It's retarded audio production.
Watch any film before 2010 and you will clearly hear and understand dialogue. Any recent-ish film after that is an absolute mumble fest. Even '70s films, with the shittiest audio quality recorded live with a boom mic on crappy tape, and then imprinted on film stock sounds better than those bazillion channel Dolby fuckfest audio slop you hear today. Christopher Nolan films is the worst in that respect.
