FAQ
Q: I'm a total beginner. Where should I start?
A: Do the exercises in either "Keys to Drawing" by Bert Dodson or "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Additionally, you can try the first few lessons of https://drawabox.com/ for building up muscle memory.

June, September and October are my favorites with the posing, especially with how September was rendered. Also the values and use of shadows in August make it look very striking.

Thank you! I've been studying Mattesi and looking to expand soon.

>>72082316
How long have you been drawing? It took me a while to get into it. Otherwise, you might be in a rut. Consider shaking up your routine.
>>
>>72082716
A year and a half give or take, not every day or even every week though, mind you. I do remember being better at drawing as a teenager and then I just stopped, think I'm fucked now because I'm over 25 and if I'm not mistaken the brain starts losing neuroplasticity from that point onwards
>>
>>72082249

elite ass *wort wort*
>>
how much does tracing better artists take you farther in a technical sense
>>
>>72082853
If you were drawing as a teenager, then those connections should still be there more or less. I actually started at 25, and even if you lose plasticity you can build and strengthen neural connections through habits. I think if you start drawing consistently, even if a little bit, the habit would build.

>>72082894
It depends on why you trace. I've traced drawings before to study them, but for studies I usually do them side by side, checking at various stages. If you, say, analyze the forms or expressions, thinking about the artist's thought process, you'll learn more than if you trace just to trace. Like any study, you'll get more if you break it down.
>>
>>72082894

Tracing without purpose will get you nowhere. Tracing with intent to study and understand the piece can teach you some new things. Trying to replicate the work of artists you like is a key step in pushing your own abilities and figuring out new ways to approach art. Mindless copying serves little purpose though; if its something you can do without effort then it probably isn't teaching you anything.
>>
>>72083242
I would generally stay away from tracing outright and try for a side-by-side study instead. You have to be extremely purposeful when you trace for study, otherwise you're just wasting your time.
I've only ever fruitfully done it once and it was specifically to test the accuracy of a brush I remade.

Any other fun-facts about coloring anyone has on hand?
>>
>>72082316
I've been drawing for probably longer than most anyone in these threads and I don't think I'm the most skilled here by a long shot.
The thing is, that doesn't matter in the slightest. Art is a joy to make, and you should celebrate yourself and your own growth, instead of comparing your current skill to others.
>>
>>
I figured it out.
My new cycle is:
>do really well at art
>feel really confident
>hit a wall
>be unable to continue
>get mad
>resign myself to drawing a million pikachus
>hopefully do really well again on something that isn't pikachus?

At least I found a way to stay productive while in a suck phase.
>>
>>72082853
You might lose neuroplasticity as you age, but unless you're senile, you're still capable of learning and building new connections. It just takes a bit longer. I started at 31 and I progressed pretty quick.

I'd give the pig girl's upper arms a little more meat, and I'd rework the neck connection. Necks aren't perfect silos, they contour to the jaw and the back of the head. Tweak the butt cheeks, her left is a lot bigger than her right. I can't really comment on the mouse girl, more bestial bodies are outside of my expertise.
I think you did the faces really well, especially the pig girl's. It sells depth very convincingly!

I like it. the stylization and color palette is nice, and the little hints of squish is really pleasing.
All I would change, if at all, would be to apply some of the more gradual shading to the rest of the body as you did her gloves and leggings.
>>
>>72087328
I could try that, but I did want to set apart the gloves and leggings as a "different" type of material.
Real pantyhose likes to diffuse light a lot.
>>
>>72087431
yeah, I could see how you'd want that to be different, but having some kind of gradient could go a long way with her body. It just feels a little flat in comparison.
This is kinda nitpicky though.

This is just a myth, neuroplasticity continues throughout your life.

The whole idea comes from a misrepresentation of a study on the prefrontal cortex.
>>
>>72091990
This, "Neyroplasticity" is a cope argument for "I'm old and lazy why aren't I good at things with no effort"

I think the 25 marker can be best described as "I've matured enough to have formed an identity/character, and my opinions won't change much throughout the rest of my life." But of course, nothing's set in stone, and you certainly can still learn whatever you want to learn.

