Fantastic gameplay, mostly tactical/shooter stuff but there's usually some very well executed additional mechanics that reward creative people and are consistently interesting.
Story is usually batshit insane, character-driven but a lot of bizarre supernatural stuff. Cutscenes that go on way too long and contain a bizarre mix of po-faced and irony-laden stuff. Incredibly self-indulgent but the good parts of it are usually so good that you can forgive the sillier elements.
