They prematurely kill off Carl because the actor turned 18 and was going to start getting paid as an adult (spoilers, but you shouldn't watch anyway), and the show never had a backup plan. They try to make it interesting with the Whisperers and time jumps but ultimately the show has no goals and has no idea what it wants to do post Carl so they started flinging shit at the walls and having multiple spin offs to try and find it's purpose.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan was supposedly pissed because the Negen storyline heavily involved Carl and with him dead they had no idea what to do with Negen. Supposedly Morgan claimed he never would have signed on if he knew Carl was going to die since Morgan actually liked the comics.The show has been fucked behind the scenes since they fired Darabont. Hell, they killed Glenn off prematurely and had to bring him back due to backlash since his actual comic death was very important for major plot lines.

I rewatched 1-3 quite a few times, 1-5 about twice.. and only saw 6-9 like once.. I stopped watching around the time they met those people who wear zombie masks or whatever. It just became a different show and very pointless.
