If I fast forward past the gay scenes will I miss anything important?

Also, why does HBO have to have a main character be gay in almost every show?

My only argument in favor of the gay scenes is that a lot of them help to establish how much of a whiny, needy pussy David is, which is a huge part of his character arc/development (especially in the last two seasons)
