Traditionally men take their hats off in cars, it’s still in doors. You also have no reason to wear one inside a car (no rain or direct sunlight) and it can narrow your field of vision (not by a lot, but it can). It would have been more accurate to the time period to have him not wear his hat, and then put it back on while getting out of the car.
