It's kind of surprising that Digimon isn't more popular. They even have a bunny wearing pants with machine guns for arms.
>>
>>81977416
Too much competition these days. And I feel like they do try to dip into the nostalgia jar every 3 or 4 years by making a new digimon series or game. And it just never generates enough hype. It’s kind of like Stargate. Liked by fans but it never became huge

Frontier flopping, and the subsequent drought of any real centralizing media presence for a decade and some change is responsible for that.
The "average" digimon experience is watching the anime up to tamers, playing a game or two, bouncing off of Frontier, then reconnecting with Digimon around Cyber Sleuth when Digimon suddenly reminded everyone that it exists/Pokemon annoyed people one time too many.
Then digging through some of the stuff they missed like Savers or Xross wars, or the DS games, to mixed results, then playing Time Stranger and/or watching the new anime.
Slight variations on this general story exist, but I see it fucking everywhere.

This in itself has a pretty odd effect on tbe fan base, where you have the people who stuck with Digimon through Frontier/found it in the middle who have one set of preferences, and the people who missed the middle who have a different set, and making something for both arms of the fanbase is thus difficult. Some people like the cosplay mons, some people despise them. Some people like the royal knights, omninon, and shit, some people want more weird gribblies and glup shittos.

Unfortunately due to a number of factors, OP.

1. the show was good, but for the most part, serialized. Serialized shows will, on-average, have a harder time catching on than episodic content that can reliably be re-ran ad infinitum.

2. the card game flopped at first. Compare this to Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon, which both nailed their first international card games. I love Digi-Battle but I was already a Digimon fan, having cards of Digimon to go along with my Pokemon ones was just a gimme.. the cards themselves didn't have dynamic enough art to be collected for that reason alone, nor an in-depth enough game loop to justify to any outsiders.

3. the games were never on one system or able to be connected widely. Even a guide for Pokemon Firered and Leafgreen was useful for Mystery Dungeon. Why? All those Pokemon still learned the same moves. You could easily buy a guide for a game you didn't even have and still use it. First Diamond and Pearl thing I ever owned was a damn book, the games came later.

It was never one thing that prevented Digimon from catching on, it's a series of little hiccups that snowballed into it being harder to get into initially than its cousins, and thus, less popular.

...at least Digimon's had a better ride than Monster Rancher and Spectrobes. Poor Suezo.

Spectrobes was destined for failure, being both cool and attached to Disney. It was never going to catch on or become a thing, these are the same people that held Kingdom Hearts at a mile's length up until recently despite it quite literally being the key to several dozen oh-so coveted demographics they love to chase... but not really. What the fuck is their marketing team being paid for? I'd fire each and every one of them and for good measure, actually light them on fire like Zeus if I were their boss.

Disney, for a very long time, wanted to stay in their lane of being the foremost children/family entertainment media empire. It's only relatively recently that they tried expanding out of that niche, but tried to do so in like, three different mutually exclusive ways that ended up making them as a company completely corrosive to anything they touch.

Okay, no joke, I love Dawn/Dusk and yeah, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good Digimon RPG, but I always add the asterisk of my playtime being at a grand total of 231 hours before I'd managed to beat the game, not even the postgame, just the game itself. A single playthrough of Digimon World Dawn exceeds the numerical value of which a Pokemon Emerald copy can COUNT. Your Emerald clock would stop functioning if you played it for the same amount of time that Digimon World Dawn just expects you to play. Casually. Game took me years to complete.
>>
>>82003308
Oh yeah, Dawn/dusk is a LONG ass game. Most of it's not filler, though there is some stuff that they could do better (A minimap would cut multiple hours off an average playthrough)

Game doesn't fuck around. It's very "sink or swim." If you screw up on a Digimon, you just have to push through your mistake and grind up for a better guy that can hopefully help you with whatever you're stuck on. A lot of bosses are sudden stonewalls that will crush your team that otherwise steamrolls through most other obstacles. But again, 10/10 game.
>>
>>82003308
>a grand total of 231 hours before I'd managed to beat the game, not even the postgame, just the game itself
What? I beat Dusk in 3 or 4 days. Though, I must admit that the early zones filtered me hard at first, even though I had played World DS (which I guess you didn't).

>>82003349
>But again, 10/10 game.
I agree with everything but this. As great as it feels to beat the game, it's lacks memorable human characters, plus the music and maps are only just good enough to not make you go crazy from doing the fetch quests. It's a game you play for the digimon all the way- be it the NPCs or your own team/farm. As such, I cannot give it a 10/10 score.

I haven't made time for Lost Evolution but I've been told those aspects are less lacking in that game. If so, it's a shame it didn't get translated back in the day, THEN it could have given Pokémon a run for its money (this was probably the reason, if the assumption in >>>/a/287085766 is correct).

>BAMCO and TOEI keep it that way so they keep getting bribe money from TPC (The Pokémon Company) for sabotaging the projects. There is not other explanation for how they treat the franchise. I honestly believe Time Stranger was mostly done in secret, which explains why it basically came out of nowhere.

