== NIGHTMARE GROUPBUILD ==

Build a mecha encompassing different aspects of the horror genre. Examples include
>A mecha that incorporates general horror tropes from literature, film, and anime
>A corrupted version of an existing mecha/robot through magical, biological, or alien means (ie Symbiotes, parasites, Daemonic possession)
>Organic mecha (ie Evangelions) and monsters from /m/-related media (ie: the BETA from Muv-Luv)
>A mecha that draws inspiration from various demons or monsters from different mythologies and religions.

Submit your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com , include at least 5 finished pics and any WIP pics you took while working on your entry, as well as a brief description of your build.

START: 8/14/24
END: 10/31/24

Has anyone had any luck yet recasting or duplicating pieces by smooshing sprue goo into oyumaru molds?

Is it true that using regular tamiya plastic cement reduces the air bubbles when the goo cures compared to the usual advice where they tell you to dissolve sprues in tamiya extra thin cement?
>>

they were officially supposed to launch with the netflix show.
the people getting them early were just convincing teenage retail employees to break street date and give them stuff from the back that wasn't supposed to be on sale yet. same as when people get early copies of vidya

>the usual advice where they tell you to dissolve sprues in tamiya extra thin cement
"They" usually tell you to dissolve it in MrCement S.

But, basically, dissolved polystyrene is way too viscous for proper casting (unless you're casting 3D primitives), so if you want to recast something you use resin which has a viscosity of water (and you can get bubbles even then). Dissolved polystyrene is better suited for patching holes, trivial sculpting or similar simple puttying jobs.
>>
>>11205369
There's plenty of videos on youtube of people trying to cast with sprue goo showing mostly fails but it's much easier to use to sculpt
>>

Since we're talking about casting, I figure I'd ask: Assuming that I learned how to properly make two-part silicone molds, is there a decent/reliable way to melt sprue in order to recast a piece? My dad is an engineer so I might have access to some tools like a vacuum pot to help reduce the chances of bubbles forming in the mold and casting process.

The reason I want to use the same plastic is because there are going to be pegs and holes on the parts that I need to insert into, and I'm pretty sure resin won't work for that. So ideally I want to melt runner into a very thin consistency, pour it into the mold, shake out bubbles and such, and use a vacuum pot to suck out any remaining bubbles.
>>

What markers would be the best here?

>>11205456
You're not listening. Melted sprue is too viscous for the air to escape before it solidifies and if you add so much cement that it is not viscous, the cement will take forever to evaporate AND what's left will only fill like 30% of your mold because most of the stuff you added to the mix will evaporate.

>The reason I want to use the same plastic is because there are going to be pegs and holes on the parts that I need to insert into, and I'm pretty sure resin won't work for that.
The ONLY valid reason to use melted sprue is to patch/add to the piece that you are NOT going to paint so that the plastic matches perfectly. That's it. For everything else you use actual casting materials designed for casting.
You can add steel pegs to the resin part or you can just use CA cement to attach the resin to the plastic or you can make resin pegs and they will work to some extent (pic related).

heat it to a few hundred degrees in an injection molding machine. also your mold had better be made out of machined steel.

of course resin works for that, have you ever seen a resin GK? they have pegs for holding all their shit together. it's not supposed to be as good for mechanical joints though due to durability IIRC. if you're really crazy about it you could scratchbuild the peg itself out of polystyrene and pin it to the main resin piece

You certainly can hand paint with lacquers. They are not as forgiving as enamels, but for small details they work just fine.
As for the respirator, it depends. If you have a great big dish filled with thinned paint in front of you then yeah, you will need protection. But if you thin a tiny amount you're probably not even going to smell it.

Somehow I doubt a non-lacquer based thinner could thin the current MrColor paints, so the GGX thinners must still be lacquer-based. As for new "likely" regulations, it's probably the case of prohibiting some specific substance that "is known to cause cancer in the state of California" or someshit.

they're literally selling what they had at the tour and they've advertised that. Anyone who went to the tour would tell you they had a ton more regular items than exclusives and everything was entirely differed at each location. It looks like they're doing the split it up into different days have different items.
>>
>>11217362
How new are you? They have an online expo every year doing this. Great way to get the exclusives without flying to japan or paying scalper prices.
>>
>>11217442
You think I didn't know that already? That doesn't change the fact that this is relevant news for Gunpla enthusiasts.
>>
>>11217445
You made it sound like they were dumping the leftovers out of nowhere. Theyre actually shipping the kits in december this year instead of jan/feb like last year. Probably need a q4 sales boost cause its been a shitty year for the economy and all that.
>>
>>11217416
why would the do that?

