I have to believe the Fox censors just never got the joke in time to veto it. That’s the only reason it slipped into a TV-14 primetime broadcast show.
That or Hurwitz put in an even raunchier joke that the censors shot down so that one could sneak through.

Her being mean allowed the writers to write some grate stuff. I think my favourite one was the Nelly episode where Michael asks about "her" and Lucille gets giddy and says something like "You call him that too? I'm so glad we can talk like this", and even made me a little sad that Lucille was desperate to connect with one of her children, but nobody was mean enough to qualify lol.

Simpsons did it before them with Hans Moleman and Duckman did it even earlier with Fluffy and Uranus.

>>200674804
If you do watch it, watch the original version of season 4, and not the recut they put out later. They did it to try and make it flow more like the original show, but at least half of the setup and payoff of jokes in the season comes from you seeing scenes without full context until you follow a different character later on, so a lot more of it just falls flat in the recut.
>>
>>200674804
Yes, avoid like the plague.

S4 is awful, and while the original version is better than the re-cut, it's still vastly inferior than S1-3. S5 is bad in comparison too, but it has its moments, and I'd argue it's better than S4.

S4 is on par with S3. Just make sure like the other anons said that you watch the original cut - on Netflix it's hidden under extras (which also makes it viewable without an account last I checked) - bevause the recut is awful. And skip S5, some of the worst TV I've ever seen.

Don't listen to that guy, S4 is bad. So many of us wish we had heed, but now it's too late. S1-3 is the best comedy series ever made, and clearly will stay that way for decades. Watching S4 will only soil your memory.

Some of the best bits are in S4. It's a step down from S1/2, but so was all the MRF plotline in S3.

He was only in one episode of the original run, so he was just a funny guest star.

I always loved the underplaying of song parodies that they make for the show. They're always playing in the background of a scene, and you could just not notice them and think it's a real song if you weren't paying attention.

Might be a pun on eggplant parmesan, as eggplants are sometimes called aubergines (pronounced aw-ber-jeenz).
But the joke is more in his shitty disguises, ability to always show up right as he's needed/mentioned, and Lucille (who's normally so cruel) genuinely losing her shit every time she sees him.

I can't believe no one said Trailer Park Boys. Granted the humor is nowhere near as smart as Arrested Development, but the early seasons had some great jokes and the running gags were thoughtfully tended to. I always got a kick out of the subtle explanation for Ricky and his damn lists being a throwaway joke on the third season or maybe fourth where Bubbles explained that Ricky learned to read from the instruction lists off the back of microwave dinners.

You're not wrong, but AD was lightning in a bottle. The original run excels over every other sitcom too.
>>200675847
You're out of your mind. The Mr. F stuff stood out in a bad way because it was too ridiculous, but it comes nowhere close to the trash plot lines in S4 that reeked of "How do you do, fellow kids?" like Maharis, Maeby's hideous look and hairstyle, Lindsey the politician, the musical, and other awful narratives like George Michael trying to be smooth, father and son competing for the same women, Tobias' emaciated friends, etc. It was a dumpster fire.

S5 tried to salvage what it could, but everything was already ruined, yet it came up with some wonderful moments I won't spoil for the few dumbasses that refuse to avoid S4+5, because they are the few rewards you get for suffering through that crap.

They are built on a sound-stage in a studio (which can have several sets). It stays there until the series is completed. When it's done or cancelled, the sets are thrown out, sold, or stored, depending on circumstances.
>or is it rebuilt to make space for others between seasons
That would be extremely impractical, since usually seasons are produced continuously, it's just the production process is not "seen" in the airing.
>>200683915
Arrested Development has the best used soundtrack I've ever seen in a sitcom, and it's not even close. What they did is SO rare, I've yet to see it again since.

I love the first three seasons of AD (I suggested the Mrs Featherbottom fall earlier as the funniest moment - kept rewinding and falling about when I first saw it), and I'd probably rate it as the best sitcom ever... but there are a few bong comedies that do either or both of those things very well. The wordplay in Yes Minister is superb, for instance - though it's unlike AD in almost every other respect (it even has a laugh track). Spaced might come the closest to rivalling it, as it's (still) hilarious, they packed a lot into the show, and there are plenty of running gags ("Hello, Brian..."). But it's still has a very different feel (for one thing, the characters are all somewhat likeable/relatable, whereas that's maybe only true of Michael and George Michael in AD).