Also, to be clear, I am not the anon you were responding to. And final note: though I greatly prefer most of the digimon you encounter in Dusk, finding out that Tailmon/Gatomon lives in your room in the Dawn version instead of Phascomon made me very upset- they should have at least made it so it was Black Tailmon/Gatomon in Dusk to make it fair.
>>
>>82003622
It just held my interest longer and more consistently than most other RPGs. I played it whenever I could, on the dumper or when I was on the bus, over the course of several years. Admittedly there were times I forgot where I was going or what I was doing, but I didn't use a guide and tried my best to finish it as naturally as I could. All of its flaws in-mind, a big reason I still give it a perfect 10 is simply because I was never bored enough to the point I put it away and never looked back. I bought it in 2018, finished it in 2025, and it was better than most RPGs, I'd say. Yeah, the human characters weren't memorable, I don't really give a fuck what happened in it, but in a world where people treat 10s as "yes, play this one," I'd say, "yes, play this one."

The stuff created by and enjoyed by japs will always have something a little odd or off about it, especially the media, as in movies, books. art..
It's not so much that it's childish or autistic or "gay" even, it's that, like in the cute, happy kawaii little thing here squeezing off a bunch of flesh-tearing rounds into a crowd or whatever it's supposed to be doing, Japan will like juxtapose a lot of different, disparate things with one another in a single thing, or in a single image.
Or they'll feature some freak oddity or some person's bizarre characterological trait in the same scene as like "childhood nostalgia" for a jap.
A lot of Japanese media, t's like you're witnessing someone having a mental breakdown in real time, but instead of becoming a violent asshole or a useless junkie, he's got pens and an artist's pad.

Mostly just gonna point out stuff that happened back in the day, since early growth is the best growth for long-term franchises.
1. Normalfags don't like how something can evolve then devolve, then evolve again, and they hated it more when they realized a talking cat can become a busty angel. Also because of how random a lot of the digivolutions are, it doesn't give that appealing "my baby's growing up" vibe that other monster-catching games have.
2. Digimon aren't very "toyetic" and are very rigid and metal, and really only work as action figures (at a time when kids were already loaded with action figures), meaning there's no free money by having billions of women buy all your stuffed animals.
3. The names are a lot harder to remember due to slapping "metal" and "X" and whatever else all over the place, on top of not having the whole "bulbasaur = bulb & saur" or "sudowoodo = pseudo & wood" thing to help with names. Plus, Digimon don't just sit around saying their own names all the time like Pokemon do.
4. IIRC, the Digimon talking ended up turning off a lot of normalfags.
5. Pokemania.
6. Pokemon had that "kid goes on an adventure with his pet(s)" vibe, which everyone can pretty much relate to, both in the anime and the games. Digimon was practically "just" an anime, with all the same anime tropes as any other anime, at a time when anime wasn't really THAT big yet.
7. Super inconsistent games on random platforms with random genres.
8. The anime had a fuckload of padding and reused animations (mostly the digivolution scenes). This in particular pissed me off, and I know others who felt the same way at the time.
9. Demons and angels at a time when soccer moms ruled the TV.
10. Some kids got annoyed by literally every Digimon's name ending with "mon". I remember kids finding it cringe at my elementary school.
11. Didn't (doesn't) have a cute mascot like Pikachu to pull people in.

Could probably keep going.
>inb4 some social media addict wants a TL;DR

>Digimon talking ended up turning off a lot of normalfags

TL;DR? :^)
But really, I think Digimon's main problems for most people to get into are 1 (especially the part of the busty angel turning off a lot of potential women and people who wanted to have monster-like friends), 3 (I'm not a big Digimon nerd so whenever I want to remember my favorite Digimon I have too look up its name on wikis until I find it), 7, and the problems with the anime that 6 and 8 point out
I think they could have rivaled Pokémon if they had done things better, but at least now they still have a chance since people are hating how sloppy and low quality new Pokémon games are more than ever
>>
>>82045274
i think pokemon is the most popular for being the most kiddy/innofensive thing ever
All the "messed up" parts are on screen dialog or implied and nothing more
they tried serious stories before but that usually fails for them, pokemon writers are awful
>>
>>82045665
Personally, I think it's mostly because the games are just made to introduce new Pokémon to sell merch of and to put in the anime
They rely on the anime to make people like them since they can actually give a personality to Pokémon there instead of using those stiff 3D models
>>
>>82046095
i have no idea if the pokemon anime has ever been popular after the first season
But it makes sense that most get into pokemon from watching it
>>
>>82048534
I don't think the games are generating many new Pokémon fans considering how outdated and simple they are
You could play a Pokémon game from 2 decades ago like Platinum and still get the same experience you would from a new game when it comes to gameplay (and it's not like anyone praises Pokémon games for their stories)
