Is that you, John Wayne? Is this me?
I just finished watching Carnival of Souls. Overall, I thought it was pretty decent. Pretty predictable though. So basically her soul wanted to remain in the physical world but kept going in between this plane and what comes next, or I guess purgatory as you can call it. It seemed appropriate length wise, I thought that guy trying to hook up with her was pretty entertaining.
We're all John Wayne here.
I really wanna know what John Wayne was like off-screen. Oh look, there's a May 1971 Playboy magazine next to me! And it has a John Wayne interview? Oh boy, how convenient! Let's open up the magazine and see what he has to say.
>>204895140I really wanna know if John Wayne was partial to anal. I bet he committed multiple egregious anal atrocities.

First Ozu I see that immediately and totally clicked with me beginning to end. Can completely see why they consider him transcendental now.
>>204895296>There were occasional rumors about his sexual preferences,[81] and in her 2004 autobiography 'Tis Herself, Maureen O'Hara recalled seeing Ford kissing a famous male actor (whom she did not name) in his office at Columbia Studios.Ford-sama, I...

>>204894444watch Oasis, unnie, it is the best film on this list by a country mile.
We're all committing multiple egregious anal atrocities here.
>>204895385Any 'fans' of Ozu who tell you to start with Tokyo Story are frauds. If you are getting into Ozu you should start as early as possible and go in order, or at the very least start with Late Spring.>>204895426I personally think (at least in the last decade or so) the reason is because newer audiences first hear about this film when learning about Ozu and they hear from word of mouth it is his masterpiece and is highly regarded in elite circles. So they watch it as their first Ozu, and I'm sure people like it well enough but 1. it probably remains only one of two or three Ozu films they ever see. And 2. because of the reputation it has they probably just follow the consensus and parrot this as his best film on forums and discussions. Furthermore, the critics of old who voted this film as one of the greatest of all time only had access to so many Ozu films, so they might have missed out on large chunks of his filmography. Distribution and accessibility during older decades was certainly an issue. I honestly think Early Summer or Tokyo Twilight would have the same reputation as Tokyo Story has if those films were just as evenly distributed as Tokyo Story was back in the day.
John Ford
I'm looking for a film recommendation where an egregious anal atrocities goes down.
>>204895721Bad Boy Bubby
reminder that the Cahiers guys loved to overpraise Hollywoodworkman like Ford because they were watching with subtitles on and cannot decipher the poor acting skills or bland formalism because niggas were too busy reading. What exactly did Ford do as a director that impresses you. If you see his films it is clear to make a John Ford film all you need is a good DoP and the American Southwest, oh and a few cowboys I guess. Boom you're done.
For the anon who liked The Conformist in the last thread, check out American Gigolo and Cat People. They arent masterpieces, but the same guy did the production design so they have a similar visual style.
>>204895877John Ford is my favorite
>>204895877In general, you're not wrong. However, The Searchers is a masterpiece, the peak of Hollywood formalism and its swansong.

