Why isn't the The Shield mentioned with all time great shows like The Wire, Sopranos or Breaking Bad? I think it belongs there.
I just finished rewatching it and it was great. It was airing in the same years as Sopranos and The Wire but it didn't develop such cult fanbase, why is that?

The Shield was the first "prestige" TV I ever watched, unless you count OZ. After watching Breaking Bad and The Wire I put it to the wayside. But in retrospect I think it might actually be better than both those shows. Certainly more entertaining. I had more fun watching Vic Mackey than I did Walter White.
>>
>>205042280
The characters and the writing were supreme. The way it was shot was also great. It was made by real people with an understanding of how to expertly craft drama and suspense, all anchored by multi-dimensional characters who were given immense development. It's the greatest TV program that's ever been aired. It's a blessing that it never became big because what is precious, is only known to a handful. I'm glad it's not a big show and most don't know about it. Makes it even better.

Was his other show The Commish any good?

idk, I was gonna say "it's unironically too good" but The Wire gets threads here and there. I started watching the shield because of a couple of meme/funny scenes but the show is legitimately really good. Absolutely fantastic characters, great story progression for the main cast, and an actual just solid, good fucking ending for once.
>>
>>205042376
The only thing that's a bit of a stain is Kurt Sutter saying that truck driver in SoA was Vic Mackey. Of course, it's just him saying it but he shouldn't have.

It's pretty good but I hate how side characters kind of just get hung out to dry, especially Dutch since he was the most fun/interesting side character that had almost nothing to do with the strike team. A lot of the side characters felt like they had an arc building up but it either got cut short it went nowhere which really makes them feel pointless in the end, like the spic trainee girl

>It was made by real people with an understanding of how to expertly craft drama and suspense
that's only partially true, it was an accident. shawn ryan is a boring shitter who is only capable of pumping out boring procedurals and the other major writer was kurt sutter who is a brilliant but insane retard who constantly inserts his fetishes into his shows. it was shawn tard wrangling kurt's radical fantasies into a police procedural that just happened to capture lightning in a bottle. it is the best cop show ever made and one of the all time best for any genre if you have any taste, but it could just as easily been a forgettable corny mess like the unit or sons of anarchy.
kurt sutter was the lead writer on THE episode

The best art is always made when a bunch of people filter each other out and in at appropriate amounts. I wouldn't call what Ryan did afterwards but but certainly less engaging and daring. I liked his new Netflix show. It was fun with no politically diseased bullshit. Kurt is a strange person, needless to say. He made a medieval show no one watched and now went back to milking sons of anarchy for all it's worth. fall from grace, suffice to say. Same thing with the Sopranos and any other great show. Too many cooks in the kitchen is bad but one is just as bad. You need the right handful. A writer's room back in 2002 when the shield was conceived must have been fun to be apart of.

>Acevada gets raped
>Finally confides in his wife
>She's disgusted
>Treats him like he's a gay degenerate
>Is maybe a heartbeat away from divorcing him
>All because he was raped against his will

Other shows would have the wife be caring and concerned and loving and supportive, and she'd take them to therapy and it would all work out.

The Shield was the only show I've ever seen that did this and it did it so incredibly well. Never writing stories to preach something to the audience, just showing very believable and flawed characters that felt human going through their struggles, whether because of their identity or beliefs, and never having all the right answers. Characters like Claudette would be a mess to watch in a usual story but in The Shield she is done extremely well.

Easily the best pilot episode ever, the fact they not only had that build up and twist to establish Mackey as the protagonist, but also concurrently had the kidnapper subplot going on at the same time to establish every other character at the farm. Shit was done to absolute perfection, the events of the pilot had weight that was felt in every subsequent episode.

hmmm wut

The point of the "side characters" was to show that regardless of what happens with/to the strike team the hood and cops never really change, I'm not even really sure how you could miss this especially since you point out the spic whose entire arc almost perfectly parallels the arc of Julian who we see from season one, but starting later in the series. It's practically the same premise as the overarching themes in the Wire except less hamfisted.

The funnier part is that "gay blowjob" follows him for the rest of the series, like literally until the last episode with Vic finally seeing the picture.
I do not know what writers had against the character but the entire trajectory of his plot line just did 180 after that. Actual humiliation ritual.

