I have been to Osaka, Himeji, Hakone, Hiroshima, Iga-Ueno, Nijo (in Kyoto), and a couple of other ex-castle grounds. It's just going to be Himeji for me, truly *the* archetype Japanese castle no matter how much of a default NPC answer that is. It isn't even overcrowded anywhere close to what Osaka is like anyway

hi frens, i plan on going to jp for the first time mid march (around the 13th) for either 7 or 10 days, haven't figured it out yet. i have a few questions though

>should i stick with Tokyo the entire trip? is it really that massive?

>can i pull off a daytrip? i've seen Miyajima thrown around a lot but doesn't seem like there's much there besides that one massive shrine? any suggestions? i'm open to anything but i want something that will be memorable

>how much do you think my expenses will be once I get the housing/plane tickets out of the way? at the moment, it looks like my plane tickets will be $1k. I wanted to keep it to $2k-2.5k, maybe $3k depending on how much a hotel/bnb is. Is that feasible? I don't want to make my budget too strict when I'm there.

thanks anonsssss ~
>>
>>2750446
>should i stick with Tokyo the entire trip? is it really that massive?
no. you can easily spend that much time there, but you should visit at least kyoto as well.
>can i pull off a daytrip? i've seen Miyajima thrown around [...]
as in miyajima island? that next to hiroshima and thus a far way off from tokyo. it's very beautiful and has multiple places worth visiting, but I feel like there are equally good places nearby
>how much do you think my expenses will be once I get the housing/plane tickets out of the way?
you can spend anywhere from very little to a very large amount. If you only sleep in bunk rooms in hostels, you can probably average on 20-25 bucks for the night. Similarly if you only eat stuff from convenience stores and cheaper food places you can probably spend a similar amount daily for food.
I wouldn't cheap out on the food tho. Convenience store for breakfast and then whatever you feel like eating

that's kinda short but for a first trip, may be better to see a bit more than just tokyo
- if you stick to Tokyo (which isn't a "bad" choice anyway and you got plenty to do/see there) then you could also stay a couple of nights somewhere like hakone (national park, onsens, fuji views)
- alternatively, stay half the trip in Tokyo and then take the shinkansen over to kansai to go to Kyoto/Osaka for a few days too

>day trips
forget miyajima (lol) unless you are going to stay there/ stay in Hiroshima
some day trips from Tokyo: kawaguchiko (best fuji view), hakone, kamakura (temples - something like a local alternative to kyoto), yokohama (another city if you are so inclined)

>budget
food is much cheaper than the west especially eating out, transport can be expensive if you are moving regions but the metros/local trains aren't too bad. attractions, museums, entrance fees are generally a magnitude cheaper for things too unless you are doing Disney or pokemon kind of slop
i think 2.5k is more than enough if -1k for flight

I have social anxiety and I'm kind of scared entering a restaurant alone because of the language barrier and not knowing what to do. Any advice? I've only been going to ticket vending machines like ramen restaurants and Yoshinoya because they require little human interaction and they usually have English.

Probably best to stick to Tokyo. There's more than enough to do for 1 week. Miyajima's not close to Tokyo. Inter-city travel can be expensive for your budget.

Nagoya is nice, especially the main residence, Matsumoto is great and one of the last 10 original castles, but Kumamoto is my favourite. Awesome castle.
>>
>>2750474
Might depend on where you are. In Tokyo, most restaurants have enough English. Some have kiosks you order on. Some have tablets with English. Some have paper English menus. Most staff spoke at least a little English.

I went into restaurants and if I didn't see an obvious way to order, I just said "Hello, is English OK?"

