Gotta be this... I'm an actual oldfag 14 years give or take... and this last year is the first time I'm pretty sure that /hor/ didn't die off my Jan and actually ran year round. I think it's the same thing that happened to the IMdB message boards back in the day, bunch of mentally ill spastics set up camp and made it their playground. Suspiria 2018 and The Shining strike the same chord. It's the same lubricious madness, bathing in blood, the Universe seeping in and not necessarily making sense. It takes on the form of the divine feminine, possibly with implications that the Universe itself is a woman in a Spinozian pantheist sense and that the witches are her avatars, out of place in our Apollonian patriarchal world. In the case of The Shining, it was pure “scratch the Universe and who knows what the fuck will come out”.
For tasteless /hor/tards that prefer the original, Suspiria 2018 just looks like a bunch of women (gay) dancing to a soundtrack that isn't black metal, and that's as deeply as they engage with it. Shocking that these Cheeto-y chuds don't get it; as years go by, it will be re-evaluated as one of the best horror films in cinema history, while the themes I've mentioned will be explored further in books and scholarly journals.

The Tale of the Frozen Ghost
The Tale of the Lonely Ghost
The Tale of the Thirteenth Floor

Dream Girl and Frozen Ghost don't really try to be scary at all but they're classic stories and fit the theme of someone telling a ghost story better than most of the episodes.

31 Nights of Horror, 2024
>Day 6: The Devil Comes at Night
A man wakes up in an isolated house with a hangover, a broken hand, and several strangers knocking at the door, demanding he come outside. Thus begins a competent yet by-the-numbers siege story about satanic cults and racism. Turns out this is a Socially Conscious Movie. Our protagonist is a black guy, the cultists are white, and they frequently point this out to us. When the supernatural elements are revealed, we discover that the villains are simply using the power of Satan to become more effective racists. This isn't actually a huge surprise, lots of siege movie are about racism. We have Green Room, where a Neonazi gang tries to kill a Punk band who witnessed a murder, and the OG siege movie, 1983's "Siege", is about a Neonazi gang trying to kill a gay dude who witnessed a murder. Here, though, something is missing. The film is so focused on racism that the Satanic elements feel tacked-on and vestigial, and it would honestly have been better if the killers were just KKK members or something instead of a cult. You'd die if you took a shot every time the characters said "Racist" or "White supremacist", but the supernatural stuff just comes up and the end and goes nowhere. The flick didn't even feel like it WANTED to add supernatural shit, like they were fulfilling some focus-group studio obligation when they just wanted to do a Racism story. Here's an idea for your next picture - A Neonazi gang tries to kill a Black guy who witnessed a murder. Boom. I'll take the consulting check by mail.

Pretty sure Ambrose Bierce and MR James have about 20 stories with the same twist 100 years earlier anyway. Some stories, like the phantom hitchhiker (Resurrection Mary, etc) have been around even before we started writing stories down and just reappear in different forms a la Mothman Prophecies/Goblin Universe.

Shyamalan is just a hack like Mike Flanagan, James Wan, Eli Roth, etc who's entire career hinges on finding an audience who's never seen whatever he's ripping off.

Sure. Some cliffnotes are:
>set in an eldritch medieval town where a portal opened up on the outskirts and let monsters into the world

>castle is one of the last safe havens
>there are a group of knights of the round table like characters that make up the main cast
>they used to be an army but have been reduced to just a few capable soldiers by fighting invading monstrosities
>the king is one of the two central antagonists that is about to ensure humanity's extinction as he sends their last line of defence into the eldritch portal to retrieve his baby son who he knows is dead

Anyway that's kind a retarded explanation that glosses over like 75% of the actual script and doesn't really go into the slasher parts of it. But hey I have a producer interested in a different script that's similarly high concept, and I don't think this one will be too hard a sell if I get that one off the ground

The first season was the only one worth watching, and even then, it was a pretty uninspired pastiche, pretty much just clips from different 80's movies stitched together and reheated. No different from what Joker was to those Scorsese films. That one random episode where Eleven joins the X-Men who rightfully never come up again was especially bad, even for this show, though.

Raw was excellent, for the keen eye it's very clear on what the movie truly is about, a woman cannibalizing all she deems loveable, utterly confused by her own destructive power, destroying familiar relations, preying upon the unaware. The ending with the revelation that it runs in family, her mother teaching her not to learn to be better, but that it's just "what she is" and her father being shown to put up with it all the time without saying anything is the icing on the cake, women seem innocent, to themselves and to others, but the hunger they hide for destruction is never sated, the most they can hope to do is find someone who will willingly accept to be eaten, after they've sown enough chaos.

Of your list I've only seen
Jacob's Ladder which seemed like more of a pondering movie than a horror movie
American Psycho which is black comedy/tired "corpo bad" hollyslop very meme but barely counts as horror despite the story and the "protagonist" is the slasher, everyone else is just an expendable unrelatable set piece by design.
The Shining, I love Nicholson but again it's main character is the villain, it's often unintentionally funny, and worst it is adapted from a King novel.

So I'm not sure about watching the rest of your list, are any of them you know, horror?
