They only put these stupid fucking things in the movies to sell toys, right?
>>
There were toys of this?
>>
They were in the book.
>>
Which star wars is this?
>>
>>201707149
if you would just care to read the book my dear /tv/ zoomer scholar...
>>

>My KING! They have giant elephants! Should we simply keep our distance and use our arrows to hurt and confuse these giant monstrosities?
>Oh…. You want us to charge into them and get stomped… oh… alright.
>>
>>201707685
i doubt hed ever fought olyphants before so a strategy to fight em had never been devised
>>
>>201707149
They didn't sell toys of that
>>
>>201707685
>keep your distance
The job was to keep them from entering the city they would have plowed through them if they just stood there in the moment devising a plan.
>>
>>201707685
And it worked, dumb nigger
>>
>>201707149
That's the only reason things are put in movies
>>
>>201707806
Theoden is supposed to be a semi-competent commander. Any damn fool knows that you shouldn’t attack a more powerful beast head on when you can outmanoeuvre them and hit them from afar.

>>201707876
Ah yes… the city that was already breached and full of narrow streets… yeah…
>>
>>201707685
>>201708326
How will they keep distance when they are charging at them at full speed and will reach them under a minute?
>>
>>201707208
people don't like fantastical things in fantastical films

that's why lotr is so devoid of real magic....

They're called miniatures.
>>
Grey as a mouse,
Big as a house,
Nose like a snake,
I make the earth shake,
As I tramp through the grass;
Trees crack as I pass.
With horns in my mouth
I walk in the South,
Flapping big ears.
Beyond count of years
I stump round and round,
Never lie on the ground,
Not even to die.
Oliphaunt am I,
Biggest of all,
Huge, old, and tall.
If ever you'd meet me
You wouldn't forget me.
If you never do,
You won't think I'm true;
But old Oliphaunt am I,
And I never lie.
>>

I was almost the perfect target market age group for these films being born in 1988 and I don't remember any toy merchandise for this stuff unless you include Games Workshop launching a TT LOTR game like Warhammer
>>
>>201708748
>that's why lotr is so devoid of real magic....
That was in the novels too.
>>
>>201709393
yes they were
there's some magical elements in the books
most of it was cut from the movies...
>>
>>201710297
The premise of an ethereal being putting his power into a ring, wizards casting magic and Balrogs existing invalidates that notion. You want to see TES or DND levels of magic when both of those settings owe their existence to Tolkien.
>>
>>201707806
This is one of the funniest things i've read today. Like imagine a hunter who had fought a lion but then encounters a really big bear.
>wtf what do i do now... it's just incomprehensible... where do i even begin?! i need to fight and lose to it many times before i can think of a way to deal with this...
LOL
>>
>>201708748
>that's why lotr is so devoid of real magic....
i thought that was because magic was getting weaker over time and by the time the events of hobbit/lotr came around it was super diminished.

Yes, elephants have been used in wars for a long time in the real world.
And?

>>
>>201712409
>>201707208
they were in the book but were they supposed to be that big? I thought olyphants were just maybe a little bigger than regular elephants. Those things are like 100 feet tall
>>
>>201712516
probably a lot harder for elephants
>>
>>201709276
There were action figures for the first film that I remember, but they were also pretty shitty. It was also around when Yugioh was just starting in the US and that apparently caused a slump in toy sales because of kids wanting cards more than toys, so maybe they didn't make as many for the second or third films.
>>
>>201712551
The biggest African elephant ever recorded stood at 13 feet tall. The ones in the movie are around 45 or 50 feet. They're supposed to be extremely massive going by Sam's poem >>201709214. And there are creatures that are even bigger in Middle Earth. Mostly the dragons.
>>
>>201712566
Imagine all of the elephants trying to fit through the gates of Gondor.
>>
>>201712645
I can't even imagine one of them. I honestly don't know what role they would have played in the battle of the Rohirrim didn't show up, and they didn't know the Rohirrim were showing up.
>>
>>201707149
>but if we changed them to rhino's, no one would notice
Mark Rosewater said calmly

if they're that big couldn't they help break down the walls? Just have the elephant headbutt the wall

I swear this is the new "eagles, ring, mt doom" argument.
>Be Theoden
>lead cavalry based army
>Movement is key to success for cavalry
>About to be "hammer and anviled" between giant elephants, orcs and the walls of Minas Tirith
>Men are beginning to panic
>have seconds to rally them and make a decision
>decide to charge at them in order to get behind the giant elephants and out of the deathtrap
Theoden made the right call and I'm tired of people saying it was a bad tactic.

If you could keep your horses from breaking it was a good tactic against elephants historically.

Elephants are intelligent cowards and you can break their morale if they think they are going to get hurt. And once they do they turn on their own infantry and break the line to get away.

Romans would do it on foot.

They're large enough to have tiny men up on their neck, and war towers.
>To his astonishment and terror, and lasting delight, Sam saw a vast shape crash out of the trees and come careering down the slope. Big as a house, much bigger than a house, it looked to him, a grey-clad moving hill. Fear and wonder, maybe, enlarged him in the hobbit’s eyes, but the Mûmak of Harad was indeed a beast of vast bulk, and the like of him does not walk now in Middle-earth; his kin that live still in latter days are but memories of his girth and majesty. On he came, straight towards the watchers, and then swerved aside in the nick of time, passing only a few yards away, rocking the ground beneath their feet: his great legs like trees, enormous sail-like ears spread out, long snout upraised like a huge serpent about to strike, his small red eyes raging. His upturned hornlike tusks were bound with bands of gold and dripped with blood. His trappings of scarlet and gold flapped about him in wild tatters. The ruins of what seemed a very war-tower lay upon his heaving back, smashed in his furious passage through the woods; and high upon his neck still desperately clung a tiny figure – the body of a mighty warrior, a giant among the Swertings.