It's possible that it gets reprinted in Japan, but you'd have a stupidly hard time of finding one for sale even if you searched. And unfortunately it's probably near-impossible to find any left over from the era when it was sold at Toys-R-Us. It would be a lot easier to scratchbuild or 3D print the part(s) you need.

You're in luck though, because my brother just so happens to have built one when he was a kid too. I was going to hold on to this until I eventually saw an opportunity to kitbash it, but frankly that day will probably never come.

Is there any downside to storing paint in this type of squeeze bottle vs. the type with a removable cap? I was wondering if the paint might gunk up the twisting mechanism, or if these were less airtight or something.
>>
>>11220602
They are less airtight. Switch the lid out when storing will help.

I've been storing hardware store lacquer thinner in a bottle like >>11220602 for years, never noticed any evaporation. But the gunking up is a problem.

how?
i thought only acrylics had this problem

The paint/glue/whatever else I tried putting in there gunked up, so now I only put the thinner in that bottle, and that works fine for me.

Guise, does anyone know if the older 30MM/MS option parts are ever gonna be reprinted? I feel kinda bummed I missed em.

I saw a video about customizing gunpla models and it looks cool, but I've never watched gundam or anything.

Dropper bottles superior.

Seems someone on Amazon figured out they can be more helpful by selling them with BBs, to make shaking/mixing the paint easier.
>>
>>11221636
>everything costs $1000?
it can be a relatively cheap hobby. hg model kits are around 20 bucks, you can brush paint or use paint markers for cheap. (my local store has little bottles of hobby paint for ~$3 each).
it gets pricier if you wanna start airbrushing but still comfortably sub $1k total to get all the tools you need for that (~$100 compressor, ~$100 airbrush, ~$200 for a spraybooth if you wanna spray indoors, plus misc shit like masking tape and alligator clips)
>>
if anything the most expensive way to do the hobby is probably NOT customizing anything, since if you just snap kits together and throw them on the shelf you can go through them much faster and thus buy a lot more over all.
well that or being one of the "people" who buy more and more kits while never actually building any until they have a massive backlog/boxfort
>>
>>11221636
If you just want to assemble them like children's toys (e.g. just exactly follow the instructions), they're very cheap. But unless you buy a Real Grade or Master Grade it'll look like crap, and even a straight RG and MG build will look bad because of the bare plastic look.

The whole point of getting deep into the hobby is to try to improve it beyond the bare plastic look (paint shades that match how they look in the anime, color correction for the parts that are molded in the wrong color, not using any stickers, etc.), and for that it can get relatively expensive. However, there are only four mandatory tools that are actually expensive: Airbrush, compressor, spray booth, and respirator. And even then you shouldn't pay more than $200 for any one part unless you're super picky (hell, you could probably build a really shitty spray booth for less than $50 if you don't mind doing DIY). An airbrush setup sounds expensive, but if you're serious about the hobby then it's actually cheaper in the long run since your other option is to buy spray cans for $10-20 each. Airbrushing, despite how expensive all the equipment is, saves you money on the paint due to how much more efficient it is (you can control the intensity of the spray instead of an on/off push) and being able to mix shades of color that aren't available through rattle cans.

Ultimately it's all up to you, but compared to other hobbies like bicycling or whatnot, modeling is super cheap. Most of the expensive stuff are one-time purchases that you only do once, the painting consumables aren't all that expensive if you buy in bulk (the other thing you learn, shipping charges add up super fast if you order online inefficiently). Do your research, ask questions (no such thing as a dumb question if you're just starting out), and plan things out before committing.

Disregard the unrelated stuff, I am happy to see the increase in quality of the 3D printed stuff compared to last year.

I mean yes, most of the 3D printed vendors are still focus on smaller items but I think this is the first time I see a actual fully printed kit- rather than just a giant statue.

Yes they are still expensive. this thing is like $300 USD but it's better than nothing. And even the smaller stuff like the add on parts they seemed to be moving to better materials.

