BeBop, both the series and Knocking
GITS SAC, New Gig, etc.
Patlabor 1+2
Ninja Scroll
Jin Roh

You're never going to get the depth of GITS and you're never going to get the animation detail of Akira, sorry.

>>
>>203692246
I dont know, just watch the original blade runner if you havent already, or play mgs 2 or cyberpunk. Only these can give you the cyberpunk high you got from Ghost in the Shell. Read Neuromancer if you into books
>>
>>203692845
Well it's not really accidental because Patlabor 2 happened and invented how GITS was made. More lightning in a bottle right place right time that GITS ended up in their hands.
Which is also my rec for OP.
>>203692246
Patlabor 2 is basically, from a production standpoint, GITS with more time and money behind it. 90% of team that made it made GITS immediately afterwards on a marathon schedule, and what was left of the team went on to make Jin-Roh.
But it's also not an adaptation so you're stuck with the brunt of its director's own personal politics side of 'near future dystopia' rather than GITS, as an adaption, that deals more with more existential sides of cyberpunk.
>>
>>203692877
I hate how I can't recommend this to more people because of THAT scene.
>>
>>203694384
What scene? is it safe to watch with the gf?
>>
>>203693706
>director's own personal politics
Kazunori Ito wrote Patlabor 2 by himself (he also wrote the first GITS movie). The legend is he went full hermit mode with no communication to the outside world until the script was done.
>>
>>203692845
Ghost in the Shell, a series about cyborg chicks and their struggles with identity and existence, goes from being stunningly awesome (Stand Alone Complex) all the way to downright monkey-tier incoherent hoots (Man Machine Interface). You never know what you're going to get with this.

>>203694610
Personally it's really hard for me to take Patlabor 2 as more than Oshii's fuck you to Tokyo I'm moving to the sticks movie. At least after reading the old interviews of him and Miyazaki talking shit.
Plus Oshii is pretty deflective when it comes to being called an auteur because of how animation is made is fundamentally different from live action cinema but he did say "as far as I'm concerned, the only Patlabor I've made is Patlabor 2. It's the only thing that I can proudly call my own work".
>>
>>203697216
But it's complete shit that misses the point of the film being that the mc and femc both know he's there to kill her from the beginning and that they're both coping with will he won't he.
The glownigger shit going on is background setting for that plot.
>>
>>203697815
The ending definitely didn't need to be changed and I hated that but I just pretend it ends like the anime in my headcanon. The rest of the live action is kino, great shoot em up meme.

The live-action Kerberos/Jin-roh/Red Spectacles trilogy from Oshii. Angel's Egg. Patlabor 1 and 2. Royal Space Force. Nausicaa. End of Evangelion (but only if you watch the TV series first, otherwise it's pointless). Rurouni Kenshin OAV (Trust and Betrayal). Escaflowne movie (TV series first strongly recommended, but not as critical as Evangelion). Millenium Actress. Perfect Blue. Memories (by Otomo). Mononoke Hime. Macross: Do You Remember Love movie (again, best to see original TV series first). The Wind Rises. Your Name. Alien Nine (OAV). Barefoot Gen. Laputa (Castle in the Sky). Porco Rosso. Castle of Cagliostro (Lupin III). Macross Plus OAV or Movie (almost same thing, just recut). Kite. Spirited Away.
Random order, mostly.

8man
Armitage III
Metropolis (2001)
Bubblegum Crisis

There's Appleseed, but it's a less fun Dominion Tank.

Also, 80s Dirty Pair for something more lighthearted and comedic

And it's not exactly 100% theme related, but don't miss Legend of Galactic Heroes.

Lastly, don't bother with anything post 2001. Everything at that point and after is up its own ass thanks to Evangelion, and largely lacks the beautiful scifi art of what came before it.

I liked the secret, unlisted orchestral version of Run Rabbit Junk, the melancholy remix of Inner Universe that plays for a minute in the background of one 2nd Gig episode, and Cyberbird in general

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ts-G4Vjyva8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-jqv6uNBjs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79w0T1jmgoQ

My favourite musical moment of SAC was how they managed to fit the full 5 minute version of Inner Universe into the last episode of SAC 1, though. They played the first half during the epilogue and timed the credits to start during the midsection lull, so it was completely seamless.

I remember it mostly for the killable children it had. The first child I saw was at the docks in New York. I gave him a candy bar, then beat him to death with a crowbar. A homeless woman saw me and started running. I gunned her down with a silenced pistol. Then I dumped both bodies into the Hudson river. My heart was pounding the entire time. It was actually exhilarating.