It's mostly just the old-fashioned-looking ones that have trouble with English. Syukudo/oden type restaurants.
>>
>>2750481
>>2750492
>>2750497
It's nerve wracking to me because every restaurant has its own system. Like, how am I suppose to know that I'm suppose to sit down at a seat at Sukiya and Yoshinoya and order from the tablet? If I was a tourist entering Japan for the first time, I would look like an idiot standing at the door waiting to be seated. How am I suppose to know that I have to order from the ticket machine before heading inside a ramen restaurant and Matsuya? I would look silly entering the restaurant and then have to head outside again to order. I only know how these places work because I watch YouTube videos and read Google reviews to see if there's an English menu and if a foreigner has written a review explaining the order process. I just want to try some delicious Japanese food without looking like an idiot :( I know I am a tourist and I will never ever see people again, but the embarrassment and memory will stay with me forever...
>>
>>2750503
Thanks for this, I think exposure to this more often will help me overcome this anxiety
>>
>>2750446
>should i stick with Tokyo the entire trip?
>is it really that massive?
For 10 days, yes
>can i pull off a daytrip?
Popular and very manageable day trips from Tokyo are Kamakura, Enoshima, Hakone, Akiruno
>i've seen Miyajima thrown around
Not doable from Tokyo
>how much do you think my expenses will be once I get the housing/plane tickets out of the way?
Depends on if you want to eat restaurant food (800-2500 yen dependin on type, size, options)
There are cheap chain restaurants all over Japan. For a comprehendable comparison a big mac set goes for 650 yen in the morning and 750 the rest of the day. At dinnertime through breakfast, you can buy a double meat big mac for 950 yen.
750 yen equals 4,6€ or $4.75 (at the time of writing)
That said travel in Tokyo is affordable but I'd reserve at least 250, preferrably double depending on where you want to go for day trips etc., real money for that.
Souvenirs etc is entrirely up to your own
>at the moment, it looks like my plane tickets will be $1k. I wanted to keep it to $2k-2.5k, maybe $3k depending on how much a hotel/bnb is. Is that feasible?
For 7 to 10 days yeah absolutely
My spending money (read: plane and hotels excluded) budget for 3 weeks is around 3k€ and I don't travel like a peasant so you should be able to manage 10 days on 3k just fine
>>
>>2750505
Just stand around and observe the other food fags ordering first.I do that, or ask the staff for help
>>
>>2750505

get yourself a conbini alcohol of choice, then get two more of those. Drink promptly now. Then go do whatever you were anxious about. Do this a few times and you are cured. You're welcome. I personally cheap out on hotels and get the cheapest shit. I'll capsule it out most nights and maybe get a nice hotel if I catch a last minute booking deal. You can get awesome room filling deals if you have the nerve to book last minute. I swear by it. Hate being tied down to a spot and booking shit in advance. I'm so tired by the end of the day that it barely matters where I crash and unlike other parts of the world everything is tolerably clean and safe. If it has a shower (or shared bath) and bed it's good enough.
>can i pull off a daytrip?
I recommend it fren. It's a nice change of pace to get out of Tokyo and into a smaller more relaxed setting. I always burn my first few high energy days in Tokyo, running around doing everything then take a nice trip out to some smaller town/city. Stay the night there so you have more time. Travel back on late evenings: less people, more time spent at your destinations, and more comfy. A nice relaxed onsen town is the best after burning out in Tokyo for me.

if you realize how easy it is to interact with people hammered you will soon realize you are perfectly capable of doing it sober. For most people, it's about taking that initial huge step of breaking away from the fear of interaction. No alcohol needed after most of the time

Matsumoto's black design looked cool, while Osaka is clearly the most ornate of those three and very impressive, probabaly a clear best if not for the absolute horde of people at all times.

I've stuck to capsules since you always get some sort of bathing option and private space to go horizontal. The fancier ones even have private showers within a common bathing room. Never tried out netcafes with how low you can catch a decent capsule place

Decent assessment. I managed to get a match last night with a chubby 31 year old (I'm 20) and even planned a date but when she asked for my picture, she didn't send one back and ended up unmatching. Got two more later but idk. I just need the confidence of pulling once so I know it's possible. I speak too desperately and I just don't know what I'm doing. Probably won't try anymore, at least in Nagasaki because I'm not here long enough, still have another week in Tokyo. Also holy FUCK umeshu is good. Haha yeah, that totally works for everyone, haha, foolproof. The alcohol totally made interaction fine, haha.
It makes me even more of a relaxed goof among friends and acquaintances, but doesn't help for strangers. I assure you it wasn't from a lack of amount drunk either.
Also its weird im not complete autist mode or don't do anything (been to tons of events and concerts in tokyo), but i do not interact with anyone if i can help it. people make me stressed.

I use it, sparingly. Once, I had a lot of time to kill, and I contemplated walking from Chiba near the baseball stadium to Roppongi. I think it was 20 something km. I didn't look to bad, but I forgot to repurchase my internet sim, so I figured I would probably go down a lot of deadends and have to backtrack without a map and it would get too late.

My JP kinda sucks & I went to an inaka my 1st trip and I didn't have much fun so I am mostly looking at cities. Is it worth spending 2-3 days in Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Nagoya, or Sendai, or should I just stick to Tokyo/Kansai?

