Legolas is a Mary Sue.
>>
I really dislike the fighting scenes of LOTR. They aged incredibly poorly and feel like capeshit.
>>
>>201646172
Male characters can not be "Mary Sues."
>buh muh Gary Stu!
Feminist cope.
>>
>>201646172
That's Gary Stu, sweaty
>>
Yes. The entire Fellowship is, outside of the hobbits
>>
>>201646172
men have better skeleton structure that makes this possible
>>
>>201646172
Daily reminder that Gimli wins the orc-killing contest in Helm's Deep by one orc in the books.
>>
>>201646172
My question is: how powerful do you think Elves should be and how can you display that? They're supposed to be superhumanly agile, deadly, accurate, and more or less magical. Some have killed Balrogs. They're extra light on their feet and you can see Legolas floating on snow that the fellowship sinks into. So how do you get that across to the audience and make it epic fantasy yet not go too far making it silly?
>>
>>201647634
Legolas isn't a 1st or 2nd gen elf like Chaladriel. He's some nth generation wood elf. They're dramatically less powerful because the world has been drained of its magic.
>>
It's a male so the correct term is "gary sue"
>>
>>201646172
>2931 years old
>literal magical creature
>almost completely unaffected by extreme weather, or disease, or fucking gravity and other crazy shit like that
>impossible to be godlike with a fucking bow
You're dumber than the idiot who couldn't accept Boromir getting killed by fucking arrows.

0 Stakes: The Franchise

Nah, he's just overpowered. Mary Sues have the whole plot revolve around them and save the day singlehandedly. They also have tons of speaking lines where they inexplicably know the solution to every problem. Legolas barely has lines and just does random trick plays on nameless mooks. I don't think Legolas pulls off even a single clutch play in the whole run of movies. He couldn't even take down the uruk running to light the bomb under the deeping wall and that oliphaunt was just one of many.

>zero stakes
>literally all of those characters come within an inch of death multiple times throughout the movies

He's at least half-Sinda, which is at least a few steps above your generic wood elf, but other than that you're basically right. He's still far removed from the absolute gigachads you see in the Silm, and nowhere near even the diminished power of the big names still kicking around ME in the Third Age, like Galadriel and Glorfindel.
But even some nth generation Avari shitter is still leaps above your typical mortal. Legolas is above even that, though the movies just made it look silly.
>>
The entire fellowship minus the hobbits were legendary fighters completely kitted out with magically equipment.
>>
>>201647738
He is High Elf. Read a book nigger.
>>
>>201648345
He's the son of the king of the wood elves.
>>
>>201648273
so why did sauron and billions of orcs rape middle earth for millenia if the "good guys" can just shit out a dozen heroes who each oneshot 10 balrogs at once like its no problem??
>>
>>201648804
They didn't. Sauron lost and hid like a bitch for thousands of years.
>>
>>201648804
You answered your own question: it took millenia to wear down all of the bullshit heroes and the great works of their civilizations. By the time of the movies, magic and all non-humans are almost extinct due to his subterfuge and invasions and that's why he chooses then to strike for the KB. He would have won, too, but he got too cocky.
>>
>>201648804
>can just shit out
They couldnt and thats the point. This was literally a once in a lifetime meeting of the cream of the crop, and they still barely succeeded.
>>
>>201648214
What if "70 troll kills a day" Hurin had been part of the fellowship?
>>
>>201648273
The hobbits had magic swords personally picked out by one of the most powerful beings in middle arth
>>
>>201648632
Thranduil was originally from Doriath, like Celeborn. Both are Sindarin, despite ruling over wood elves.

Bit sick of this take
>>
>retards still don't know what mary sue means
Protip: it doesn't mean "the character is powerful".
>>
>>201650444
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
>>
>>201647876
Aragorn definitely has a lot of Sue traits. Aragorn is like Tolkien's idea of what a perfect human is, and his purpose is to prove the strength of men still survives.

A single Balrog could slaughter the entire fellowship minus Gandalf without issue
>>

The movies were, not the novels
>>

What a Mary Sue argument
>>
>>201648345
he's teleri sindarin, so not a high elf but umanyar
>>
>>201646172
Yes but no one cares because he's not a girl
>>
>>201649929
Yes but they weren't legendary fighters.
>>
>>201646172
Is legolas useful in the books? You could fuckin cut his out of the films and lose nothing nesides Tony Hawks Pro Archer
>>
>>201650444
You should read the bible if you want to see real proto capeshit.
>>
>>201651816
every character is a hundred times more fleshed out and complex than in the movie, yes
>>
>>201651831
I dont need fleshed out. I wanna know if hes a major contributor. Gimli makes his voice heard but Legolas is a wallflower with a high killcount
>>
>>201647875
what is the point of this image?
>>
>>201647944
>come within an inch of death
And then literally got revived by god. It’s even dumber than dragon ball z.
>>
>>201651874
he's no less of a contributor to the story than gimli I think

All of this in a LOTR thread. Then you wonder why no one likes you, fucking insufferable faggots.

tranny
>>
>>201652100
LOTR is a reddit movie that served as protocapeshit
>>
>>201651893
Judging by the other posts in the thread, some people think it was unrealistic that Boromir died from his wounds. That picture presumably is used as evidence for why his death was realistic.
>>
>>201646172
Not a self-insert, which is a primary quality of a Sue. The audience might *wish* they were as cool as Legolas, but he has none of the traits that would make him easy to identify with. For example if Legolas was a shy nerd as well as the greatest Bowman in the world who everyone instantly loves and respects (unless they're evil), then he'd be more of a Sue.
>>
>>201647876
Sauron is a Mary Sue, checkmate
