Is this just prisoners dilemma? If so why would you create a game that is only meaningful if your contestants are retarded? And why would anyone choose to watch it?

If one person splits and the other takes, then the person who takes gets all the money.If that's the prisoners dilemma, then sure. It's just a stupid game, where it's always best to choose take. So of course, the whole "fun" is watching the two parties to convince each other to split and then seeing who falls for it.