The brain is an immensely powerful organ, despite what some people might make you think.

This was a bit trickier than I thought. Basically, what you're showing is if the skin was directly on top of a scapula. Unless this person is pretty emaciated, you'd see more of the muscle structure underneath instead, which is much larger.
It's hard to explain in words, so I have a couple breakdowns of how I map out back bones and muscles.

my advice would be that since this is a furry, the outline of any rendering on her body can be "fur" shaped if that makes sense
what i mean is that you should worry about learning to describe different materials with your rendering- which you did a good job of so far

how many people here actually use Krita as their daily driver software? I spent some time with it in the past but moved on to CSP. for me it's the overwhelwing amount of resources that make it hard to know where to begin, the 3 hour tutorials that are more like 6 to 7 hours long if you actually pause and follow along, and the fact every other book on how to draw is pages upon pages of hyperdetailed drawings with walls of text alonside them and no step by step process on how to get there

Bad news (for me): As expected, ballpoint ink does not stand up well to alcohol markers. The alcohol in those markers are organic, but even that will make the ink bloom, which isn't very good. Archival and gelly do a better job of standing up to the alcoholic menace.

The gel pen, however, needs to be a good one. For example, my Pilot G-2 tends to leave teeny globs that take longer to dry, thus being prone to smudging.

Just trad artist things. Digichads need not worry ;)

I don't want to make the mistake a lot of artists do when drawing anthros, where the "fur" just becomes "funny skin color" and it's shiny like skin is. Of course, cartoony styles can be as fantastical as you want, but it drives me crazy whenever I see it in a "skilled" piece

Normally I'd have just left this delivery in the drawthread but I was so happy with this deep dicking that I wanted to share, plus its nice to know that I'm not completely stuck with yoshi brainrot. I think my practice led to a very good end result but I sometimes wonder how 'readable' my finished stuff is. I love my cum showers and conveying energy with FX/text/imagery but wonder if it can be tad distracting or detract from the main focus of the image at times? Maybe I'm overthinking it but more eyes or criticism never hurts.

I'm such a sucker for thick ass binary lines and lighting as its one of my favorite styles. Is there a secret to that textured binary brush? I've always wanted something like that in SAI but it has always lacked it to my knowledge which is a major bummer for me. I think this piece is pretty awesome and definitely serves as an inspiration for future endeavors of mine. I look forward to the results of your quest for chub and will have to search you up for more later. Thanks for sharing, kind drawfriend and keep at it.

If I can figure out how to share a Krita brush, you can have it. I saw this Loona drawing somewhere and loved the texture it used, wanted it for myself. I think I modified a Krita default rough ink pen and set opacity and ratio all the way up, and gave it a little more scattering.

i used a filter layer over every other and then used the eraser to cut it down to the garden, then used an eraser gradient to have it increase with distance, maybe there's a better way to do it.

it's "skeleton" made with light h pencil ,(you could call it gestures i think) with body drawn with darker hb pencil
>>
>>72147743
in general the underlying guiding skeleton from basic shapes is called "construction". gesture is a few squiggles you lay down when you've drawn a million constructions and it's drilled into your brain and all you need is a rough estimation of how pose will work in a composition

>gesture is a few squiggles you lay down when you've drawn a million constructions and it's drilled into your brain and all you need is a rough estimation of how pose will work in a composition
Not quite right. Gesture is useful for beginners as well when it comes to practicing making characters look lively rather than stiff as egyptian statues. The tricky part is preserving that liveliness during construction.
>>
>>72150699
this is completely my opinion but gestures are like boxes. they definitely have their utility and are good to learn but you shouldn't make a schedule of grinding them
>>
>>72149754
Construction is the underlying shapes that a form is composed of. It doesn't have to be a skeleton, or cubes, it's just a framework to help you visualize as an artist. You use it to determine a subject's presence in 3D space, on a 2D plane.
Gesture is the flow of the pose, the exaggeration. It's like an abstract representation of movement for an image that is not moving; or, you can think of it as a single frame of animation, if it were to lead into more frames, or has led from previous ones. Gestures can contain construction, or not, and almost everything has a gesture, from the whole body to the pose of the fingers.

