so much — even though they ditched the horns on their helmets, they're basically the Dwarf we all know and love!
Those Cannon we all like are also coming back in two even bigger and fancier forms!
Hero can be Male or female — like in this picture, he's Thrynn — and whether male or female, they can all sit on a massive War Throne, a land-going dragon-headed warship far bigger than you can imagine, carrying heroes far more intricate than Katakros
Ah, and the classic Runewright!
Don't forget these huge Gholems — these Orestone-powered creations are far more complex than you'd think. They can get completely different kits depending on whether they belong to Valaya or Gazul. We've heard that back in the Age of Myth, duardin lived alongside these gholemkind. By mining aether-veins, the two races built orestone together, which serves as the core of the gholems, providing animus and making them truly "alive." At the same time, the animus also strengthens the surrounding duardin, making them even more valiant in battle. As long as the orestone isn't destroyed, the gholems can be reborn again and again with the help of the duardin.
So in this day and age, Kharzalites will stop at nothing to recover orestone to help their kin be reborn — they're as close as kins!
Finally, Battlelines are split into Clanshield and Clangunner, and we guarantee you'll be blown away by the Clangunner!

Duardin got a new leader — High Kyng Valankrom!
As for Thorgrim? He's become one of the 8 Ancestor Gods, ruling over Azyr and holding the Great Book of Grudges for all duardin

I hope the "high kyng" spelling is a joke by boole because that's retarded even by gw's standards
>>
>>98669348

The only thing that can destroy Slaanesh.
>>
>>98669405
So to recap, the units as far as we know:
>Thrynn (hero, pictured)
>Rune golems (pictured, two build options)
>Clanshields (pictured, basic infantry)
>Clangunners (basic ranged infantry, could be a dual build of the clanshields)
>Thrynn on throne of power
>high kyng valankrom (named hero, presumably gets his own model)
>runewright hero
So that's 6 to 7 of the supposed 12 kits we're getting. Though there's also the fyreslayer hero with droth.

Feels like the spirit that powered the OBR and LRL releases is gone and we're back to treading old ground.

I feel like the AoS dwarfs don't do enough to separate themselves from wfb dwarfs though it might just be because there's not a great picture of them
>>
>>98669472
Dwarves were just a in a weird spot I think. Kharadron have some books but nothing of renowned. Fyreslayers have nothing but Gotrek who doesn't want anything to do with them. A narrative shakeup with more traditional dwarves that people already like makes sense.

>>
>>98669478
As >>98669479 said, Dwarves have been in a weird spot in AoS. The two main factions of Dwarves have gotten some spotlight, but not Dwarves as a whole. Dwarves in general haven't been very relevant since the Dispossesed got Squatted for CoS, and the Chorfs are off doing their own thing.
>>
>>98669478
Like >>98669475 said, since FS and KO there's been a full decade of people complaining they want "real dwarfs" instead, now it's time for those people to put their money where their mouth is (they won't).
That being said the golems are pretty distinct, and the throne of power thing sounds pretty out there so all hope is not yet lost. Could be a case of making the basic bitch infantry pretty ...well, basic, while the "non-battleline" stuff gets more out there. All things considered dawnriders and vanari wardens are pretty normal too, and look how the rest of the loomies turned out.

I've tried to put it into words why I really like Lumineth as a spiritual successor to High Elves but not these dwarfs

I feel Lumineth really feel like they fit into AoS much more, you hear that Lumineth live in the Realm of Light and then you see these pure white and silver armoured elves and one of the first hero models they showed off was Eltharion who is made of Light and it makes sense. Meanwhile these Dwarfs feel like they could live in any mountain in any setting

This just pisses me off. Not only is it fucking lazy, but it squanders an excellent opportunity to flesh out factions/species. Instead of getting fluff (and models based on that fluff) built around establishing and exploring the cultural, situational, and biological differences between groups, we get bullshit universalism that drags everything towards uninspired, homogeneous slop.

Who could have had a cool dwarf faction properly divided and themed around the Ancestor Gods, but instead we get this shit.

Coming home and getting a better look at the Dwarves, I like the hero they showed off a lot but I must again push my “AoS isn’t absurd and silly enough,” narrative. The old Ironbreakers models were a unit of dwarves clad in full plate, except for their beards, which their armor opened up at the face to let their beards flow out of. It’s very silly, but it’s also a marker of how proud Dwarves are of their beards, that they would introduce a pretty critical flaw to their armor as opposed to just cutting their beards. I suppose you could say these are more the Dwarf Warriors equivalent to explain their plainness, though the Dwarf Warriors have lore that they’re just dudes the Dwarven Hold basically drafts into the fight as opposed to being professional soldiers by trade. In that regard I think we will have to wait and see about the lore.

