I've tried to get into this anime a few times. It's so wildly popular. Surely that must mean it's good, right? But it's fucking boring. I guess the art direction is good, but there's nothing compelling about the story and characters.

Same. Most shonen is cool for about 5 episodes when the stakes are grounded and the powers aren't too crazy. Then when the MC gets decent with his powers, he's introduced to characters that are even better than anything he can conceive of, and things go off the rails.
