I’ve had 10 wellness checks over the past 2 months. It’s starting to make me feel like I should just give up even though that stuff about wanting to dog was just fantasy, I didn’t really want to be put on all fours. I guess the affini don’t see it that way. I can tell an affini has looked me up when they perk up after a bit after being in the room with me and start their flirting routine.

Youngblooms in particular usually file a notice right after meeting me. I guess they want a Terran and think I’d be easy to handle unlike a former navy soldier. I’m the equivalent of the soft dog breed that kids get, which makes it even more humiliating.

You wouldn't believe how many first blooms want to demolish a feralist but then have no idea what to do once they get their vines on one. They just can't wrap their cores around really hurting a floret, so they don't. When they inevitably fail to achieve much of anything, they naturally gravitate to an older affini for help. Once you provide a little advice they sort themselves out, but by then their florets tend to have gotten attached to yours and it would be cruel to part them. Explain this to me, just reading the first story now.

i'm trying to remember the name of this story if anybody remembers it and can help me out, i really want to find it again. it was about this independent that woke up the morning after getting really high on some xenodrugs, and the affini that gave them the xenodrugs is there when they wake up. there's a lot of gaslighting and convincing the independent that everything is perfectly normal. my memory of it is fuzzy, but i'm pretty sure the affini had sent the terran a gift basket with some xenodrugs that the terran tried, and then when they were high out of their mind the affini got them to sign away their independence. i forget if it was on ao3 or one of the microfics that gets posted in the hdg discord, but i would love you forever if you know the name <3

The affini are a hyper-advanced race of alien plants who're building an intergalactic empire, turning all other sapient beings they come accross into their pets (florrets). Theyre most definitely supremacists and imperealists, but they are also genuinely doing it for what they see as the "greater good", its just they dont value "freedom" in their value system and think it'd be much better if we were all happy pampered pets. Not all of a species becomes directly owened, in humaitys case "only" 25-40%ish. Idependants are those other 70ish percent. They still have no rights officaly, but are generaly living in a utopia like never before, unless they cant manage to have proper self care, in which case they might get domesitcated. "Free terrans" or "ferralists" are those that actively commit wrongthink or outright rebbel against their rule. Before they conquerd us, humanity was renamed to "terrans" and ruled by the "terran accord", which is basicaly todays corporate capitalism oligary turned up to 13 as a dystopic hellscape. Their technology is so advanced compared to ours, that we quite litteraly never stood a chance.
They acchice pettification / "domestication" via normal psycological manipulation plus an array of mindbending drugs which they use all the time in copious ammounts. To put the finializing cherry on top, florrets recive *the implant, which is some of their owners intergates with their CNS, and serves to remotley inject said drugs and also somtimes (depends on story desu) directly interferes with the proccess of free thought, editing inserting or dismissing thoughts as needed.

I think it's very fallacious to try to speak to future technology that is so advanced it may as well be magic to us. Affini conquer GALAXIES - plural - carry personal FTL devices for the express purpose of stopping dangerous things, and can literally make stuff from nothing. There's no guarantee their "computer" equivalents use technology even remotely the same as modern PCs. Their computation tech probably makes our most advanced computers look like banging rocks together.

The real answer isn't anything philosophical. It's simply just that having an easily accessible immortality button kills a major source of potential storywriting elements. It's *boring* from a story perspective unless you are specifically exploring immortality. And from a writing perspective, it's easier to relate to having mortal pets because, in the real world, we often far outlive our pets. The knowledge that they will likely die long before we do and that we still put so much effort into them is very easy to reflect onto the relationship of Affini and florets, both as a writer and reader.

I don't really know if I'd end up having true "consciousness" by the time I was installed in that device, so I guess I might not be capable of feeling *anything*, let alone "safe" and "calm". But... it'd be nice to know that the Affini looking after me is willing and able to provide that, so if they ever do take on another floret that's not just kinda like training wheels, they'll be able to provide them with the love and support they need. I just like to bust it out when arguments about the human consciousness break out. As a way to poke fun. Since you can’t really quantify anything about it. So arguing is pointless.

I mean tbf, I would probably be trans if I weren't already struggling to look even halfway attractive as a male. Transitioning would only make the bar for attractiveness *much* higher, and I'm failing to meet people's standards to begin with.

So instead of wanting to kill myself because I keep imagining something I can never have, I just try to ignore it. Which- following this thread isn't making that task easy, but the comfy escapism is worth it.

I'm not trying to self-depricate, I just look at it as a matter of fact. And I know repressing it probably isn't very healthy but what else can I do? I can't transition because I know for a fact it wouldn't go very well. My ideal body is nowhere near as tall or as broadly-built as the one I currently have, and HRT can't fix either of those. And the only alternative outside that or repression is something I really shouldn't entertain the thought of.

While hrt can't change how broad you are and kind only do a little to change your height it can still do great things. It'll prevent you from balding and gaining more body hair. Is it not better to strive towards your ideal than banalling accepting what you uave?
