This series is the most unimaginative fucking thing ever produced in Japan.
There is literally not a single original idea in it. It's just a travel from non-descript generic medieval city to another boring medieval city. The monster designs are shit. The character designs are boring.
It has about 15 minutes of half-decent animation sprinkled throughout the entire (long) length of it. The rest is cheap shortcut anime dreck. They give a bunch of people big mustaches/beards so they don't have to animate their faces AT ALL.

The problem is that nothing in this setting actually poses a threat to Frieren. This is fine for the first 3/4 of the show, where it's basically a slice of life show about an elderly mage coping with loss. The introduction of a battle shonen arc just undercuts it. It would be the equivalent of that episode from One-Punch Man where Saitama enters a superhero fighting tournament. The whole thing is played for laughs and lasts about 15 minutes (Saitama's main concern is losing his wig). Imagine if that had been 7 episodes.

I used to be the same kind of purist but sometimes the combination of score, animation, and performances completely elevate the material and deliver a superior experience.
DBS and Demon Slayer are probably the best examples of this. Shonen in general really. It lends itself naturally to the screen.

The only recent exception that comes to mind is Chainsaw Man, but that's because the direction and tone it had going on were antithetical to the manga.

To put this more clearly, people like Freiren because it takes a set of extremely worn JRPG/generic fantasy tropes and makes them interesting again by looking at them from a different angle. What happens after the Demon King is defeated? How does a nigh-immortal being handle living around us mortals? How does she form connections in spite of that? The bog-standard Hero's Party comp and the super generic fantasy world are to a degree the point of it. Some of my favourite moments are the ones where Freiren has a flashback to Himmel acting like a generic jrpg hero - they take the whole idea of "the party stops adventuring to gather 15 barrels of supplies" or whatever and make it interesting by turning into a discourse on what a hero who actually does that is like, and then it becomes doubly interesting, because Himmel's whole purpose as a background character is to cause Freiren to, as this anon put it, mature further as a nominally mature adult. That's why it's so enjoyable (and also why the tournament arc was so meh. In a vacuum it was fine, but for a show like this it completely ignores the main themes)

The animation varies between pleasant and serviceable, but never bad; the voice acting is solid; the sound design is good and the music is fine; the character writing is always a treat; the chromatic aberration and weird film grain filter would normally bother me but here I don't mind them. It's good, not a masterpiece, but not generic slop either. Helps that I'm a fantasy man first