The Shield is why HBO no longer holds a monopoly on prestige TV and it's finale is widely proclaimed to be superior to the Wire's finale even by Wire stans in the press.

That said, it's also largely protected from normies cancer ala Venture Brothers, meaning it's fanbase isn't full of idiots and the characters and plotlines are largely anti-pc so the women crowd hasn't corrupted it.

It's got its moments but suffers from the fact that it's largely stand alone episodes with a few arcs, one really nasty character death that completely upends the series, and that it goes out of its way to basically write Chiklis's character as a Mart Stu beloved father figure type that resulted in Chiklis being stuck playing dad roles until The Shield came along and allowed him the chance to show the world he could play other roles.

Should note that most of the really disturbing shit on the shield came not from Sutter but from Ryan's obsession with Rotten, a hire website that had a section for fucked up crimes and the murders/suicide of Chris Benoit and his family.

Ryan is a down low sick fuck...

And also, Ryan has said that The Shield was also creatively, a response to dealing with Don Johnson's egomania while writing for Nash Bridges. Ryan stated numerous times on the DVD commentary tracks, that Johnson would veto any storyline that made his character look flawed or wrong in any way. Hence why Shield was full of fucked up cops who did bad if not morally questionable things

Julian's conversion therapy storyline was forced on the writers by the actor, who was on a short term contract and wouldn't re-up his contract past season one unless Julian managed to pray the gay away.

Ryan knew the storyline sucked but Michael Jace wouldn't budge on keeping Julian straight, so he was stuck with it outside of the occasion c-plot where they explicitly show that he was utterly miserable and impotent with his wife. He planned on having Ronnie come out as gay to try and counter balance Jace's crap but it got abandoned when season seven has to be rewriten from scratch due to behind the scenes chaos.

Anyone I know who watches it after Wire/Sopranos/BrBa says its just as good and can run with those shows. It couldn't be made today though, its way too brutal and honest.
>>
>>205052342
It aired concurrently with the wire. They were both responses to law and order. The problem is David Simon had already made a network television version of the shield, homicide. So the shield was just “homicide: loud and fast.”
>>
>>205045629
I liked Acevada's redemption arc and got pissed when the picture came back during the last season. Like the other anon said though, he was a shitty person playing a shitty political game and got humbled, had he been smarter, less ambitious or more patient he would never have been in that situation, but he decided to go after Vic and (like everyone else who tries to) payed a horrible price. All things considered he got off pretty easy in the end.

People aren't ready to accept Kurt Sutter is a genius. The Shield and Sons of Anarchy are two of the greatest shows ever made.
>>
Reminder: the show is based off the failed rampart police district. The corrupt cops Vick Mackey and crew were based on were all black.

So remember, every time you see the little bald guy, that’s a nigger with a thin coat of high gloss white paint.
>>
>I brought you some food
>>
>>205042020
The production quality wasn't anywhere near the HBO level.

Cheap budget, cheap sets, you could tell a lot of the show was made on a shoestring budget.
Basically, The Shield's presentation is what brings it down.
>>
>>205053219
No one is ever going to accept him as a genius because all he ever writes are very turbulent puddles. His fans would be just as happy with “jingling keychains: the show.”

I think it ads to the show feeling like it's a cop show more than anything. I know body cams weren't widely spread anywhere in the timeline of the show, but it really feels like someone is just filming an episode of Cops. All those obstructed shots, zooms, and quick panning.
It's especially apparent when someone is being arrested when the preferred choice is over-the-shoulder pov, like it's a TV crew with the cops.

You know the cops cameramen were fighting to make everything seem more dramatic than it was, right? So in this fake drama, you’re praising attempts to add more fake drama. This is ultimately what puts people off the show. It’s trying way too hard and it’s pretty obvious it’s trying so hard to cover the fact it has no depth.

I hadn't watched this film in forever. I did so a week ago. I was astonished by how much I related to Travis. Last time I watched it in full was when I was too young to get it. As a man in the middle of his 20's, the things Travis feels and experiences unsettled me in how much they are alike to my experiences. Even down to how he mishandles social situations and feels malaise. I tried university, went for an art degree because my young self thought that the arts were a good way to differientate myself from my family and friends. Big mistake. I ended up with wasted time and money. Anyway, I might give The Shield a chance. After Sons of Anarchy ended, I've never watched a show from beginning to end.