>>204895653I read an old critic that said Ozu peaked with his 30s silent films and that his post-war movies that are acclaimed in the west are just stagnation and fossilization for him. I wonder if there's any truth to it
>>204896040American Gigolo
>>204896134Thanks
>>204896058>>204896058>wonder if there's any truth to itNo.Ozu had three eras: early silent years (pre war), middle period (early sound films - Late Spring), then late period Ozu (cyclical saga -- Late Spring - death).Late Spring was a game changer and the cyclical series, which pretty much covers the rest of his films (including Good Morning and Floating Weeds), as these are all the films that are marked by his signature visual and rhythmic style, by rhythmic I mean the cutting specifically.Early Summer is Ozu's masterpiece and one of the greatest films of all time — the dark horse underseen masterpiece. In regards to every movie being the same, or having the same plot about marriage. There are tons of other stuff going on in as well, but just on the surface you see the same plot. The themes tend to change but this is how people get filtered. They watch the films and think its all about marriage, they can't look past the plot and read the subtext. It's like okay but what does the marriage represent in the larger scheme of things, in Ozu its both union and disintegration, union of someone starting the next cycle of life, but disintegration because they will now be separated from their family to start a new life. The paradox of it is what Ozu seemed most interested in thematically. But there are also reflections and continuations of things. For example, Late Spring ends with a shot of the ocean while the next film in the Noriko trilogy Early Summer opens with a shot of the ocean. There are plenty of thematic and narrative expansions but you need to look at Ozu as a whole to really understand how.
>>204896058>>204896220Setsuko Hara’s smiling is part of her personality and there is dual meaning. It’s representation a thing by its opposite. In Late Spring her smile is a defense mechanism, it usually means the opposite of how she is feeling. In Early Summer it is because she represents Buddhist ideals of zen, the turbulence of the world or family such as the war or her brother's death has not broken her spirit. It isn't until the very end of Early Summer where we see her break for the first time, and it is quite compelling because we have seen her personality in the rest of the film.
>>204895653>that imageThat's not an Ozu film though...

>>204896994You are not wrong. My top 3 might be1. Early Summer2. Good Morning3. Floating WeedsGood Morning is almost tied as my personal favorite. It contains my favorite Ozu edit in his whole career (match cutting from the drunken old man to the child). Good Morning also is the most aesthetically beautiful, vibrant colors, and general feel good film unlike his others.

>>204897078>thanks for the tip anon-kunyou are welcome. I like to help people with Ozu films because the western discourse around him is piss poor bad.
what the fuck was his problem?
>>204896994I enjoyed Equinox Flower a whole lot. Will have to go back to Good Morning now, I thought it was cutesy but kinda pointless the first time I saw it . Kinda like Wes Anderson
>>204897147Some people's niche is to be a scumbag and there is nothing you can do about it, it's predestined
>>204897158Understandable.Both Equinox Flower and Early Spring feel the most disconnected out of the whole of Ozu's cyclical saga (even more so than Good Morning and Floating Weeds which do not name themselves after the seasons). And while I like both, and of course both are great film in themselves, I do rank them weakest in the cyclical saga. I don't mind Wes Anderson, but it is a great disservice to compare the two.
>>204897158Also, when you rewatch Good Morning, pay most attention to the way Ozu edits. All his films have meaning that is generated by editing, basic montage theory sort of stuff. It is lighthearted to a certain degree, but do not confuse lightheartedness for being cutesy or whimsical. There is a great deal of melancholy behind the surface. Aside from repeating musical motifs between films, Ozu likes to use happy music the mask the sadness of his characters (this is most apparent in An Autumn Afternoon), but if you keep up with the story beneath the surface of Good Morning, you can see it too.
>>204897265I meant look wise more than the story. Things like soft pastel colors and all the identical houses in neat little rows, plus placement of objects in indoor scenes
We're all scumbags here.
>Hyperdynamic Ozu
>>204897684I see what you're saying. But again it is all superficial because the rest of Anderson's formal style is exactly what it is supposed to mean, unlike Ozu who utilizes filmic polyrhythms and associative editing techniques, which I have not seen from Wes.

Vaguely related, is there anymore japanese films similar to this one? Little dialogue, slow pace, traditional Japanese aesthetics (zen or shinto?), small intimate family life, no major or heavy conflicts etc. Late Spring scratched that itch perfectly and I've seen a couple Chinese films very close to it, but I'm wondering if there's more from Japan. Preferably but not necessarily from their 40s to 60s golden age of cinema

