I remember an interview with Cronenberg where he said something like, in his imagination, the teleportation tech goes on to change the world and Brundle is treated kind of like Marie Curie. Someone who tragically died exploring new scientific territory to benefit humanity as a whole. I thought it was an interesting take on an otherwise pretty depressing movie.
