So people tend to draw the eyes kind of emotionless and empty when in actual honesty the Pokemon isn't like that at all. i tried writing a long-form story about a human male and a futa anthro, but i ran into a problem: the people interested in the sex didn't care about the characters or the story beyond the setupthe people interested in the character or the story didn't care much for the sexthere also isn't a whole lot that distinguishes them from the other configurations of anthros if they don't make sex the center and purpose of their whole life. why would they be interested in a male, human or otherwise, beyond using them as an onahole every now and then? even if they fucked 3 hours a day, what do they do the other 21 hours? what do other humans think of the guy who chooses to be with her? what do other anthros think about her settling for a fuckhole boyfriend?i guess what i'm trying to say here is that they make great material for single images and maybe some porn comics (ie a tail of tales), they can't really exist outside of sex-focused media.

I agree that the sexual and non-sexual parts of the story together would struggle to find an audience, but I don't think there's zero audience for a narrative where the love interest also has a penis. If you want to worldbuild, you can delve into how the existence of a third widely recognized sex would affects society, how relationships with them would be seen by the public, etc. There's also plenty of possibilities for a story with an MTF anthro, if that's something you're into.