I wonder with the resurrection of KO kits, how long do we have to wait until we see bootlegs of the current 3D printed model in plastic injection form?

I spent almost 200 on just the air compressor but got a good 2 gallon tank one. Airbrush was 45 on sale. Cleaning pot 20. Lacquer thinner 20. Hose 20. So right over 300, not counting paint. All within the last week.

>buy cheap $45 chinese airbrush (the tool where quality actually matters)

>>
>>11221636
>then everything costs $1000
Funny story, only partially related:

>want to build a dust case for my micro drill
>get some wood and some hinges and other misc shit
>time to cut and assemble
>only free time is at night
>if I start my mitre saw in the basement in the middle of the night it will work as a nice civil defence exercise
>look at options online
>find this hobby tool brand PROXXON that makes all kinds of woodworking tools for wood ship modellers and such
>their mitre saw is tiny and toylike, costs like a full-size one
>boy, they sure milk those suckers
>let's try it and return it, just for shits and giggles
>get it, try it, very little noise, very little dust, cuts the piece very cleanly AND I can run it at night without waking up the house
Hobby tools can be stupidly expensive, but they fill a need that sometimes can be worth paying for.
>>
>>11222211
No. The airbrush is good, and hit a sale on it. Double action.

As for compressor, I need a good quiet compressor with a higher cfm rate. One that wont burn out in an hour of painting. One I wont have to sit for 3 minutes waiting for the tank to get up to pressure. Plus I can always buy other airbrushes in the future.

How's the p-bandai stuff? They have a 3 set of Zeta, Mkii, and Hiaku Shiki with a special stand that displays all 3 for $100. I already have the revive Zeta, and the pbandai site doesn't tell me anything about the models themselves. A second Zeta isn't the end of the world because I'll just leave one in Waverider, but still.

I have that set. The zeta is the 0088 version, slightly changed from the revive. Mk2 has a nice metallic plastic(zeta as well). Hyaku shiki has the mg 2.0 style coating.
>>
>>11223724
It's the same as last year, just a bunch of clear colors and the occasional good kit. You have to log in instantly on release to get the good stuff before it sells out.
>>
>>11223731
Is it a good pickup? I'm debating it as an early xmas gift.
>>
>>11223731
0088 is the one with the color separated wings, right?

Also, ugh, it's the original MG HS 2.0 coating. Pales in comparison to the vac metal gold. But at least it's much better than the original metallic butterscotch.

Kinda, the wings are red with black stickers, instead of the other way around with the gep. Easier to paint. They may drop that shiney hg shiki, but that zeta set took a while to sell out last year.

>>11223739
Its not a bad set, main selling point the 0088 zeta. A bit pricey due to the shiki getting the coating.
>>
>>11223776
The shiki looks great. The Mkii looks a little dark. Shame about the stickers on the Zeta still, but I guess it's too much to ask for a HG.

The one on the right is presumably the one that comes with the kit. I believe those are the correct colors. I'll probably get the set. It seems rather nice for $100, which is also conveniently right into free shipping. Been on a Zeta kick recently and just finished The O HG and was eyeing a Hyaku Shiki anyway.

Currently working on probably my favorite MS. Finally got around to grabbing the revive after getting the funnel kit for a decent price.
>>

The Mk.II looks so good in that silvery grey. Wish they sold it by itself, I have no interest in the Shiki or Zeta.
>>
>>11221636
What's worse is when you're willing to blow the money but no room/workshop for airbrushing or 3d printing.
>>
>>11223793
Left the aeug real type and right the 0088 set, yes.

>>11223848
Is a good set but yeah, not really worth it just for 1 of the kits. If you had a friend you could split the set with, that would be your best bet.

>>11223887

Pretty sure wave has the only decent sorta modern kit for the classic slug, but I don't think it's been printed in forever. Xinshi makes new kits but they kinda blow.

They have a good silhouette and the right proportions, but you really have to doll them up to look decent.

I see constant worrying about this, and honestly it sounds like something that's really unlikely to happen, along the lines of shit like "What if China immediately calls in all of its debt with the US?"

Gunpla is something you can just not buy and be perfectly fine and alive. The same doesn't apply to a bunch of other everyday things that would shoot up in cost that you simply have to purchase.

Though, the shit they protect is so brittle, that it will crack simply by sitting on a shelf. And there was no improvement over the years.
