Best I can come up with is that GRRM told them the Children aren't as nice as they seem in the story, and there's an underlying element of horror surrounding them. All of those tree chapters in Dance are creepy as hell. You have Bloodraven looking like a corpse, you have Coldhands being an actual corpse, you have them feeding Bran bloody/veiny paste that may or may not be Jojen Reed. There's spooky shit going on up there, and it emanating from the Children. I reckon making them scary looking was the extremely lazy way D&D chose to communicate that without having to do atmosphere or spend time on Bran, who they seem to despise.