Claudette as a character would be absolutely hated on /tv/ today but she is so well written. She basically doesn't change at all throughout the show, remaining self-righteous and sitting on the moral high ground for the entire duration of the show, but she is still incredible to watch. The ending she gets is just as crushing and depressing as Vic.
>>
>>205054641
I'm talking about handheld movement and blocking choices where they would specifically film like it's a TV crew with the characters, not fucking how fake Cops was.
Take your dick out of the microwave or do I have to explain that Shield is a written drama for FOX?
>>
>>205056072
Pretty damn close. I had the same interaction he had with the movie theater cashier girl. I really told myself to try to talk to a woman like that but it went horribly. She even called out to someone just like what happened to Travis. I work in a metal factory and there's these two old gentlemen and one of 'em talks exactly like that cabbie in the movie. He says stuff about how your work becomes your life and how life is good when you focus on simple pleasures like football, food and other stuff.
>>
>>205042020
The show has a low-class, thuggish air to it that makes typical prestige television snobs turn their nose up at it. The pilot has the Strike Team shoot a guy while Kid Rock plays in the background. It's hard to wax poetic in The Atlantic about a show like The Shield.
>>
>>205057068
This is the only post that gets it. It was too real and authentic and had no pretentious posturing about it which made the big boys kneecap it at awards shows. Masses only watch shows that are socially beneficial to follow or did before streaming.

>>
>>205042562
With the way things ramped up in the last two seasons, a lot of the side characters were necessarily pushed into the background, but they still felt like real people living and working in that world. Forcing a big conclusive arc on Dutch or Tina coveniently timed right at the end would have felt phony.
>>
>>205056563
… yes, I completely understood that you’re talking about how they tried to imitate how cops cameramen generated fake drama in a fake drama. Not sure how you didn’t understand that, outside of simple iq disparity.
>>
>>205057120
Yes kid rock always blasts when police are in firefights that’s realism.

>>
>>205064274
Cops were not manufacturing fake drama by using handhelds and running from preps. They were manufacturing it by telling niggers to act crazy on camera, what the fuck is the correlation here when operator isn't a character in Shield? Did you seriously interpret me saying that use over-the-shoulder filming as me pretending the camera is a character?
In no way does the Shields camera style highlight or distract from the writing, it's not an active participant but a style, it's not too dissimilar to Succession. They have as many conventional shots as shaky handheld.
Seriously, your dick is boiling in that microwave. Now, it's a fucking stratagem to "distract" with a handheld of all things. It's not that dynamic to begin with, what are you even pretending is jingling here. At this point, you're just trying to have the last word by saying nonsense.

I binged this and enjoyed it, but it's pretty clear why it isn't talked about as much as shit like the wire and breaking bad and the sopranos. Because its fucking obnoxious. They never actually do cop shit. Ever. Its JUST a gang. Thats it. Thats all it is. Even the actual gangs in The Wire are easier to empathize with. And less psychopathic. And less villainous.

Think of it less as a cop show and more as a dramatization of the CRASH unit, one of the most corrupt police units in police history.
>>
>>205070433
Perfect. And it was always unnecessary too. Just... deploy the police and stop ignoring shit in the ghettos. No extra powers needed.

>>205069739
>no petty busts
Lol no. Arresting and jailing every gang member and lowlife criminal you can as fast as you can engages in a war of attrition that, if properly done. Gangs simply can't survive. And ideally, you provoke as many shootouts as possible. Take fewer prisoners, leave more bodies.
>>
>>205070961
>Just... deploy the police and stop ignoring shit in the ghettos.
Blame politicians. In fact, it's a plot point in Shield that the governor is purposely not deploying enough police units to the neighborhood in order to drive real estate prices down. Then later on, the unit is hamstrung because the politicians think it's bad optics to have a white unit swooping in and saving the black and latino ghettos. The Shield is a pretty good depiction of what the good (white) people on the ground have to put up with when they try to 'stop ignoring shit in the ghettos.'

Agreed, people are smoking some heavy doobies if they think it's better than the likes of The Wire and The Sopranos, but The Shield is most certainly in my top 5 shows. In my opinion where it loses some points is the fact that it is somewhat stretched as a serialised cop show, rather than the tighter, more concentrated primetime drama structure of the aforementioned shows.
