It takes itself and its premise seriously, they write the apes as real characters and embrace the exploration of how ape society would form without irony or compromise. It never feels like anyone involved is letting the fact that they're le monke films drive the writing down. I think that's why everyone hated Bad Ape in 3 so much, he felt like a cartoon talking monkey character compared to the rest of the apes.