It was a dystopian setting. The western coast of the Americas were destroyed by an earthquake, the manufactured plague is killing everybody, there was a second U.S. civil war, the FBI is running concentration camps, the economy is shit and there are god damned greasels in the sewers!
That's why the sci-fi tone in inconsistent.
>>
>>203708937
>just spin the meat faster over the fire, it’s going to be the same bro

Lol, lmao even. Every year some of the most "secure" servers and databases on earth are hacked. Despite this you somehow think your cybernetic (web) accessible implants won't be breached

I don't watch kids cartoons, because I'm not a baby, but the live action film was pretty good.

There is also a good film called Alita that was based on a J-Toon. Well worth a watch because it has a Dua Lipa song in it:

https://youtu.be/kO8fTk6oKQg?si=4bYkDY1jMzs6xS_E

There is a series on Netfix called Cowboy Beatbox thats meant to be good and also based on a J-Toon.

>>203711192
>Judging a story by the medium instead of the content
Lol, a lot of the stuff in this thread is R+. Alita had a solid anime movie back in the day (one of the top character designers workes on it). Alita the live action was pretty good too
>tho the manga is supreme
Good news - so many NPCs saw Avatard 2 that Cameron has the dosh to do Alita sequels

Probably a long shot but does anyone have a good torrent for the 2nd Season of "You're Under Arrest"? Was looking over at Nyaa where I usually find everything but all I could find was a torrent from like 2008 that's barely reaches 320p.
>>
>>203710580
no, Anon's allowing himself to acquire a taste for murder. given how they described it, they're getting more of a sick thrill out of it than a normal person would. they're not just completing a video game objective, they're simulating a realistic act of murder and finding satisfaction in it. the transhumanism statement was just a tangential guess given their personality and i turned out right.
>>
Escaflowne is super overrated. Its story is average, nothing special even with its contemporaries at the time. The animation ranges from incredible to absolute shit. Especially when it comes to the Guy/Melefs. Some times it'll be solid and then other times you swear they're made of liquid and it just doesn't look good. The way they're trying to adapt movement by making it flow like liquid just looks so fucking bad. Not to mention you'd expect that with such an average story that at least the fights would be good but they either end too quickly or you get left cocktease when someone stops it.

Felt the need to mention it because in every thread its mentioned and in every thread someone always posts this webm >>203695429 As if the quality is that good all throughout. And I will admit, Ep19 is probably one of the most beautifully animated episodes I've ever seen. However, the show wildly ranges in quality

Anybody know an anime movie from around this period where a guy's two close relatives/friends are trapped in these black cocoons and he has to choose to shoot one down and the other becomes the main antagonist of the movie?
Saw it as a kid. Wasn't a kids movie though, I don't think. More like a horror/action.
>>
>>203692246

As far as anime movies go you could try Tenshi no Tamago, Rurouni Kenshin tsuiokuhen, Macross do you remember love, Escaflowne a girl in Gaia and Memories: Magnetic rose. Also Patlabor I and II are directed by Oshii and are pretty good.

If you care for anime shows you could give Cowboy Bebop, Baccano, 12 kingdoms, Seirei no moribito, Basilisk Kouga Ninpo, Black Lagoon, Planetes and Noir a chance as well.

All that said there is nothing quite as good as GITS and Jin Roh if you ask me. That´s peak anime. It´s as good as it gets.

Black Lagoon was pretty cringe. Great intro theme tho. Cowboy Bebop is alright but it's meh compared to Outlaw Star. Planetes is solid.

I'd put Memories: Magnetic Rose and Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust up there with Jin Roh and GiTs. GiTs is definitely patrician tier.

Ok? I'm merely stating that it wouldn't be my first recommendation to someone new to anime (particularly modern females). They would immediately detach from the protagonist.
>>
>>203713720
Sounds like a you problem.
>>
>>203713832
Why? He made a move and got turned down. The bitch is kind of a prude and full of '''''trauma''''' and he underestimated it. After realizing she doesn't want sex time, he respects her wishes and leaves. Literally nothing happens except clumsy human interaction.
>>
>>203714330
I'm not complaining. I think women should be property at best (unless they're genius enough to be Samantha Carter).
However, "in the modern court of law" his 'making a move' would be considered Sexual Assault. And not just some Me Too BS. Of course the context is important bc they're in wartime.....but most ppl won't see it that way.
>>
>>203692246
Unfortunately there are only a handful of Japanese animation kinos that aren't some gook pervert fantasy "anime". Those kinos are no longer in production.

More than a handful, but the Golden Era of anime passed (it was 1985 to 2010ish). Just as we're getting rushjob garbage in the West, they're making rushjob garbage in the East.