Brother, I'd be happy with an attempt. This is not an attempt, however. This is just another case of lazy-ass corporate box-checking.
Box-checking and creativity don't have to be mutually exclusive. You can still do interesting things that add flavour to factions while meeting arbitrary corporate "diversity" quotas.

>>98669683
>He says as he doesn't post any of his models.
I can go take a picture of some KO shit I have lying around if you want that too, if you'd like.
I know it might be a shocker, but trying to hold things you enjoy to a higher standard is a good thing. Some people would genuinely like to see GW stop being a lazy piece of shit and see the setting improve
>>
>>98669643
That would've been a more interesting way to include female dwarfs but by now it's obvious gw just doesn't want to do any gender exclusive units anymore unless they absolutely have to. See for example cathay where they're all mixed gender units despite having separate male and female units in the total war game (and accompanying lore explaining why).
I think that's totally fine for elves (little sexual dimorphism) or ogres and gargants (even if there is any dimorphism their females are going to be much, much stronger than the men of other races anyway), but for humans and dorfs you can do more interesting things than mixed gender units even if you do want to include female units. I don't really mind their inclusion but I do wish they'd be more creative with it. Like the abovementioned total war gender split for cathay had a pretty interesting background with gunpowder technology being invented (?) by the moon empress and is therefore asdociated with femininity in their society.
>>
>>98669643
Kharadrons & Fyreslayers will still exist alongside them. There's nothing to be upset about. Maybe they'll even make a book about how they interact.
>>
Never played AoS, but the models look great. Kind of looking at Soulblight Gravelords. The things that I really like are the skeletons and the vampires. Is skeleton horde with elite vampire units and a couple fell bats a viable force? If so, what leader likes that?

Also, as far as skeletons, should I focus on deathrattle or barrow? I get that the barrow guard are more elite, but is one more generally useful than the other?

The most optimal way is to have a vampire hero with skeleton hordes or zombie hordes (choose one) with some harassments unit like bats or wolves, so what your idea way to run is actually the ideal way to play too.
>>
>>98669725
I was under the impression that FS was getting folded into the new dwarf faction, which I hope is the case. Slayers are a facet of the wider dwarf culture and should never have been split into their own standalone entity.

>>98669716
>accompanying lore explaining why
Is there really? I have the same axe to grind with Cathay over in TOW since they break the established dynamic with humans in the setting (i.e. human women on the battlefield aren't really a thing unless they're using magic, blessed by a chaos god, or a vampire - bar special named characters, of course). I do like the idea you mentioned about gunpowder being linked to the empress, but I wish there was more to justify stuff like the jade warriors or the basic bitch peasants.
>I think that's totally fine for elves...ogres and gargant
Agreed. Elves basically live forever, so they have plenty of time to breed and master martial/magical arts. Ogres and giants, on the other hand, are both fuck-off huge and powerful, so even if sexual dimorphism exists between males and females within the species, it doesn't really matter because they'd still be stronger than most other species.
>I don't really mind their inclusion
I'd be fine with it too, if they weren't squandering golden opportunities.
>>
>>98669741
SBGL are the direct descendants of Vampire Counts which is the undead hordes lead by a vampire general army. I would either hunt down the previous Spearhead for that in a single box, or just get the current Spearhead and expand your collection by getting your Vampire General next (with the luxury of technically more choices)”
>>
>>98669782
They could very well be. I don't think they'll outright squat them just yet.
>>
>>98669782
I think the idea that FS are going to be souped with these new dwarfs is still the plan as far as we know yeah.
>cathay
It's been a while since I looked it up but I think the moon empress stuff I mentioned in my post is the explanation total war goes with for all-female units yeah. Tow seems to have ditched that for a more uniform mixed gender idea.
>>
if fyreslayers arent gone I wanna see the golems painted in a way that makes them cohesive with the magma droths.
>>
>>98669704
I do think they're intended to be more Dwarf warriors than Ironbreakers, their armor is not as heavy as it looks at first glance and it sounds like there's a gun toting range variant.

Whether or not they'll get a more elite infantry unit in the first wave is up for debate though. They might not. They have Fyreslayers anyway, for offensive infantry.
>>
>>98669741
Do not focus entirely on death rattle, they are strictly meant as a buffer and using them for combat is meaningless since the spears might as well be pool noodles. If you want to go whole hog on skeletons you'll want graveguard and black knights.