The general history. The novelty and familiarity at the same time. The general mindset of stoic, process-oriented collectivism. The juxtaposition of spirituality and modernization. The walkability and extensive public transport in the cities. The fun challenges that come with being a foreigner in an ethnocentric, nationalist country. Also the kawaii culture: it was neat visiting the Haniwa exhibit in the Tokyo National Museum and hearing the locals comment on what are basically burial statues as ”かわいい”.

I went for the first time because I was a weeb. I keep coming back because it's just pretty pleasant. I live just outside of NYC and work in a high stress job. I lobe big cities, but everything near NYC feels like it's just sorta held together with duct tape or exists only to exact $300+ from you. Japan as a tourist (whether in a huge city like Tokyo or Osaka, a mid sized city like Hiroshima, or even some rural places) is just retardedly convenient. Totally random Japanese people have done random kindnesses that I've never even had friends do for me here in the U.S., whether here, the midwest, or the south. I'll usually plan the trip to go to a concert or something, then spend the rest of the trip just wander around the country and it's always been fun.

So shortsighted.. how can you call yourself a traveler but you don’t enjoy a road trip? All my best travels have been road trips. Driving and hitting views and nature hikes through the Japanese alps, trying local rural cuisine, experiencing a completely different traffic system, getting away from the tourists too scared to drive in a foreign country. Sipping a beer in a camping chair after a nice day zipping about <_<

Life is about being at the right place at the right time. Now I’ve got the place, I’ve got the time, and it’s up to me to make it fun. I forgot, no one here travels for fun. ITS SERIOUS BUSINESS >_>

One dude thinks I’m transporting too much, another thinks I’m gonna sit in one Tokyo district for 6 days. Another thinks one afternoon in an aquarium means you can’t enjoy a nice dinner, concert, and late night out drinking. It’s hilarious. It’d be really hilarious if it wasn’t so sad <_<

Enjoy showing up to Japan and staying in a box on the outskirts of town because a little planning ahead was too much of a burden for you. You’ll love doing that in Kyotourist for 11 days >_>

Some love hotels that are comparable to leisure hotels offer a plan for consecutive nights, but otherwise, you need to check out once with your luggage and check in again at night.

Just to be the devil's advocate...

I can't see these carts being any more disruptive than the drivers that put their hazards on and then stop while still mostly being in a traffic lane. That is very inconvenient to other drivers.

As for the danger, I agree that it is risky. But so is riding your bike on the road. Or what about these people that just cross the road without waiting to see if the car that's coming is going to stop? Apparently people don't abide by the lug nut rule here.

And the noise issue; they are noisy, but so are all the anime shops that blast music at you as you walk by.

In the end, I do see where you're coming from, and I did not take into account how annoying the karts are for folks that live and work here.

But they are ridiculously fun. Maybe you should try them?

>>day 1+2
>Tokyo
No time to recover from the jet lag? No time reserved for adjusting to Japan on your (presumably) first trip?
>>day 3 + 4
>Rent car till Kyoto, camping near mt. Fuji
Personally I wouldn't because the public transport is probably cheaper, but it is also 1) convenient, 2) the drivers know the signs and what not and 3) the drivers aren't going on jet lagged, sleep deprivated, confused in a foreign environment fucking aimless drive. But that's just my recommendation
>>day 5
>Matsumoto
Cool castle
>>day 6
>Shirakawago
Cool place but touristy as hell
>>day 7
>Seki (sword tiem)
>>day 8-11
>Kyoto
4 days in Kyoto is a lot but very little at the same time. I'd probably just stay in Osaka and do a daytrip or two to Kyoto to cover the most important sights.
>>day 12-13
>Osaka
See above
>>day 14-16
>Seoul (why not)
Why?
>> day 17-23
>Ueno, Tokyo
Ueno is great and all but probably not enough for 6 full days. I'd recommend a visit to the Imperial palace at least. Akihabara and the National museum require at least a full day both
>>
>>2751302
They made it worse so certain tourists would be incentivized to look for other destinations than Kyoto. That's the official excuse IIRC
OF course keeping it as is and excluding the Tokaido would have accomplished the goal better, now the majority of people just pay cash for the Kyoto ride and refuse to venture further
>>
Will there be a gajin tax or ban coming in the next few years? I really want to get a visit in this year or next year
>>
Is going to Japan in July/august really that bad? Is there less crowds in touristy areas?
>>
I’ve got a 9-hour layover at Narita coming up. If I do one thing in Tokyo, what should it be?
>>
>>2751478
Narita is shit because it's far away from Tokyo, but if you want to sink the 1,5h one way to have 4-5 hours realistically in Tokyo I'd start by asking if anything interests you? Temples or shrines? A specific ward, street or street corner, alley etc.? A specific dish? Weeb merch? Sports merch?
>>
>>2751448
Asakusa was originally a place where you could buy traditional things. Recently, there are more and more stores selling ridiculous fakes for tourists, but there are still stores selling the real thing.
Also, you can buy yukata anywhere in Japan as summer approaches. They start being sold at Uniqlo and Shimamura.
>>
>>2751401
>he drinks the hotel tea
I feel bad for the sad Philipino who has to shuffle through that trash to sort it in to moeru and moenai, and all the other shit that they want you to recycle separately.
Anyway I think they consoom way more, what with every single thing being triple wrapped in plastic at least
>>
>>2751319
Most chain restaurants and stores will take card in Tokyo but you need to be prepared for smaller places that don't, the further out you go from Tokyo the more likely they wont take card.

