It's not a turbine, it's a retrothruster. It doesn't need to be round.

>>200695074
It can't rotate as a turbine if it's in half. Makes no sense. What's even the point of it being round at all?
>>

Then why make them twice as large for the original?

>>
>>200695114
Plus when the wings are connected there's still a half divider in there that keeps it from being round inside. Glad I have never seen the new movies other than force awakens (which sucked)
>>
>>200695149
The top half is still round. That now makes no sense as there's no way for anything to rotate inside. They are semicircle turbines.

Smart move, but also utterly uselessly stupid.
>>
>>200694958
It only looks better since it's based on the Joe Johnston sketches that later became the Z-95 Headhunter. Concept art almost always looks better than the final product, just like how aircraft prototypes look better than production models since they are the essence of the design before the feature creep and bloat kicks in.

Rian is a hack that didn't understand the Death Star trench run was an allegory for the Dambusters skip bombing barrel bombs into a dam without being literal in the visual choreography. So he wanted to do his own WW2 bombing scene with the result being the MG-100s ripping off the B-17 even in their "fortress" name, and was directly responsible for making the Fulminatrix Dreadnought as flat as possible with guns only on the dorsal surface to facilitate his two dimensional thinking.

It would be far more economical to make a fleet of specialist ships. The side profile is where it goes off the rails into being overdesigned, though it does let the strike foil be a single thickness when closed with the upper wing as the rear section and lower wing as the front section. Basically the T-70 looks far better if it was a Z-95 with a fixed wing instead of splitting as an X-wing.

Just realized why; in OG concept art, the rear 4 engines are off-centered to account for S-foils being deployed.

Z-95 OG does not take this into account, so it just looks bad.

For not having a turbine it sure does show one in your picture. This is what happens when mechanical designs are made by people who don't understand mechanical designs.

It takes them like 15 minutes to go all the way across the galaxy in TLJ to get to the casino planet.

>allegory for the Dambusters
Partially. But it's also inspired by a film featuring a bunch of RAF Mosquitoes flying down a Norwegian fjord to hit a German facility at the far end (or rather bury it under a rockfall.)
>>
>>200694958
No, they took the x-wing and marred the design by making it 'sleeker'. That was the only thing the 50 yr old cat lady told the male concept artist. "Uh make it sleeker, no that isn't sleek enough". But it's in space, ma'am...
Amateur concept artists continually pump out amazing top notch designs. EC Henry for example. Wanna see an Imperial LAAT? Holy shit look at this

It's obviously a retro thruster with an electromagnetic gyro inside, just like the caption says. Trust the science fiction.
>>
>>200701244
Come on, buddy, that's not something you can really say for Star Wars.

Agreed. I've seen a few designs where they convert it to a 1 man ship with a living quarter. Pretty neat

If there was a cool mechanical sequence where the split turbine connects to the rear output, I would have been OK with it.
>>

honestly the ARC-170 is kinda ugly and this makes it even uglier
This >>200699831 is the best iteration of it I've seen, minus the gimballed guns

Incom Corporation T-51 Heavy Bomber
Incom Corporation's only heavy bomber design to enter service, it did so only in very limited numbers but was instrumental in destroying several poorly defended Imperial ship yards in the early stages of the galactic Civil War. Slow and of poor maneuverability, the T-51 did not play a large role in the Rebellion, where smaller, multi-role fighters were more suited to the Rebellion's hit-and-run tactics.

Don't think EC Henry made this one but it's an ugly lil sumbitch isn't it? Still better than any of the "Resistance" ships.

you can just headcannon it that they took the V-wing and the Jedi starfighter's best aspects to create the TIE Fighter
>>
>>200702572

No, iirc it was one of the first fighters to have its own built in hyperdrive.

so why does the design show fan blades where they would be on an intake compressor
and if its a retrothruster why isnt there a nozzle on the front end to actually produce retro thrust

They aren't fan blades, just greeble struts that look like fan blades. And the entire opening is the nozzle for the retro thruster. Everything is handwavium in a galaxy far far away.
>>
>>200694958
The Incom T-65 "X-Wing" is the fighter that killed the Death Star. An almost perfect balance of speed, maneuverability, and defensive shields makes this the fighter of choice for Rogue Squadron, except when the mission profile disallows it.
>>
>>200707189
Hah I started reading that and the Rogue Squadron narrator voice popped into my head. Those games got drilled into my brain. I remember playing the Gamecube one in really long sessions and afterwards I'd have slight visual hallucinations of things flying past my vision. No joke.

Why are SW fighter ship designs based around a cockpit with two engines on either side? Is it just because of modern fighter plane designs?

They'll also never learn from their failures because it's always everyone else's fault
