Thread Question: We've talked about types of bugs, but are there any specific genera/species that don't get enough attention?
>>72422674Weevil, better snoots than mosquitos.
>>72424098Weevils aren't bad, but there's still a fair number of different weevil genera/species, any specific type of weevil that deserves more attention?
I lied, here's Chapter 6 of The Howler>https://archiveofourown.org/works/61103611/chapters/159465379Okay, NOW I need to take a break.
>>72431288Nice, though don't push yourself too hard. I see you made the inside of Eigen's mind part a lot clearer, and the flashes of lucidity at the start and end make me wonder if the encounter with the researcher sparked some sort of recognition of his actual situation or if it's just him coming to terms with what has happened after being stuck in the room for a while (or if it's the involuntary electroshock therapy). The discussion of the potential habitat is quite good, with a very plausible guess but with reasonable mistakes, likely in part due to not even being familiar with a planet similar to Earth given the gravity difference. I have to question how they would be able to tell he was modified genetically without having access to a regular set of DNA unless there was some sort of leftover material from the method used to modify the DNA. Also, this is really nitpicky but using anthropomorphizing in reference to Eigen irks me since it's basically saying giving human-like traits to a human and being said by an alien, but I'm not sure if there's a way to convey that in a fashion that keeps the same meaning and tone. There's also a typo in the Nestiri part with "Did this make this herself". Not trying to complain with these sort of nitpicks though, this chapter was great, and I hope to see how the knowledge of the genetic tampering affects the handling of Eigen after your well-deserved break
Holy shit I did not realize I wrote an entire paragraph for that, sorry about that
>>72432416Hey thanks,Yeah I was a little hesitant on anthropomorphizing as well, and it's difficult to think of something that carries the same tone, but if you think it's an issue I'll probably go with my gut and change it. As for the DNA, I specifically mentioned she was looking for post-mitotic cells to see if there's been any significant changes in its DNA compared to the cells that it had when birthed, so she's not looking for an engineered organism so much as she's looking for any tampering with its DNA while it's alive.
>>72432612Ah, my bad, didn't fully process that line in the last chapter
>>72431288Poor guy's having a mental breakdown and Zyrrs is just showing off her human fanfiction. Thanks for the chapter.
>>72432472what bugs do to a motherfucker
>>72433548Bugs or not I'd be overanalytical (yet can still miss something right in front of me), though they likely didn't help
>>72433774is that a guy
>>72434895No, she's a girl
>>72437142Big bee
>>72424098>>72428167longer
>>72439840Would literally do this with this character
>>72439916Wrong image?
>>72439945It’s the right image, that’s charlotte from bunny maloney if you don’t know, I said I would do the same to her, and I don’t care you guys comparing her to toriel, there’s more goat characters than just toriel.
>>72439968Okay, but why bring her up in the bug thread?
>>72439968you lost bud? we fug bugs here
>>72439979my thoughts
is there’s a thread related to the message I sent?
>>72440038One of the straight furry threads on this board I guess
>>72440079yeah but it’s hard to choose which one
>>72422618I don't know why I started liking Ribombee, but here I am saving images and posting her. I might have brain problems.>>72422674Unpopular opinion, but I think bee OCs are overplayed. there's plenty of other options for cool bug designs, but I think the general mainstream consensus on bees has went from "scary bug swarm that makes a horrible buzzing sound and can sting you dead" to "cute furry creatures that help the environment and make candy for us".
>>72440206>I might have brain problemsI think we all do to some degree if we're here. Also, I don't think that opinion is that unpopular, it's just unspoken. A large part of that though is that everyone who goes for a bee just goes for a honeybee or bumblebee and they all start to blend together, same thing with moths to a degree. If people would go out of their way to actually find an interesting species of bee rather than go for the same one done a hundred times over before, they wouldn't feel so overplayed.
>>72440361>A large part of that though is that everyone who goes for a bee just goes for a honeybee or bumblebee and they all start to blend togetherYeah, but I guess it's easy to make honey bees because of both mainstream appeal and all the ways people can use honey as a concept for sex-related reasons.>If people would go out of their way to actually find an interesting species of bee rather than go for the same one done a hundred times over before, they wouldn't feel so overplayedI think carpenter bees are cool, they have distinct sexual dimorphism traits and having a relation to wood could go many ways. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I barely see OCs like that. Nevertheless, other species would be be cool, but I chalk it up to artists only really understanding how bees work rather than knowing about other non-bee distinct bugs.