>>204893076Why bother with 'editions' for these threads? It's not like there's any discussion of it (no, "best Guido director" does not count as discussion). What would constitute discussion? Your favorite Capra film and why?Your least favorite Capra film and why?Best Capra collaborators in front of the camera? Best Capra collaborators behind the camera? My answers: Can't pick a single favorite, it's a three-way tie among It Happened One Night, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, and It's a Wonderful Life. Three very different films that are 'best of' examples of their genres. Least favorite is Here Comes the Groom, though that might be because I generally can't stand Bing Crosby as an actor. Best collaborators in front of the camera are Jimmy Stewart and Barbara Stanwyck, hands down. Stewart's an obvious choice but if you haven't seen Capra's early films with Stanwyck, check them out. She's amazing. Best collaborators behind the camera would be Jo Swerling and Robert Riskin (writers) and Joseph Walker (cinematography). Capra's not known as a visual director or for having a distinctive visual style but Walker's cinematography is quite interesting. Notice how many times over his career there were rain scenes and the use of glass (or the waterfall shot in Platinum Blonde). Token recommendation that's actually not token at all: See his WWII docs. Great stuff, especially given they were shot during the war.

>Fascination>4/10Polarized film; on the one hand, it looks like an arthouse movie, on the other hand, the plot aspects of it absolutely suck. Atmosphere and aesthetics are pretty much the only reason to see this. The first half is laughable, then it picks up some speed in the second half. It could be said that the first half is a different movie when compared to the second half. Interested on /film/'s thoughts about this flick.

>>204912482so no more films?
We're all coalburners here.
>>204915337>>204915119The Asians in the film (mostly Kazakhs) are all pretty badass and the white Russians are mostly getting BTFO'd or being druggies. Kino btw, just like Tsoi's band.
We're all Amwf hapas here.
>>204915484only sexdawg is
>>204915514.... how did you know?
>>204895385you're exactly right, still my favourite - so poetic. i don't think i've cried as much at a final scene as i did in this
>>2049040304chan's new anti-spam measures. /f/ is the only board that's immune to this
>>204914028But the main oriental grift poster is Taiwanese.
We're all immune to this here.
>>204917200I'm no longer immune to anything
>>204917338AIDS?
>>204914014There's a bit of that in it sure, because some of it was filmed around the dead Aral Sea that Soviets destroyed. Sokurov's Days of Eclipse has a similar setting and topic too
Do you remember that anon that was ailing with a chronic pain or disease? I hope he's alright now.
This is a definite GOAT contender, such a perfect movie
>>204919167Thank you for engaging. This added context positively serves my reading and your film comparison serves as a recommendation for another interesting watch.
>>204893076Is there a reason you redditors keep making threads on this site? You have an entire website where you midwits can upvote each other. This place is already riddled with your jew bots. Fuck off and feed their AI over there.

We're all little devils here.
>>204919644/film/ loved that guy before he got popular.
>>204919700You mean when /film/ didn't exist?
>>204919700Dogtooth was pretty good.
>>204919340No problem. The main theme of it is youth rebellion, youth culture, underground rock music (the main guy was basically the Russian Kurt Cobain) which was finally kind of allowed under Gorbachev's perestroika. Assa is another similar movie from that era starring popular musicians, I think it's on the Mosfilm channel on youtube
We all have a little bit of poo in our vaginas here. We all wipe back to front here.
>>204919644Seh, eh... The Lobster is pretty good. It's incel kino.
>>204919867This film seemed to me to be a product of its time, for its time. What I'm trying to say is that I found it underwhelming, and this disconnect might be because I was never a youth in late 80s Russia. Oh well.
>>204919796It's just a Castillo de la Pureza rip off.
>>204921196Could also just be because the director was an old guy who wasn't personally involved in the underground rock scene at all. So it wasn't going to be as authentic as The Needle
Alright /film/, give me some cozy mystery thrillers for late night watching.

>>204921995Hell no, didn't know Carlos Hugo Christensen had directed that one. By the way, you should check Journey to Duilia's Breast by him, absolute kino.
>>204922078I will, thanks for the rec!
>>204919217I'm still here. Still fucked, but I think I have everything I need. Pain is constant, but I don't have to make much effort to live anymore, just focusing on the day to day things for the most part.
