Thread Question: We've talked about types of bugs, but are there any specific genera/species that don't get enough attention?

I lied, here's Chapter 6 of The Howler
>https://archiveofourown.org/works/61103611/chapters/159465379
Okay, NOW I need to take a break.
>>
>>72431288
Nice, though don't push yourself too hard. I see you made the inside of Eigen's mind part a lot clearer, and the flashes of lucidity at the start and end make me wonder if the encounter with the researcher sparked some sort of recognition of his actual situation or if it's just him coming to terms with what has happened after being stuck in the room for a while (or if it's the involuntary electroshock therapy). The discussion of the potential habitat is quite good, with a very plausible guess but with reasonable mistakes, likely in part due to not even being familiar with a planet similar to Earth given the gravity difference. I have to question how they would be able to tell he was modified genetically without having access to a regular set of DNA unless there was some sort of leftover material from the method used to modify the DNA. Also, this is really nitpicky but using anthropomorphizing in reference to Eigen irks me since it's basically saying giving human-like traits to a human and being said by an alien, but I'm not sure if there's a way to convey that in a fashion that keeps the same meaning and tone. There's also a typo in the Nestiri part with "Did this make this herself". Not trying to complain with these sort of nitpicks though, this chapter was great, and I hope to see how the knowledge of the genetic tampering affects the handling of Eigen after your well-deserved break
>>
Holy shit I did not realize I wrote an entire paragraph for that, sorry about that
>>
>>72432416
Hey thanks,
Yeah I was a little hesitant on anthropomorphizing as well, and it's difficult to think of something that carries the same tone, but if you think it's an issue I'll probably go with my gut and change it. As for the DNA, I specifically mentioned she was looking for post-mitotic cells to see if there's been any significant changes in its DNA compared to the cells that it had when birthed, so she's not looking for an engineered organism so much as she's looking for any tampering with its DNA while it's alive.

I don't know why I started liking Ribombee, but here I am saving images and posting her. I might have brain problems.
>>72422674
Unpopular opinion, but I think bee OCs are overplayed. there's plenty of other options for cool bug designs, but I think the general mainstream consensus on bees has went from "scary bug swarm that makes a horrible buzzing sound and can sting you dead" to "cute furry creatures that help the environment and make candy for us".

>I might have brain problems
I think we all do to some degree if we're here.
Also, I don't think that opinion is that unpopular, it's just unspoken. A large part of that though is that everyone who goes for a bee just goes for a honeybee or bumblebee and they all start to blend together, same thing with moths to a degree. If people would go out of their way to actually find an interesting species of bee rather than go for the same one done a hundred times over before, they wouldn't feel so overplayed.
>>
>>72440361
>A large part of that though is that everyone who goes for a bee just goes for a honeybee or bumblebee and they all start to blend together
Yeah, but I guess it's easy to make honey bees because of both mainstream appeal and all the ways people can use honey as a concept for sex-related reasons.
>If people would go out of their way to actually find an interesting species of bee rather than go for the same one done a hundred times over before, they wouldn't feel so overplayed
I think carpenter bees are cool, they have distinct sexual dimorphism traits and having a relation to wood could go many ways. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I barely see OCs like that. Nevertheless, other species would be be cool, but I chalk it up to artists only really understanding how bees work rather than knowing about other non-bee distinct bugs.
>>
>>72440477
I've seen only like 1 or 2 carpenter bee OCs besides the blue carpenter bee, and that one draws a fair number of people just by being blue. Honeybees just overshadow everything else though since as you said people at least somewhat understand them and half the depictions of them just have them be fuckable honey dispensers
>>
>>72422674
Ermine moths! I love ermine moths, they're really pretty and I almost never see them in art. Is it because they're really common and not very notable? I like to think I'd be an ermine moth... Small, cute, dumb... Though I think the last point applies to all moths so I don't know.

Maybe Edgar the Bug if that counts even though maybe he falls more in monster fucker territory.

>>72440361
I feel like I've seen a decent amount of moth species, even if people are maybe leaning to much into Saturniidae specifically. Other families like Sphingidae have lots of cool species too!
>>
>>72440662
It's more likely because they're not one of the few species in the mainstream unfortunately. I'd say Edgar counts, though that's just me
>>72440698
That and diving bell spiders are some of the ones that actually made me think of that question
>>72440714
Hence to a degree, but there's still a lot more out there that can be explored, and there's definitely a few that get more attention than others like silkmoths and rosy maple moths

I've been trying to figure this out for the game I've been working on concepts for and playing around in blender and unity with. I think personally I prefer when they're midway between human and bug size around ~3 feet tall like picrel, but I also think that smaller around 8-16 inches could be interesting from a gameplay perspective in that they're not quite bug sized but still very small. Even though the game would be set in a world only inhabited by intelligent anthro bugs, it would still impact how the physics interact with ballistics and the like... So ~3-3.5 feet ends up being closer to how you'd expect physics and ballistics to work intuitively over 8-16 inches even if that ended up being mechanically more interesting.

I like huge bugs, I think that we would see some interesting arthropod anatomy if they were able to be much larger/fill other roles in the ecosystem at a larger scale.

Dear lord.... Know who the artist is? I love seeing the bug abdomen.

Love that no matter which one it is, bugs are typically drawn with big butts.
