I'm not smart enough to understand the meaning of this film. Can someone spell it out for me?
>>
>>200697064
He swam too much.
>>
It's all about introspective. Basically, he isn't the guy he tells you he is.
>>
He thinks himself to be the swimmer. At the end of the film, turns out he was the swammer.
>>
>>200697064
Never heard of it before, seems certified KINO.
>>
Should I watch it?
Am I going to get anything out of this movie?
>>
>>200697227
>Am I going to get anything out of this movie?
Confusion if you're a child, depression if you're an adult.

The pools/swimming is a metaphor for alcoholism.
>>
>>200697064
>HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THY FEET IN SANDLES, OH PRINCESS DAUGHTER
Um yeah, I'm thinking he was /ourswimmer/.
>>
if you've never swam in the ocean then of course a pool seems deep
>>

>footfag
Don't kid yourself. You're not welcome here or anywhere else.
>>
>>200697297
That’s part of it, it’s also “swimming” through the social scene etc.
>>

>the absolute state of summerfags
>>
why so many Swimmer threads now? don't mind it , I watched it last year for the first time after a recommendation from here, Burt Lancaster is great

I recommend reading the John Cheever short story. It is one of the best short stories of the 20th century. A surreal account of a man who had everything but loses it all during a life spent in selfish pursuits of his own wants and desires, living in self-delusion to ignore the negative consequences of his own actions before it's too late.
>>
>>200697453
Well I made this thread after watching it when someone recommended it on here. So it's a feedback loop or a disease. Wasn't a bad movie, just left me puzzled.
>>
>>200697554
Well said.
>>
>>200697276
I'm an adult but I don't like surrealism for surrealism's sake.
I don't enjoy Lynch for example but I have enjoyed other surrealist movies that would invoke certain feelings like nostalgia or would have interesting set pieces.
Is this heavily surrealist?
I don't mind depression as long as I don't have to suffer through a movie because it doesn't follow any logic.
>>
>>200697609
>Is this heavily surrealist?
only ever so slightly
>>
>>200697453
I just hope this one takes off too at some point
>>
>>200697554
Isn't that exactly what the movie is about?
>>200697453
Some dork here is obsessed with the movie, and thinks it's only a film you can understand with experience under your belt or something. He's a fag. The movie is okay. More of an oddity than a great film.

>>200697554
Some people can't deal with dealing with negative aspects of who they are and rather than try and confront their problems they just make up a delusion about themselves and live in a fantasy. Then at some point in their lives they come face to face with reality and crumble.
>>
>>200697718
I've seen this too, I'm a fan of the opening/closing but the whole middle grape stomping part was a bit repetitive
>>
Times you acted like the Swimmer?

It was all a dream, bro.
>>
>>200698329
>go to pool party
>start swimming
>lose track of time just enjoying the swim
>come up for air
>realize the party is over

:(
>>
>>200698329
I feel like the Swimmer so often. I was at family's house and they said I could swim and then when I swam they started looking at me funny like I was embarrassing myself.
>>
>>200697554
Put like that it sounds like the anti-Rabbit, Run.
>>
I read the short story and it was fucking stupid. I refuse to watch the film because I hated it so much.
>>
>>200698654
Sounds like you’ve been spending too much time in the pool.
>>
>>200697276
I watched it and was distracted by the pools and nice houses. Like they talked about something but I just paid attention to the pool in the background and thought about how I would swim in it.

Yes, but watching a movie=/=reading. What, you can't read or something? What a dickish, pointless reply. You could read the story quicker than watching a movie anyway and get more out of it.

this, so much this.
being "in the drink" is an obscure sailors term that sailors used, not perse about swimming pools but visa vi it could be. "drink" is also related to alcohol which is what can make ppl depressed bcos their drinking for shits and giggles.
the flick is about living in a mcmansion and finding out your a shallow creep he probably lost his family bcos he was molesting his daughter iirc that's *heavily* implied in the subtext, you see how he interacts it with the much younger girl and it's clear he has a history of his abuse and sexualising behaviours which is NOT OK.
ispo facto it just shows what happens to creepy guys, or what should happened to them. make my ick-radar go off just thinking about it

thanks in advance.
I'll make a thread to check on who's done "The Swim" later

i hate Lynch but i loved Lynch's Dune. I think David is being retarded on purpose, but when theres something established like Dune, allowing Lynch to add his signature style benefitted the movis compared to Villineuve's Dune which is contemporary, flat, and boring.
>>

nevertheless the timeless themes are relevant insofar as the ick factor can be contextualized albeit notwithstanding your summary is downright brilliant and you good sir are a gentleman and a scholar

I applaud you're insight you've clearly followed the flick with a keen eye that *sigh* most of the audience doesn't pay attention to when their lost in the whole enormous spectacle of the whole thing and all that. whichsoever angle you take it is a masterpiece and for that I say bravo to the director and to Mr. Lancaster himself, as they really managed to pull off the je ne sais qui that true auteurs seem to carry effortlessly. truly this will be in the heralds of the greats when it finally has its day in the limelight

new remake with ryan gosling - genius. I'll greedblight it for a 400 million dollar budget; he's a getaway swimmer who's also a swimmer, and he needs to pull off one big swim before he retires with the girl. he has to swim all the way across the county to make it across the state line and across the border into mexico with a million dollars in cash, only, there's a guy called the swammer who swims just as well as him but he's working for the other guys, and then another one called detective swummer who is working for the cops and just wants to capture him alive, but swammer wants to take him out and have the money for himself. but swimmer is double crossed, the girl stitches him up and put's him in a fox and he's in a state and she doesn't hold up her end of the bargain and swammer tells swimmer that she helped him all along and swimmer's defeated, but then swummer shoots swammer and swimmer escapes and the girl goes with him because she's all forgiven.

>>
>>200697064
It’s a really corny drama with an overbearing score. Basically we see what the film’s main character is internalizing - their denial and aggrieved experience over their life having gone to shit. He’s no longer young - his reputation is in the gutter amongst the other WASPs, and, at the end, it’s revealed that he’s been through a nasty divorce in which he’s been left all by himself, estranged from his wife and kids. What makes the movie stick out is that it was a little smarter about how it piece mealed this information compared to other movies, if only by a small margin.

The concept of fame doesn’t make any frickin sense to me. Acting is supposed to be a cool, easy, moderately paid job. There is no need for fame to exist, it’s something that was created.
>>
>>200703782

You sound like an actress. I wonder how many people wanted to become famous because they wanted to achieve something but once they got there they were severely disappointed. A lot of these people that join have really weird reasons to do it. You must be good at your job. You must be passionate about it. Maybe this explains why Hollywood is tumbling: “I had a dream but not the talent”.
>>

He's also great in Seven Days In May and Run Silent, Run Deep.

The short story makes it explicitly clear it's about his self-delusion and how his wreckless behavior led to his ruination.

band shirts exist because people want to uplift their own image. studios, record companies, etc. take advantage of this desire.

>>
I loved discovering this film in 2015 and it felt like such a hidden gem and nobody really knew about it and I enjoyed how unique and interesting the concept was and how dreamy and vibrant the stylistic structure of the movie was. And now about ten years later I feel like a really great and interesting movie is being wasted on thoughtless cynical assholes, and its going to be a big meme now like Come and See was, and now this weird little movie that it felt like only I had seen is now just another piece of mindless pop culture everyone will just collectively agree is 'okay' and now will be just another object of mediocrity whenever I bring it up.
