By modern standards even Ned Stark is a shitty father who murders her daughter's dog and then makes her burry it. In middle ages many kings barely interacted with their own children. They were often sent away to live in another castle. Sometimes they were basically imprisoned, because the king feared his enemies will overthrow him and put the son on the throne instead.His problem wasn't that he was too harsh to his children. It's the opposite. The children were too spoilt and behaved irresponsibly when the only thing that was required from them was to behave in the family's interest. But Jaime joins the Kingsguard which forbids him to marry. Wtf is wrong with him. Cercei can't even make few stupid Baratheon babies. She just needs to have incest babies. And it's not even like she's so loyal to Jaime. She has no problem fucking the sparrow cousin. And then there's the midget. He's disappointing just by the fact he was born.

Tywin was retarded in one aspect only, he confused Lannister legacy with legacy of Tywin Lannister. He actively prevented his own children from prospering and kept them under his hill, because he didn't want Lannisters to win, he wanted Tywin Lannister to win and everyone to know it was Tywin Lannister who built the king dynasty of Lannisters. I don't even think he even feinted ignorance, he just didn't realize he's a narcissist and coped by beating his children into believing that if he prospers the house Lannister prospers. It was his single Achilles heel that resulted in him dying in the shitter.
