How did Mace Windu manage to beat Palpatine 1v1?

But Palpatine proceeds to kill him, which then in Anakin's mind, seals his own fate. What I'm saying here is that there are multiple layers of meaning going on. Mace in this scene, represents the Jedi Order committing another tragic error. They've literally been failing the entire time up till then because they couldn't figure out Palpatine was the Sith.
