It's extra funny too when you remember that it originally started life as the 'Doo-Head of Bone Island' (as in Voodoo, but remember that Lego is Danish). They were in a dire spot in the 90's as sales had been flagging and were looking to take on an edgier older boys market (I was 7 in 2000, and looking for such a kind of toy myself). This stated the Technix line which was successful but had no staying power cause it didn't have any lore. So they put a story team together to try to figure something out for a new product line. I think some of them had taken a tropical vacation recently so they settled on a tropical island theme early (originally voodoo themed, but later Maori themed, which actually brought a lawsuit in 2003 that resulted in some minor name changes). The masks came cause the heads they had were pretty scary looking (by young kids standards), as well as all the same, so the masks helped hide the face and add more personality, so it became a big part of the lore (and bonus points- side collectables to sell). Anyway the writers went hog-wild cause I think Lego basically gave them NO supervision whatsoever, since this was the first of its kind. One of the lead writers had a cancer diagnosis at the time (he would survive) and combined the idea of some light environmentalist themes with the idea of imagining his cells literally fighting the cancer in battle. So they settled early on the idea that the island is secretly a giant robot and the Bionicles are like his cells trying to restore him (though this reveal actually wouldn't come until 2009). (cont.)
>>80045974From there, well every toy needed a name, each color set implied a unique tribe and powers, they had unique elemental powers on top of unique mask powers, and each year you need a new set of bad guy toys and good guy toys, plus the 'small' sets and they need backstories and powers and reasons why the good guys are fighting the bad guys. Then about every three years they would change their island location which would come with incredibly detailed maps for locations where stories would be set. Funnily enough, I'd say only 3/4ths of the locations on these maps would actually be used in the stories. Maybe cause they wanted to fire the imagination of kids like me for stories they could make up in their minds as they played with the toys. Anyway the meta-plot was that you had an evil shadow god (ultimately revealed to be more the boss of a bunch of other bad OP shadow guys) that wanted to keep the giant robot-god that the setting was on/in asleep while the good guys wanted to wake him up. With the last twist was actually everything was according to keikaku and he at the last second would possess the robot and become God. And then the good guys of another planet would build their own robot to beat the evil out of him because the writers were trying to do a soft-reboot because the Lore had been going on for 10 years. Which is the main reason it ended. Like I started collecting them when I was 7, and I was 17 when the line ended. Sure I was still collecting them, but I wasn't Lego's target audience, and for new kids trying to jump halfway in- well like I said the story is DENSE. (cont.)

Like- Transformers has cartoons right? And if you want to learn the bulk of Transformers lore you just watch the Transformers cartoons. But for Boinicle? Did you know that the original six toys had little mini-cd's in their containers? You'd put them in your PC (oh- for the zoomers, PC's used to have Disk Drives, think of them like archaic USB ports) and you would watch these awesome 3D renders and explore parts of the setting and get glimpses of the lore. You had an awesome flash game, some other flash animations, and a sequel to the flash game on the Lego website, you had comics that were part of a subscription to Lego Magazine (which I had), you had a series of books (which I all owned) and you had four movies. You want to understand the lore? You have to hunt down ALL of that. Thankfully all the visual media is easily found on youtube (I'd be shocked to discover if the Lego Website still hosted any of it), but the Books and comics are hard to track down. So naturally if you're like 8, and you see a Bionicle toy in Walmart and think 'oh that looks cool I wonder what the story is' you can see why Lego would think that they'd let the thing get out of control. That said, they've done pretty much nothing with the brand outside of an abortive reboot attempt. Part of it being the Lego higher ups think that Bionicle doesn't mesh with their 'family friendly' image, despite the fact Bionicle literally saved the company in the 00's. Their other big brand was trying to mix lego's with electronics which created a vibrant hobby scene to this day, did NOT make a lot of money.