>>72440477I've seen only like 1 or 2 carpenter bee OCs besides the blue carpenter bee, and that one draws a fair number of people just by being blue. Honeybees just overshadow everything else though since as you said people at least somewhat understand them and half the depictions of them just have them be fuckable honey dispensers
>>72422674Ermine moths! I love ermine moths, they're really pretty and I almost never see them in art. Is it because they're really common and not very notable? I like to think I'd be an ermine moth... Small, cute, dumb... Though I think the last point applies to all moths so I don't know.Maybe Edgar the Bug if that counts even though maybe he falls more in monster fucker territory.
>>72422674>>72440557Consider:https://www.naturespot.org/species/great-diving-beetle
>>72440361I feel like I've seen a decent amount of moth species, even if people are maybe leaning to much into Saturniidae specifically. Other families like Sphingidae have lots of cool species too!
>>72440662It's more likely because they're not one of the few species in the mainstream unfortunately. I'd say Edgar counts, though that's just me>>72440698That and diving bell spiders are some of the ones that actually made me think of that question>>72440714Hence to a degree, but there's still a lot more out there that can be explored, and there's definitely a few that get more attention than others like silkmoths and rosy maple moths
>>72440714I can name one other hawk moth OC because the artist for her posts in this thread and she doesn't even have the long proboscis they're known for. (The mail concept is cute though)
>>72422674Cramer's 88 Butterfly is so cool. These crazy patterns are only on one side.
>>72440960Now that's one I've never seen before, really cool. Reminded me of burnet moths and how I've only ever seen one art of them, though I have seen a cinnabar moth OC and they have a pretty similar look
>>72422674I also really like banded sphinx moths and haven't ever seen art of them.
>>72441101That's a nice one, have been a fan of the vine sphinx moth after seeing a picture of it a long while ago
>>72440206I can agree, the oversaturation played a part in why I made a termite character instead since I've never seen any.
>>72422674mole crickets
>>72441827
>>72440882>she doesn't even have the long proboscis they're known for. I did kinda adapt it by giving her a long tongue. More of a problem of when I designed her I was focused on everything of the hawk moth BUT the proboscis.
>>72439809>>72439820>>72439832>>72439840late but source?
>>72444911https://x.com/StupidSexyKnite/status/1844172722198413470
>>72445024thanks man
>>72441827I always forget Elom and Tekci are supposed to be mole crickets
>>72422674>genera and speciesYeah how about ants in detail beyond just "ants">Myrmecia girl who does not know what this "colony" thing is but it sounds like it's for cowards and weaklings.>Your date with an Eciton ant is just getting abducted into a living ball of ants because they don't do the "digging" thing.
>>72449474The only time people seem to really bother with anything that isn't just a generic ant is honeypots, would be interesting to see other species
>>72449848Engineer bug
>>72453002bug people would definitely gain the stereotype of always being engineers and the like
>>72453104Multiple sets of arms would likely be a big help to an engineer
>>72449930Somehow didn't include refrigerANT/coolANT as ice types.Weavers, leaf cutter farmers, dinosaur ants (Drones can get pregnant too), etc. They fight each other all the time.
>>72422618Anything for the queen.
>>72440206I think they are a tad overplayed, but considering how many time's bees/moths were the first "cute" insect someone interacts with it's inevitable.
>>72455096Now that you mention it I think I've seen at least a bit of art of leafcutters, along with some army ants
>Hey, botany. Can I get some... tomatoes...? Why are you staring at me like that?
>>72456232Well it's not like moths can blink
>>72422674tarantulas....houseflies.....
>>72457622Flies in general don't get much attention, but I feel like I've seen a fair number of tarantulas
>>72457719what about mosquitos, they're flies
>>72457719These two are cute, but what is the lil guy? Also I keep seeing art posted by this artist that's not on his pixiv. Does he post elsewhere?
