Because Gen X and late millennials live shrouded in a constant irony cloud. Cheesy things are usually just things that are so passionate and unsophisticatedly earnest that it's embarassing for people who want to be seen as sophisticated adults, so they mask their enjoyment of these things in irony, and "I'm enjoying it BECAUSE it's shit".
