Do A24 fans not know what humor is? Why does every critic — professional or amateur — seem to miss that this movie is funny? Its one thing to recognize its humor and simply not finding it funny, but every review and comment about the movie I read seems to take it completely at face value and be confused by clearly comedic scenes.

X and Pearl both had those. The issue with MaXXXine is that it feels like a first draft. It's a stupid film that juggles a bunch of ideas but fails to develop any. And not in a Blow Up type way where the ambiguity is the point. Peal is the best of three because of how simple a straightforward it is. While Ti West is definitely a "post-horror" whatever you want to call it filmmaker (and an early one in that, going since early 00s) he fails to realize that his main shtick is not thematic subversion but rather effective stylization. That's why X fails too. It's set-up is drawn out and it's finale is disappointing and awkward. Because he didn't pay much attention to properly pacing everything, instead thinking about how le epic it is that the final girl in a slasher is as degenerate as the other people, and not innocent at all, and how le epic it is that the villain is the same type of whore, but uh oh she is unfulfilled in life and therefore le evil, and OH WHAT IF SHE WAS PLAYED BY THE SAME ACTRESS, bravo Ti, but how about setting up atmosphere well and actually having a bloody fun massacre? He could have had both, but just got lazy. The visual style is neat but not trashy enough, it recalls Texas Chainsaw, but that film oozed grit, the image itself was like visual sandpaper, that rough. And despite that movie not being very violent and bloody through the visuals itself it produced pure terror. X is way too calculated and polished, although admittedly Ti West did a good job passing digital image as a film stock. Not sure why he couldn't shoot it on film, but I guess it would've been too expensive (X and Pearl had microbudgets of 1 million each).

Pearl is easily the best of the 3 films. MaXXXine had its moments and I appreciate that it was less of a slasher and more of an exploitation/revenge vibe so it wasn't just X again.
