Though some local populations are still in trouble, the global sperm whale population as a whole is in better shape than we are usually led to believe. The small number the Japanese take (it's not even one of the species they primarily target) don't come close to making a dent. There are literally hundreds of thousands of them in the oceans.

You know what we need? We need a Moby-Dick show. A series, on like HBO or Netflix or Paramount or something like that.

EVERY chapter gets its own episode. Make your way through the book bit by bit. Even the Cetology chapter and the chapters like "The Hyena" and "Of the Whiteness of the Whale." You can't cover this book in a single 2 or 3 hour movie, so don't even try. Make a TV series of it. It would be great, if done properly.

There has still yet to be a Moby Dick adaptation that properly captures the feeling of isolation and exestential dread/yearning. At least, that I know of. I think it would play well as a mini-series. Knowing the film/tv landscape these days though, they'd probably make Ahab a mexican and put girls on the ship.
>>
>>201625598
>EVERY chapter gets its own episode
Brother, have you even read it? About 2/3rds of the book is an enclyclepdia on documenting whale anatomy, dissection and sperm whale harvesting, whaling ship customs, what carpenters and blacksmiths did aboard the ship, etc. It would not be 'great' to adapt those chapters to film, as much as I love the book it would be boring and tedious to a high degree.

All the dominant predators of the ocean (and even rivers) have been atmospheric air breathers. Think of the marine lizards before the dinosaur extinction. Atmospheric air allows for increased metabolic activity. The largest freshwater predators are things like Aripipama that have lungs or catfish which have a structure very similar to a lung and breathe atmospheric oxygen

Honestly, what is the explanation for thus behavior? That's so strange. Are they smart enough to know that humans will get pissed if they kill us and will come after them? Is it pure altruism? Why are whales so nice to humans? Orcas too. You'd think such a dangerous predator would kill humans in the wild but they don't. The only ones that do are the ones that wen crazy in captivity.

Killer whales have evolving linguistic based languages that are passed on through the mother and cultural hunting traditions that are shaping their physical evolution. Two different pods with different hunting styles, like one being migratory and hunting large seals and the other hunting salmon living right next to each other will have a separate language and no gene flow between the pods but they will breed with the related cultures further away.

Look up old Tom. There have been several populations throughout history that learned to hunt other whales with humans. Killer whales are probably the animal closest to humans mentally.
>>
>>201631690
Not entirely true. Humpback Whales aren't quite at preindustrial levels yet, at least in the Southern Ocean, but they are close, estimated to recover by the 2050s. The main reason is that Right Whales and huge Rorqual whale species are nearly extinct and have extremely low breeding rates, and in many cases are slightly inbreeding, so need time to purge harmful mutations. So Humpbacks have no competition, because hardly any huge whales. Minkes are doing well too.
>>
>>201631786
But this trash isn't in trash cans. If it somehow is, they are not eating out of it, but the whole thing.

>Right Whales and huge Rorqual whale species are nearly extinct
Of those, only the North Atlantic right whale is critically endangered. The North Pacific species is endangered, but not critically. The Southern right whale and the bowhead are listed as least concern, though there are some endangered sub-populations of the latter.

Among large rorquals, the blue whale is endangered, but not critically. The fin has recovered similarly to the humpback. The sei is still listed as endangered mostly for political reasons, as it has recovered nearly to historical estimates (50,000 in 2018 vs 65,000 before industrial whaling).

Other than the North Atlantic right whale, most whale species have recovered significantly since the end of wide-scale commercial whaling. What is not widely understood is that it was not 19th or even early 20th century whaling that reduced most species so badly, but a massive boom post-WW2 (more whales were probably taken in the 1950s than in the entire 19th century). It didn't help that the Soviets consistently exceeded IWC quotas and lied about it.

>Even the Cetology chapter
You are a fucking psued who has not read Moby Dick.
Moby Dick would make an 'okay' prestige television show if adapted faithfully. The idea of doing an episode per chapter is actually retarded though since multiple chapters consist of essentially a single conversation. You might be able to make something cool with 5-15 minute 'episodes' done in the same way as old serial shorts played before and between feature presentations in theaters but I don't know if that format would succeed in the modern day.