Both of these are very hard if you're a retard, like me. :D

How have I done with the hair and facial structure? Does the facial symmetry look okay?
>>
>>72150897
True enough. Gestures should be short and simple, so there really isn't much to grind with them to begin with. Once you've got a good handle on making them consistently fluid and dynamic, you're good to go. Just like with consistently making cubes in more-or-less correct perspective just by eyeballing it.
>>
>>72138298
You worked real hard on this and it's nice to see the final result on this cute sheep gf. I think you've got a good focus on her with the background being blurred out a bit. Good job.

For me, sometimes there's a lot of changes, but usually very little in an hour. I'll spend some time browsing 4chan or Twitter during that hour before getting back to drawing while sort of being frozen by my choices. Am I afraid of change? Am I afraid of commitment? I want to put add more to my sketch in an hour than usual.

A couple things;
The eyes are different heights, when wrapping around the head, they'd appear as thinner, but never shorter.
the chin might be a little bit forward
the hairline circles around the head like a hood, which if that's what you're going for then ignore this, but usually hairlines trace along the squared-off nature of the forehead.
Getting in the habit of flipping your canvas horizontally will reveal these little things to you more easily than trying to eyeball it without.

It's the torso that's off, the lower body looks good. In the original drawing, it looked like her right hand was in front of her left knee, and her left hand in front of nothing, which doesn't seem to be the intention. If you DO want her pose to be slightly off-center, then her torso should be twisting, and her left arm should be bending.
Likewise, same reason why the right shoulder shouldn't be higher than her left. I pulled her body in a little closer, and tweaked the arms. There's really nothing you need to do with the face or lower body, they look good. Although do a double take on her left ear, not really sure what's going on there.
Lastly, boobs really don't go up that high. If you're planning on her wearing a bra, they should be distorted somewhat.

Thanks again for the notes! I didn't want to cover up too much of her silhouette, so I lowered her upper torso a bit to have her hands better in line with her legs, and I redrew the ears to be a bit more...idk detailed?
I wanted the breasts to look like they're pressed together without them looking like the usual giganto-mega-milkers I usually draw, but I've also added a bit more hang to them.
I also raised her left shoulder to make her arm look appropriately long.

I’m not done with the basic shading, nor adding textures, but I’m getting overwhelmed with the lighting. I can’t make it convincingly an open door into a dark room. Tried messing around with layers of gold or orangy on top to simulate that kind of color, but it’s not working. Getting to the point of not wanting to work on it anymore because I’m stuck.
>>
>>72174638
Maybe an overlay layer with a flat color over the entire pic can provide some unity with the hues? Maybe that's throwing off the feel.

My shadow on the wall is wrong, then, because it should be overhead, like if you opened a dark room and the light is from a fixture in the ceiling, but now that makes me think the person opening the door should cast a shadow…

shadows are more crisp the closer it is to the light source. you can give some depth by setting the Shadow's edges to varying degrees of blur the farther it is from the opening of the door. Nothing too extreme, but if you have the shadow on a different layer a slight gaussian blue can go a long way.

I'm slowly accepting the idea that it's perfectly fine to like and appreciate your own art, however hard it may be at times and I've been attempting to avoid putting my own art down when posting as it ruins confidence. My art often doesn't live up to my 'vision' but some anons like it even if it's silly doodles and I have to accept it and not backhand them by bashing myself. Your art is awesome and anons enjoy it, myself included and it's saddening to see you cast doubt on it as you put in the effort by drawing it in the first place. Not every single piece has to be the biggest and most ambitious piece ever and it's ok to just throw out doodles to keep yourself active and drawing. This goes for everyone here but no matter what stage you are at you have to try and appreciate that you ARE doing your best even if it doesn't feel like it. So long as you are drawing what you can, whenever you can then you're doing fucking great and making the effort.

