Elvis is the most incomprehensible movie of all time. It's actually just a bunch of Elvis concert scenes stitched together by tiktok clips. How was it not completely shat on by critics? How did it get an oscar nom for BEST PICTURE. This isn't even a fucking movie.

It shows plenty of exposition of his early days. The 1968 NBC comeback special was just as huge of a moment in his life as career so it deserved the focus.

It was actually supposed to be a movie about "Col" Tom Parker (as played by Tom Hanks) and the thrall he had over Elvis and Elvis' seeming welcoming of it. But studio marketeers chickened out, and it became, as you say, more Elvis song and dance.
I still liked it.