Much of the appeal with Moby Dick is Melville's writing and the narration. This would not carry over well to a film adaptation. The actual narrative is poorly paced and you would likely trim a LOT of it (making it no longer a faithful adaptation) to create something that would work well in the medium.
But go ahead, pitch me your 48 minute version of "The Hyena".

They’re not jumping in. It’s way, way cooler than that. The whales spot schools of fish, then send up a ring of bubbles around them to sort of corral them, then they swim up through the center and scoop em all up. The fish you see jumping in instead of out are just doing that because fish are retards.

The niche of massive seaborne predator was empty after marine dinosaurs died out so speciation happened and someone filled it. It could have been just as easily some kind of seal or penguin or some species of fish(most likely a shark regaining their old niche). Unlikely, but even an invertebrate like a squid or flatworm or annelid or free-living mollusk could have done it.

Sperm whales fighting giant squids and octopuses is probably the kinoest thing about real life. Both have high intelligence, so it's effectively a battle between races of giants. The fact that it's not a lop-sided hunt and the kill could go either way. The fact that occurs in the deep and we only know of these battles from their aftermaths. What else IRL could even come close to topping this?

Orcas have been on record, more than once, in Greenland and Norway, as having literal, actual snowball fights with ship crews. This is in the Arctic and some crewmember threw a snowball at a surfaced Orca a couple times and they started throwing back little bits of ice slush trying to hit the person while doing their version of laughing. This ended up with almost the whole ship crew throwing snowballs where upon the Orca brought half a dozen members of its pod who started throwing ice slush back.

Whales, Corvids, Octopuses, Elephants and Dolphins (including Orcas) are almost certainly at the stage that early humanity was at JUST before we made the transition from early Homonid to later stage Homo neanderthalensis and sapiens.

Now they don't have manipulators for tool use which was an enormous intellectual accelerant so who knows if they'll go farther but in the next 50,000 years if they do they could literally be another fully sapient, conscious species just like we are.

Over air it will just rupture your eardrums (pressure waves tear the delicate eardrum). But salt water is much more dense than air. Those same pressure waves rapidly compress and decompress all your body cavities, your cranium, organs, brain, eyeballs. You can easily die from that.

I have been there. It's true that it's the deepest lake, and captured some sealife before the ocean retreated. The only freshwater seal inhabits here, and there are some unique small fish species. But there is no deep giant sea life because the surface freezes over with 2-3m thick ice. Oxygen gets very low and large creatures cannot survive.

Large life does not need oxygen to survive, in fact there is a phenomenon known as Deep Sea Gigantism where the lower in the ocean you go the larger things tend to get because of something called Kleiber's Law which states that an animal's metabolic rate scales to 3/4 its mass.

This means in effect that the larger an animal becomes the more efficient its metabolic rate. This is an enormous advantage in deep sea environments because life in general and food in particular is so scare compared to other environments that a larger creature will actually need to consume less energy to sustain itself than a smaller creature.

I know your original point is about oxygen but my point is deep sea life does not require oxygen intake via surface air and they get massive, in fact there are almost certainly bigger things than whales in the abyssal zone and the hadal zone beneath it simply because evolutionary pressure points them that way.
>>
>>201658265
Link to test?
>>
>>201658570
That works in the ocean that constantly has oxygen input from the surface and rainfall. It does not work when the whole lake gets capped over for 4 months of the year.

Maybe not but there may be room for a creature that enters oceanic hibernation or Torpor to significantly lower its requirements for oxygen.

I don't have any evidence for this and you're right there hasn't been anything discovered but I don't really think its quite as impossible as you're making it out to be.
>>
>>201658722
Nothing has been discovered, but you must put it into context.

We are only JUST into mapping out the Abyssal zone and its denizens, as mentioned above, Deep Sea Gigantism is a proven thing and is trending to be very common in the portions of the Abyssal zone we have mapped, almost every version of everything we've found in the abyssal zone that has an analog in the upper zones is several times larger than their upper zone cousins. The shrimp in the abyssal zone are 10x larger than common pelagic shrimp.

Knowing that, and knowing that there is an even deeper zone called the Hadal zone (named for the god Hades) which we have managed to reach only about 7 times in our history as a race, I think it is quite likely that there are bigger things than whales down there.