The guy’s groin looks a little too long and lacks some detail (ie the penis is too low). The girl’s left boob is also defying gravity a little. Remember the robertsons are basically water balloons attached to the pecs. Other than that it looks good to me.

Used to take care of marine mammals. So I used "WistfulPorpoise" for a while because I missed it, and that's still my FA name.

I used to play a game called DCSS way too much and it has an enemy in it called a 'Very Ugly Thing', which I feel kinship with. I created my kink profile on a total whim so I just went with 'Very Filthy Thing' on impulse, feeling that was fitting for NSFW art.

On reflection I wish I had picked something different just cause my art isn't THAT filthy compared to a lot of people.

I can at least say this much, try working on facial symettry. Make a rectangle over he face, see what is too high or too low.
Also lol, boobies are too high
>>
>>72206140
That would imply I know how to draw planes on a 2D image as if they were in 3D. I do not. I've put so much time and effort into trying to learn without success that I simply don't think I'm capable of it.

>boobies are too high
I actually don't think they're too high--I think my torso is too short or something. I always struggle with this and the placement of the neck. So her boobs are too high, but I don't think the reason is bad placement, I think it's because I don't know how to place the upper torso/neck area properly. Despite practicing again and again. Because of aforementioned retardation.

Sigh. I really hate art sometimes.
>>
>>72198713
Nose feels like it's just floating around, Lombaxes do have a little bit of a snout. You can probably indicate it better than I am here but it's important to the look of the face no matter how you do it.

Have you tried drawing after having a considerably strong edible?
That sounds like it's just "funny haha weed" but it genuinely helped me visualize things to an insanely better degree. The benefits also last, it's not like you need to be high whenever you want to draw. Once you get those pathways started they stick around and you can keep exercising them without drugs.
>>
>>72206632
I don't do drugs, so no.
>>

Something like this might be a bit better/more on model, after looking at a reference it's a more of an angle than a slope between the brow and nose.

>>72197372
I just made it up on the spot. Called myself “type” once, so when I started posting my writing elsewhere, I called myself “TypeAnon.” Because back then I only saw myself typing, not drawing, so when I moved on I just stuck with the name.

99% of the time I'm in the same boat, I don't enjoy altered states. Drugs are a tool like any other, though. They have specific effects on the brain and body, and these effects can be taken advantage of with measured, intentional, and (most critically) sparing use.
Or you can be like my boss who had a gummy in the evening for three years straight, went cold turkey, and had pot withdrawal psychosis nightmares for two weeks.

Power's back!
Alright, There's two big takeaways I have from this. It doesn't seem like you made a "skull" for her head, to keep everything in proportion and perspective. It's a cute drawing of a head, but it's not a "constuction" of her head.
I haven't really drawn Rivet before or saved much Rivet porn, so I don't know how abstracted/stylized you want her, I just went with the original model for reference. The biggest things to get right on a head in my opinion is the jaw, and the eye sockets. Once you get those, usually the rest of the head is an easier affair. The black portion is a drawing of a "Skull". You don't have to draw out the entire thing every time, but it's a great mental tool. The black dots are what would be the high points on her cheeks.
The body was the other big thing, and a lot simpler. It's simply skewed proportions, namely too short and too wide. Now, with keeping the big funny cartoon head, you could simply use the transform tool to shrink the torso/enlarge the head, and it should still be fine. Her actual body seems like it has mostly normal proportions, they just shortened her legs and gave her a huge head. It shouldn't be too hard to reference from an actual woman.
I think she'll look really nice when she's finished! Anatomy is a pain in the ass to learn fresh, I was fortunate enough to take it as a college course. You remember skeletons when you have to take your midterms on them. Muscles are important to learn as well, but I'd say by far the most important thing to learn is skeletons.

Thank you for doing this. I apologize that you had old work to do it on, but I took everyone's advice when I was making changes even before you posted this.
I tried to apply betteranatomy after the initial sketch. I think her torso is still too short. Hopefully I fixed her skull somewhat. I tried to use some guides for it.

I guess I'll let this sit for now as I question my hobbies.
