The Innkeepers (2011) – An Excellent modern classic from Ti West, who’s at his best when he’s doing slow, atmospheric work and leaving the slasher genre alone. A ghost story, I believe, should have COMFY beginnings, and The Innkeepers succeeds at that and more. We have two young people staffing the Yankee Pedlar (actual spelling), a venerable old building with the ghost of Madeline O’Malley to its supposed credit; the hotel is failing and it’s the last weekend it will remain open -- and also the last weekend our two heroes will be employed. They have no other prospects lined up; they’re not in college, or planning to go. There’s nothing pressing on them, unless you include their shared interest in amateur ghost-hunting. How much more *comfy* can you get? Imagine you’re working in a nice, old haunted building, with very few guests; there’s no big demands decorum can even MAKE on you, since you’re soon out of work anyway. You can drink. You can record EVPs. You can play computer games all night.

They are important, and each carries a weighty PSYCHIC LOAD that will charge the atmosphere of the Inn and influence future events . . .

I abhor JLC's real life persona but watching her aged looks on the mediocre DDG Halloween trilogy has a wistfulness to it. Likewise Danielle Harris in Stream but Harris has surprisingly maintained a milf freshness to her (something that the movie briefly alludes to btw)

What I respected the most of the Blumhouse trilogy was how unhinged this version of Laurie was. She was definitely struggling from massive PTSD after that horrific night. I mean look at it from her POV: She found her 2 best friends brutally murdered (along with the boyfriend of the blonde friend). I think you're working on an assumption that a film has to be made by a woman for someone to see feminist elements in it, which just isn't the case. Again, my point has never been that these films (especially the early ones) were designed from a standpoint of feminism or considered feminist practices in their development or anything like that (although, also, I don't think that something being made by a man precludes it from being intentionally feminist), but rather that they were enjoyed with a feminist perspectice because of the frequency of women on starring roles--and very often NOT as eye candy--I think I would have a hard time seeing Shelly Duval in The Shining in that way, as pretty as she is--though there are certainly plenty where they are, and that in turn was reflected in later horror that was made intentionally feminist.

I think there's also some issue here with seeing the director as the sole creator. For one thing, if you start looking at writers you'll notice womens names starting to pop up more, and for another, there simply haven't been nearly as many women directors to start with. Whether that's because they're not interested or because they're being kept from it (personally I think its a bit of both), for there to be horror movies directed by women, you'd have to have movies directed by women.

They were given a lot of leeway by Blum, who's said that his usual deal with directors is: modest budgets but complete creative freedom.
As for Laurie, yes, there's initially a paranoid air to the character that does make sense but I don't think JLC pulled it off adequately, I found it occasionally shrill and despite being understandable there was a lack of connection with the audience. But it is a worthwhile arc to follow and add to the several aspects of the entire saga and its spinoffs/versions etc

Finding aspects of something you identify with in a work that was not intended for you is extremely common. Its why a catholic can use the image of Jeanne d'Arc to represent their religion because she's a saint who died praising god, a nationlist can use her to represent wanting to remove foreginers from his homeland, a lesbian can use her because she wore men's clothing and a Frenchman can use her to represent his country. The Frenchman and the Catholic may be esppusing values she actually had but the other two are taking one aspect and running with it, and from that came variations on her story that supported those aspects more strongly.

This is what happened with horror films. Feminists saw aspects of their values in these films, which so often star women, feature them surviving where men don't, have powerful women and women who get their revenge on men, and in turn spun that around into more feminist horror films that we see in the past decade or so.

You got Rhodes all wrong. In fact he didn't abuse his power when he should have. He gave the scientists so much leeway to continue their work that everyone got fucked in the process, and then he started going into panic mode to keep the rest of his men alive.
The movie starts after 5 soldiers are already dead, including their previous commanding officer who the scientists still hated but felt was easier than Rhodes. Rhodes learned from Major Cooper's mistake and got more strict in the hopes that there'd be less fucking around and unnecessary deaths.

It's a strange case. First of all, production-wise, here's what happened: a script was written but later Peele "helped" the writer/director out, hence (I assume) the bizarre tonal shift and male character change in the last scene which tries to heavyhandedly suggest that he was the barbarian for trying to betray the woman character
Other than that the movie's feminism-- if any-- backfires since the main character is staggeringly stupid even for horror movie character standards. The inclusion of the benevolent black hobo also seemed forced and detracted from the overall product.
