So when Aegon pins the badge on him it kind of makes sense.In the show Aegon has pretty much no relation to Criston, only Aemond does. And show Criston is a shadow of his book self, he's a quiet seething conniving thug who doesn't convince anyone of anything. Aegon pinning the badge of him only makes Aegon look retarded, which now that I'm thinking about it was probably the writers' intention.This show is already suffering from the same problems of GOT S5-S6. When those seasons were airing nearly everyone loved it because of the production values and spectacle so they were convinced the writing must have been great too - but over time some normies started expressing doubt that something felt a bit off. They couldn't pinpoint why, but really it was because of the hundreds of minor writing mistakes that accumulated together to ruin the story. Of course some people noticed these creative errors initially and were called haters or elitists, but years later everyone "woke up" and realized in retrospect that yeah GoT had actually been shitting itself since S5, not S8.This same "wakeup call" among viewers will happen with HOTD too. Not sure when but it will, even normies will one day look back and realize the constant baffling creative decisions have been dragging the show down since the last few episodes of S1. Then once everyone wakes up they'll agree the rot had been there almost from the start, even though right now you get called a hater for pointing it out. Only HOTD seems to have a better acting lineup than late GOT, so the wakeup call might take a bit longer because normies often conflate good acting with good writing (see: that Otto scene).

Why not just take kings landing? As soon as Luke was confirmed murdered send out letters to all the houses that Luke was murdered as a messenger by the greens, send a rider to Harrenhal to distract the hot blooded Aemond, send Otto to the wall or execution for usurping the throne, put Aegon Aemond and Allicent in custody, possibly have Allicent executed as well, allow some kind of adoption for Aegons children while he remains under house arrest.