Also you probably want vampires, without casters the army implodes and skeletons while good aren't particularly good at being heavy hitters also they have no casting of spells .
>>
>>98669782
Fyreslayers are sticking around. They're getting at least one new (droth) hero to go with these new Dwarfs, even.
>>
>>98669992
There was some mention of valaya heavy infantry but that might just mean the golems.
>>
>>98669643
You’re correct of course, there’s far better ways to go about this than just jumbling everything together into one hodge podge, but as others have said it’s somewhat the standard at this point with the exception here and there.
>>98669725
This does lighten the mood though. As long as they’re not replacing anything, then it’s whatever and they can be ignored easily enough (not that I totally hate them so far but they don’t seem all that).
>>
>>98670052
At least it only seems like the Fyreslayers will be integrated into them. Which makes the most since already being based on a splinter group anyway.
>>
Apparently we're getting two cannons, though I assume that means two build options for the same kit.
Really curious to see what their artillery looks like. Also whether or not they have some type of movement unit. Chorfs have their centaurs, whfb dorfs have their gyrocopters (though even then their slow turtle playstyle lends them to being one of the most boring armies in the game to play and face). Will khazalids have something like that or will we have to rely on magmadroths?
>>
When is the dorf reveal? I assume it's close since the page is done already.

I wanted some dorfs and chorfs disappointed.

>>
>>98670112

They also just show pre-made stuff and talk about it after.

>>98670299

>>
>>98670299
What I'm confused about is why the AOS team is allowed to make dwarf dwarfs at all.
Wasn't there a big stink about TOW and AOS teams being separate and not allowed to use their ideas/designs? Or has there been a sudden policy shift and now it doesnt matter? Because these guys are just WFB Dwarfs with some golems added.
>>
>>98670300
Basically every vampire except Annika and Kritza (the long based cool vampires from cursed city era) can cast at least 1-2 spells.

Here's what I'd recommend for you:

>10-20 barrow guard
>10 Skeleton horseys
>1 Wight King
Mounted Wight King optional but he comes with the army box.
>20-40 deathrattles (really good point holders and tarpits)
If you don't go with deathrattles a reinforced block of wolves is annoying as fuck too, my local area calls it "wolf jail"

Then pick your leader vamp, I'd say it's a crapshoot between Mannfred or Radhukar the beast, personally I love Radhukar, dude can fucking murder anything on contact and people don't think he's as dangerous and hard to kill as he is because of his base size.
>>
>>98670309
See admech and mechanicum in 40k and 30k.
>>
>>98670309
> being separate and not allowed to use their ideas/designs?

they did separate now.

they ARE allowed to use the same design themes and armies, they are NOT allowed to use the same model kit products. so aos and ToW can both have their take on high elfs and include teclis and allarielle in their games, but they cant share the high elf swordmasters box product kit.

basically its spreadsheet nonsense so they can internally discriminate which models are actually contributing sales for which game. its incredibly stupid and self sabotaging but its what they decided. never forget, creatives are not in charge at GW, bean counting accountants and business majors who've never touched a model are.
>>
>>98670303
That's what I'm saying, like I understand not being happy because the generic dwarf faction popped out as generic dwarves but I feel like this is just what was gonna happen.

>>98670309
Because I think they realized Fireslayers by themselves do not function as well and they do not know how to continue with them so they have to slap them in with another faction THUS why not just recreate the old bit with regular dorfs and mohawk dorfs.

But also, AOS is entirely about taking shit from Fantasy and turning up the fantastical scale or honing onto a theme. Wood elves are now literally wood and elf ghosts, Goblins turned into crazy acid trip cave freaks, Human Cities went from steampunk to... Baroque... Da'vinci... Medieval painting.. stuff.
>>
>>98670329

>>
>>98670334

>>
>>98670334
It’s probably just a side effect of true scale nonsense. I don’t think all armies should be beholden to the true scale rule and dwarves are the biggest victims of it. The plate is supposed to be a belt and it just comes off as a gut plate, the female models can’t have hair braids poking out because it would fuck with the size of their heads. The weapons are too tame. I could go on.
>>
> My-my lord! Those short-things seem to have a new army, and they are war-waging against the bad short-things!
Yes-yes, I have already heard-heard. Those short-things use something called Grudge Marks to give themselves power

Sounds disgusting-disgusting!
The Eshin assassins say those short-things have a strange unit called Valayan Guardians

All of them are female, and they look similar to the one in this image
These defense-focused elite infantry have incredibly strong defensive ability, close-close to those bad short-things’ dominator engine. It is said they also have ward 4+
What is ward?
Don’t know-know. Maybe some terrible short-things weapon

At least I have never seen it on any other skaven
As for those short-things gunners, these gunner units of 10 carry something that looks a lot like laser rifles

Laser? What is that? Sounds like something human-things from another universe would use
These guns have power almost identical to warplock jezzails!
Also range18?
Correct-correct, and there are far-far more of them
How is that possible-possible?!

I-if the guns look anything like las guns I’m probably not gonna be into this army. As much as I like the vallya stuff on paper.