>>2751477
Most tourists to japan are from nearby countries that are already familiar with hot weather (Australia, China etc) so no
>>
>>2751478
3p soap, then some food and buy a few snacks for the next leg of the flight.

Lol no. What the fuck are you even doing in Akihabara ?
>>
>>2751496
trvke, go on youtube shorts in the early afternoon (JST) on a weekday until you find a livestream, then click on that and scroll so you'll only be looking at live content. You will see countless japanese men using vtuber avatars with a couple dozen viewers, and as the amount of these you encounter approaches infinity, you will find the percentage of them playing fortnite approaches 50%.

I went to a night club gambling on whether I would like a featured artist, it was kind of ass. This club changes drastically daily, would it be ok to go again the next night? I don’t know proper etiquette
>>
>>2751401
You realise third worlders wash their underwear inside kettles?
>>
>>2751481
Yeah, it’s not ideal. That’s why I’m trying to source a singular “thing” from the crowd. Not that interested in merch, more of an activities guy.
I like the Yakuza games so I could always visit Kabukicho, but I’ll be there in daytime so I’m not sure if that’s worthwhile.
>>2751486
Too much of a retarded faggot for sex tourism, sorry
>>
Anyone know nice (not over expensive) restaurants or bars with majestic nightly city views over Tokyo? Preferably rooftops or otherwise tall building.
>>
>>2751489
Miku is in fortnite too!
>>
>>2751526
Kabukicho is still awesome in the daytime. I would say its better. Dumb niggers always chasing me and bothering me. Just give them an assertive no if they come by you
>>
>>2751535
I only went there once. But what seemed to work for me, to get them to leave me alone, is when they would be saying, I know the best bar in the red light district, or something to that affect, I'd say, you call this a red light district, and then laugh hysterically, as if I've seen everything under the sun, even though I'm from a small farming community in the Midwest.
>>
they sill sell mp3 players in japan? I'm thinking of getting a sony walkman but fuck apple music is pretty valuable
>>
>>2751477
Summer in Japan is indeed hot and humid as hell, but the nights are fun with fireworks displays, bon dances, and various festivals taking place all over the country.

What is this thing for? I’m just going to use it as a place to put my worn socks and underwear.
>>
>>2751543
Shut the fuck up faggot. It's 80 degrees for most of the summer, and gets up to about 90 for a month.
>>

Zona Norte... now THAT'S a red light district
>>

It's for preventing the spread of bed bugs. You put your luggage bag on it.
>>
>>2751544
it's a luggage rack. you can place your bag at a more comfortable height
>>
>>2751549
Most hookers are slaves right. Can you buy their papers, and have them work for you knitting sweaters, or perhaps a bakery.
>>
>>2751141
>lake toya
i might be there in a few days i'll go on a date with you UwU
>>
>>2751558
In this economy... yeah sweater cost more than sex.

I’m gonna try going to a girls bar tonight before meeting with some friends. I’m debating between a regular one with a mix of girls or a concept one where they’re all dressed up in outfits. Wish me luck, anons.
>>
>>2751482
Based off that knowledge, i should really go to Uniqlo or the other during my time in april. No chance i want to get scammed or price gouged at asakusa for being white. Thanks.
>>
>>2751565
A hand knitted wool sweater in Ireland is about two hundred dollars. Depending on many factors, like if they come from Bangledesh, the ladies I emancipate will have good lives.
>>
>>2751567
good luck. how's your japanese? I'm hoping my conversational japanese gets good enough for me to go into one of these on my next trip.