>>72457737Mosquitos get a bit more attention but not by that much>>72457749He's a jumping spider, artist posts to twitter as wellhttps://x.com/sannota272
>>72457788Thank you, I was having trouble finding other accounts. I love their art a lot. I wish my drawing tablet wasn't busted so I could get back to my own concept art for this game, but I guess I can just work pencil, pen, and paper
>>72457050if you blink then you'll miss out on seeing a very cool moth
Moths ...
>>72459591I needed this in my life today
>>72458845
>>72459781
Do you prefer when bugs are tiny like real bugs, or more human-sized?
>>72464220Definitely larger bugs, they don't necessarily have to be exactly human size but at least be on roughly the same scale, because at smaller scales so much stuff becomes inaccessible
>>72464220I've been trying to figure this out for the game I've been working on concepts for and playing around in blender and unity with. I think personally I prefer when they're midway between human and bug size around ~3 feet tall like picrel, but I also think that smaller around 8-16 inches could be interesting from a gameplay perspective in that they're not quite bug sized but still very small. Even though the game would be set in a world only inhabited by intelligent anthro bugs, it would still impact how the physics interact with ballistics and the like... So ~3-3.5 feet ends up being closer to how you'd expect physics and ballistics to work intuitively over 8-16 inches even if that ended up being mechanically more interesting.
freedom fighter bugs
>>72472919Military bugs
>>72475036how would bug people like them talk?
>>72476828Maybe they would carry some sort of advanced text to speech devices
>>72449474Now that I look through the stuff I've saved there is at least one artist other than the one in the other reply who put a little more thought into ants
My goal for this year will be to somehow think of and draw at least one design for every insect order here I haven't already done.
>>72479200Good luck, definitely going to take quite some effort for that many. Also, surprised that there are insects explicitly called icebugs but the one ice/bug type we have is a moth
>>72479423Maybe GF will make one eventually. It's a pretty obscure group though. Can't survive the warmth at all and are endangered.
>>72479546Still had the option for something like the snow flea rather than an ice counterpart to volcarona
>>72479580Well Frosmoth is based off an actual species of moths that can survive sub zero temperature
>>72479631Did not know that, suppose I should probably look into stuff before complaining
>>72479681Yeah the Gynaephora genus or artic moths. Arctic woolly bear moths can spend 7 years as caterpillars in freezing temperatures.
>>72479831With there being multiple games with fire and/or ice moths there really ought to be a lightning/electric moth in something, but I haven't the faintest idea what it would be based on
>>72482238Such a cute moth
Silksong is not dead.
>>72484573
>>72485037>>72484573>When the game takes so long to release you start trying to make your own game with bugs... and guns
>>72479200Fuck it, tell me which group I should try doing next.
>>72485960Hemiptera, though I'm split on suggesting assassin bug or shield bug since they're both interesting
>>72486090Wow, assassin bug, that's a cool bug. Wonder what I could do for that.
Started playing Tinykin, seems to have a fair number of interesting bugs
>>72487742She gives me Renamon vibes
>>72422618From Screen to the Ring to the Pen to the King
>>72492343Whatever it is that she is wrapped in is definitely playing a big part in that
Pretty bug...
>>72498046Certainly an interesting bug, wonder how much use it will actually see though
>>72466406The milsim thing?
>>72464220I like huge bugs, I think that we would see some interesting arthropod anatomy if they were able to be much larger/fill other roles in the ecosystem at a larger scale.
>>72484573Nothing ever happens.
>>72485448
>>72501327bluuuue
>>72503857Blue bugs
>>72504864lady needs to eat more leaves
>>72505023Telling her that probably wouldn't go over too well
>>72506408I want to rub my finger across the fuzzy grooves in her big ol' abdomen
>>72506525I wonder how that would feel for her
>>72506616man bug people really get to walk around with all that hanging out huh?
>>72506951Would you prefer they didn't?
>>72507557Oh I'm fine with that, just making an observation.
>>72508616God I love bug abdomen
>>72508298Dear lord.... Know who the artist is? I love seeing the bug abdomen.Love that no matter which one it is, bugs are typically drawn with big butts.
>>72508879https://www.tumblr.com/coleopterabyteThough most of what that artist has made bug-wise has already been posted
I know there must be a twitter somewhere that might have more since this pic is from it but reverse image search is failing me and I can't remember the handle of the account
>>72514842Unfortunate that artist hasn't drawn bugs in a long while
