Sure they took some weird liberties like the romance triangle with Kili and Legolas and the OC donut steel girl, but honestly it's not like anyone besides Thorin and Bilbo even had a character arc to work with, so although it's a goofy addition it at least adds some meat to the story and doesn't detract much from the canon events. It still really should have been a two parter instead of a trilogy though.
