That was a bad night all around. Some dumbass cut into a live water main 30 minutes before I was gonna get off my shift, spent 3 hours cleaning that shit up. I got off like 15 minutes before the screening started and it was an hour and a half away and my clothes were soaked. I'm gonna get a huge new TV when I get the new 4K and treat myself.

I never said it last night but Wolfen was a really great rec. Edward James Olmos is great as the lead and the setting was really comfy. I also went into it expecting a werewolf movie but it was a nice twist that it wasn’t exactly that.

i couldn't imagine wasting money seeing beetlejuice 2 in theaters. do 45 year old couples who leave the kids with grandma enjoy this stuff? it had some funny gags and the aesthetic was true to the original, otherwise it didn't do it for me. bellucci was completely wasted. the song choices weren't nearly as memorable as harry belafonte. catherine ohara was wasted. i'm waiting for the take that this was more modern feminist slop. 5.5/10
>>
>>204311949
they all look terrible
>>
>>204311322
>kek i forgot she was in this
I was disappointed how little they used her. They built her up as the main villain and then she has like 5 minutes of screentime throughout the movie.
Even Beetlejuice wasn't in it much for a movie called Beetlejuice Beetle-- well I'm not gonna type it a third time...

Watched A House on the Bayou (2021)
Felt like a home invader movie with not that much going on other than plotholes & random shit in an attempt to "be interesting". The dad's terribly designed/played, but beyond that nothing really too bad about it. Had some cool moments to make up for the low points

i liked azrael probably more than it deserves. a better director could have done an even better job of execution, but it reminded me of those low grade mumblehorror movies made by the likes of the VHS guys (i know the creative team is tied into that group). my favorite part was briefly giving smith's niece an azrael gauntlet like in the 90s comics. straightforward visceral horror, cool setting, great idea. they didn't know how to milk this idea fully so points deducted for that, and there's no actual character in this mostly on account of the plot device. i can see why some hate it, i thought it was okay.

Return to Sleepaway Camp is pretty shitty but I still enjoy it.
Fun fact, Felissa Rose met her future husband Deron Miller from the band CKY on the set of that movie. The band makes a small cameo as camp counselors. Deron bothered her for years through email, eventually got a small part in the movie and later married his horror waifu. Living the dream.

I just watched Hereditary for the first time, and it had me comparing it to and thinking about Beau is Afraid. For supernatural horror, you need to have a suspension of disbelief. But what if you're not sure you're watching supernatural horror until late into the movie?

For example, in Beau is Afraid, you spend much of the movie thinking of Beau as an unreliable narrator, that you're seeing through his eyes and that what you're seeing on screen isn't actually what's happening but his anxiety-amplified perception of it. But as the movie progresses, you realize that it's a concept piece and that what's "really happening" doesn't matter, what matters is what the movie is trying to say about living with anxiety. The ambiguity of what's reality and what's fantasy actually works in the movie's favor, it keeps you on the edge of your seat as you, like Beau, try to work out an answer that will solve everything. You keep thinking you get it, only to keep going until you self-destruct because no amount of soul-searching will actually fix things. You don't need to take things at face value.

When watching Hereditary, I questioned what I could take at face value. There are implications of mental illness in the family from the grandmother's side, and it makes you wonder if anyone is an unreliable narrator. I spent much of the movie wondering if the supernatural elements were occurring or if it was generational insanity. By the end, it was clear that yes, it was to be taken at face value and it was just a solid modern horror movie that contained supernatural elements. But because I have to suspend my disbelief, it makes me wonder if my preoccupation with doing so was intentional on the movie's part or if it was just extra baggage I was carrying for no reason through most of the film. Would it have been better to go in knowing it was a supernatural movie, or did the initial ambiguity serve to help me accept that it was when it finally became clear because I was invested?

Midwit.
I'll simplify it for your peanut sized little brain so it's easy.
Hereditary is effectively a modern horror masterpiece. That's why it gets so much irrational and often unwarranted hate.
Beau is Afrad, comparatively, is a borderline unwatchable dumpster fire of a movie held up by name / brand recognition and a handful or well executed scenes. It's also very, very, very high on the list of most pretentious movies ever made within the genre. Therefore no one discusses it... because it's just pseud nonsense and people would unironically prefer to discuss things like V/H/S Beyond, despite objectively being of a lower standard of filmmaking, because at least they are honest movies.
Hope that helps you work through your thoughts you blithering idiot.

Also, no one really mentions this - but had it not been for Everything Everywhere All At Once, Beau Is Afraid was inches away from totally tanking A24. Interesting what would have happened if that were the case.

You utterly missed what I was saying because you honed in on the movie names rather than the point I was raising.

Does ambiguity over the legitimacy of what's occurring in a horror movie distract from the enjoyment of that movie? Are you wasting time trying to solve a puzzle that isn't there compared to a horror movie you can take at face value like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre? I'm undecided as to whether or not it hindered or helped my enjoyment of Hereditary, but I feel that it elevated Beau is Afraid because of the specific themes of that movie. The movies themselves are examples that I could quickly contrast, but not the topic of my post.
