Anyway SEELE wants to retain their own individual souls and rule the new world and its mass of Tang as godlike beings. Shinji's dad, the director of NERV, has his own plans to hijack the Third Impact and reunite himself with his dead wife he is obsessed with. He wants them to combine into a single godlike being to rule over the broken earth and the Tang. But Shinji's mom had her own plan, which is why she allowed herself to be swallowed up into unit 01. She wants everyone to be dissolved into Tang but allow them the freedom to reform themselves into their own individuals when they're ready. Her plan is what ultimately happens. She's the sole human being who is not formed into Tang because she's stuck in unit 01.Oh and I forgot to mention that while the Angels were drawn to their parent they can't actually tell the difference between Adam and Lilith so they keep trying to make their way to Lilith in Japan. Adam, which had been reverted into an alien fetus somehow, wasn't located in Japan until Shinji's dad removes him from Antarctica part way through the series. So when one of the Angels (Kaworu, a human clone containing the soul of Adam) actually breaks into Terminal Dogma where Lilith is held he's surprised to not see his original body there instead. Shinji's kills Kaworu before he can unit with Adam and start the Third Impact on the Angel's terms, which would just kill all life on earth except for them. It's Rei (technically the third Rei, she had died twice prior) who eventually starts the Third Impact by uniting with her original body, Lilith.
In the foreground you have the last vestiges of humanity defending itself from aliens who want to connect with the body of another Angel found years ago. In the background its about three kids dealing with various forms of depression, puberty, and discovering their self-worth. They have to decide what it is they're fighting for because there is also a scientist who's built his life trying to harness the power of that alien I'd mentioned. From fucking around with the alien they not only nearly destroyed the world, not only killed the scientist's wife, but also accidentally sent a beacon out that told the other aliens to come to Earth. The Scientist spends the next fourteen years using what he's discovered to build defenses against those aliens and has made it so every child born during that beacon can potentially be used to pilot these defenses known as EVA's.

Ok to all the Mad Men Afficionados out there. And I know there's a lot of you. I watched this show start-finish more than 5 times but there are still a few things I don't fully understand:1. What was the whole deal between Pete and Bob Benson? What was that speech "I've messed with people like you before (meaning Don) and I want to apologize"? And what actually happened to his mother?2. Why was Roger so frugal with his daughter? He had no problem spending thousands on trips and women but he seemed to be stingy with his daughter? Or am I misreading it and she was a brat?3. What was the deal with Don chasing the woman who looked like Rachel Menkin? Are they hinting that rachel was the only woman he truly loved? What was the deal with his Italian neighbor? did he feel anything for her?4. What about Megan? The only time he shows any emotion for her is when she leaves the hotel after their fight? Did he actually love her? Did he truly love anyone?5. What was the deal with the Pvt's lighter? Why did he actually throw it away? Why did he imagine him dead when he got high in California? Wtf was all that?6. Wtf is up with his pregnant niece? That whole line made no sense to me. He literally tried to kiss her and then that whole trip at the end and then she just leaves him there? Just what was going on?7. Why did Don never show any guilt over his brother's death? Also Lane's death? Yes he's an alcoholic but he shows signs of guilt over much less stuff like when Sally caught him with the neighbor?

Him accidentally taking the Pvts lighter was like God poking him in the ribs to come to terms with his past. Same with imagining him getting high. He probably tried not to think about this kid probably being dead in another war. 6. Don learned how to have platonic relationships with women through Peggy, his niece, and his daughter. He goes a little too far with leaning on her to be his only family and he tags along at a moment she needed to be alone. She leaves and he finally faces himself. 7. He shows lots of guilt for both of those deaths but the story of Don is all about running from yourself, telling new stories, pretending things never happened. I would recommend you rewatch the series sometime knowing where everyone ends up and you'll have all new answers to these questions.
