Maybe nothing, maybe it’s just like the Matrix, a system of control. That makes The Night King in the show basically an Agent Smith type renegade trying to destroy the entire system while still ultimately being a pawn within it. Maybe The Night King is more like Neo though and everyone trying to stop him is only doing so on behalf of the Weirnet.
