David Foster Wallace's final essay lamented that we should be in a sincere society that champions excellence instead of irony and ridicule.

"So bad it's good" culture that has been popularized by things like RLM, Sam Hyde, and Vinegar Syndrome, is an insult to his memory. It is one of the tactics they use to demoralize a population.

>"Go ahead and consume these terrible movies, it's the cool 'in' thing to do.
>"You want to show off your superiority don't you? You're a special boy better than these bad movies. People who make non-Hollywood outsider art deserves ridicule!"
>"There is no such thing as quality anyway, there is no right or wrong, so you must embrace mediocrity for the good of all."

The worst part of "so bad it's good" being such a popular refrain is that no one can any longer process the concept of someone genuinely liking something that isn't considered "good" by the cultural hivemind.
>Mortal Kombat (1995) is a good movie.
>You mean "so bad it's good," right?
>No, I mean I enjoy watching it.
>I get it, I love watching it, too. It's so bad it's good! I'm with you, anon!
>No, I don't think it's a bad movie at all. It's a GOOD movie that I ENJOY watching, it's not ironic.
>If you like a bad movie, it has to be because it's SO bad it's good. There's no reason to be a contrarian and call it good when everyone knows it's bad.
It's very frustrating. No on can just hold or discuss genuine opinions any more.

Some of the most fun I've ever had with my friends is when we were just acting stoopid and getting drunk together. We're all university educated professionals. Most of us have wives and children. But we don't spend our time off debating philosophy, religion, or the nature of current politics. We could certainly do that, but we'd rather get druk and make jokes about farts and people we don't like.

Oh you sweet summer child. Watching cheesy movies to laugh at them is *way* older than that. What do you think MST3K was? Or even (Son of) Svengoolie, Joe Bob Briggs, and Elvira? And that's a line that goes all the way back to the OG hosted horror shows of the 1950s like Vampira and Shock Theater.
